Coronavirus ruined my chance to say goodbye properly- devasted

I'm not sure why I'm posted but I just need to say that I'm devasted. My older lady dog Maisie (13) collapsed several times on Friday and I took her to the vet. Because of CV19 the vet would only speak to me in the street and took maisie in for a check over. As I feared, her heart medication was no longer working and her organs were shutting down. The vet brought her own a I cuddled her and then signed the papers. He took her back inside but due to restrictions I couldn't be with her while sh was pts and so my last memory is of her looking back at me as I stood outside, helpless to do anything.

I'm getting flashbacks of it and can't stop crying. She was an amazing dog and overcome so much in her short life :-(

I am so very sorry OP. That must be incredibly hard.
She has had a lifetime of love and care from you, and only those few minutes without you there, so please try and remember that now.

Iggypoppie · 29/03/2020 20:14

Thanks Vix. This is much harder than j was expecting, I thought I was prepared.

That’s so sad, how traumatic for you. 😔. I hope you get some comfort that she’s no longer in pain or suffering.

Ireallymustgotobed · 29/03/2020 20:20

I am so sorry you couldn’t have the goodbye you wanted. It is hard enough without that. FlowersI am sure your lovely dog knew how much you cared about her. You really did have no other choice and did the best you could for her. The vet staff will have felt for you both too and given her lots of comfort at the end.

FeelLykShitJustWantMacciesBack · 29/03/2020 20:21

Oh OP I am devastated for you. Just remember you have given her a whole lifetime of love and happiness, and a few minutes does not override that. She knows.Flowers I promise. Xxxx

heatseeker14 · 29/03/2020 20:22

Aww bless you, that’s so very sad. 😔 Try to think about the good times you shared. RIP Maisie. 🐾

Mummyshark2018 · 29/03/2020 20:23

I'm so sorry. That sounds horrendous. She was a very gorgeous girl. X

TheoriginalLEM · 29/03/2020 20:24

I am so very sorry - as a student veterinary nurse this has been my biggest dread.

What I can tell you is Maisie will have had cuddles and kisses and would not have died alone. If ever owners cannot be there a nurse will be on standby for their last goodbye and will reassure and talk to them while they quietly drift off. I tell them they are loved.

I am so sorry for your loss xx

cakeandchampagne · 29/03/2020 20:25

And the last time she saw you, you cuddled her, and handed her to someone you knew you could trust to be kind and gentle.
Sorry for your loss. Flowers

TitianaTitsling · 29/03/2020 20:25

Oh I am so so sorry for your loss, as above she will absolutely have known she was loved. Sending you heartfelt condolences.

JaneEyre7 · 29/03/2020 20:26

It's OK to be so sad - I truly felt heartbroken when we lost our lab. Her ashes are in the sunny window in the kitchen that she loved to lie underneath - I can't bear to bury them.

Your girl was a real beauty and I'm so sorry you've lost her Flowers

Iggypoppie · 29/03/2020 20:26

Thanks all. It's just another example of how this rotten disease is affecting all aspects of life. So far I'd felt relatively unscathed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Maisie was beautiful and loved, the vet would have comforted her at the end.

My cat will need PTS soon, we had already talked about arrangments before CV, obviously now it can't happen at home but they are still allowing one owner inside the practice for euthanasia.

Fishcakey · 29/03/2020 20:31

I don't know what to say. Massive hugs xxxxc

tabulahrasa · 29/03/2020 20:32

Bear in mind... they don’t usually need comforting, they don’t know what’s happening - most of my pets have just fallen asleep being fed biscuits when the sedation kicked in...

It’s us that get upset... not them.

penisbeakers · 29/03/2020 20:33

I'm genuinely so sorry. This pretty much broke me today, but it will be nothing compared to how you feel. I promise you that the vet and nurses will have given her the kindest and gentlest journey. Please be kind to yourself. ❤️❤️❤️

Terralee · 29/03/2020 20:36

RIP to your beautiful dog, thinking of you xxx

Iggypoppie · 29/03/2020 20:40

I'm sorry to be spreading sadness at this awful time for everyone. The vet seemed very kind and concerned. I feel like phoning tomorrow to get some closure. I don't know. Thanks all xxx

I’m sure the vet or vet nurse would be happy to have a chat with you and help you get some closure. I know they would at our surgery. Remember it is a very real grieving process and it is ok to handle it how you need to.

maddiemookins16mum · 29/03/2020 20:49

What a lucky girl Maisie was to have you. I do think it would help you to speak with the vet 💐💐

purpleme12 · 29/03/2020 20:53

Oh I'm so so sorry I feel so bad for you
Please know that I'm thinking of you
She will know that she was loved through all her life
Please do what you need to do and let yourself grieve xx

TrainspottingWelsh · 29/03/2020 21:00

I'm so sorry. I'm not trying to minimise how much more it must hurt in those circumstances, but Maisie wouldn't have known, so don't feel guilty on her behalf.

Rationalcat · 30/03/2020 03:55

This happened to me today.
Had no warning I wasn't allowed in.
Truly awful set of circumstances.
My heart goes out to you.
I know how my dog felt, just from how he looked at me.

Im broken. I understand your pain. .
Virtual hugs.
