Coronavirus ruined my chance to say goodbye properly- devasted

I'm not sure why I'm posted but I just need to say that I'm devasted. My older lady dog Maisie (13) collapsed several times on Friday and I took her to the vet. Because of CV19 the vet would only speak to me in the street and took maisie in for a check over. As I feared, her heart medication was no longer working and her organs were shutting down. The vet brought her own a I cuddled her and then signed the papers. He took her back inside but due to restrictions I couldn't be with her while sh was pts and so my last memory is of her looking back at me as I stood outside, helpless to do anything.

I'm getting flashbacks of it and can't stop crying. She was an amazing dog and overcome so much in her short life :-(

So sorry to hear this. Maisie would not have known what was happening, and she would have had kind words from the vet. She was a beautiful dog. Just concentrate on the fact that she had a good life, and you did the right thing at the end. Flowers Hugs

@Iggypoppie Its shit isnt it. I am still devastated. Ruby will come back in a scatter box and when all this is over we are taking her and her brother who we lost in September to their favourite beach in the Highlands. Take care xx

We lost our lovely girl yesterday very suddenly and also didn’t get to say goodbye.

She was fine on Monday but yesterday morning while DH was getting breakfast for her and our other dog she disappeared. Would normally be barking at us to hurry up. He found her lying behind the shed. She got up and walked back down to the house but her legs were weak and she obv wasn’t well.

Got an appointment at the vet and we took her down. Vet came out to car. She got up and seemed a little better. Vet took her in to check her over and came back and said they suspected internal bleeding probably from growths in the spleen. He said they would X-ray and do an ultrasound. He took her in and her tail was wagging away as normal. We left.

He called to say she had a large mass around her spleen and he recommend surgery but had to warn us she might not make it as she had lost so much blood.

Then got a call later to say the mass had spread and was bleeding in an area he couldn’t access. So he couldn’t stop the bleeding. We had to let her go. Sad

I’m so sad. So sorry we didn’t get to say goodbye. Didn’t think it would all happen so fast.

The only saving grace is that she didn’t linger in pain. And the vet said her tail was wagging the whole time until they put her under.

We are all devastated.

Oh @Peridot1 - so, so sorry. What a horrible shock. :(

Rassy · 01/04/2020 16:01

@Peridot1 My heart is breaking for you and for everyone else who is grieving at this terrible time.

We were at the vets this am with our 12 year old Border Collie. She has a lot of underlying health issues but has been off her food and horrendous lumps and bumps have appeared these past few days - some are oozing. Samples have been sent urgently to the lab - been told Friday or Saturday for results. Vet has said it doesn't look good and could be cancer. I am heartbroken and keep crying.

I realise that we will have to let her go soon - I just hope they can pts in the car. Today we could not go into the vets and had to hand her over at a distance at the side gate.

This awful Coronavirus is making already terrible situations even more worst.

Topseyt · 01/04/2020 16:11

Peridot1, I am so sorry. What a shock for you, and in these exceptional times it is often not possible to be with the pet either.

It was enough of an ordeal having to have our elderly (15 year old) labrador put to sleep last November after his collapse, and I remain devastated about it. I had actually hoped that he might hang on until spring of this year. I never thought that I would say this, but I must now admit now that I am almost relieved that he went when he did and we were all able to be there with him, hugging him as the vet put him to sleep.

This is a nightmare that is still at the back of my mind though as I still have an elderly cocker spaniel who is almost 15 now.

MintToBee · 01/04/2020 16:15

@Peridot1 So so sorry for you. Sending you much strength and love 💐

devildeepbluesea · 01/04/2020 16:17

I'm so terribly, terribly sorry for you all.

DDog is 18 this year and I am hoping and praying that he will come through this terrible time unscathed. I'm not sure how I'd cope if I couldn't be with him at the end.

Nevertheless, @TheoriginalLEM your post has comforted me a little.

Rationalcat · 02/04/2020 00:28

I keep coming back here. Im so sorry for everyone who is going through this trauma at the worst possible time.
Unfortunately, we got two inexperienced vets who struggled to explain the options and let our dog get stressed and anxious for well over an hour , as there was no communication.

Very hard to deal with, seeing him looking back at us, wondering what the hell was going on.

We had been wondering much the same thing so all on the same page.

Hope those that can, can find some peace and acceptance soon.

I’m so very sorry for the way you had to lose your girl.
We lost our old (14) year old lab in January and we went in with her and, I have to say, it took only a matter of moments (less than a minute) for the injection to work. It’s an awful time and I’m so sorry that you weren’t able to be there but the vets were amazing for us and I do believe they would have been a very good substitute for us not being there. They also got down and gave our girl a hug and a pet. Vets care so very much, they would have absolutely made sure your girl was restful and at peace.
We haven’t had the chance to scatter her ashes but when this is over we will go for a lovely walk and remember her, I hope you can do this too. Flowers

Peridot1 · 02/04/2020 07:39

Thanks for the support. And Flowers to those of you who have been or are going through similar.

House feels very quiet without her even with our other dog here. Other dog is a bit quiet.

The vet called yesterday. He said they were very sad too to lose her. He said she was always lovely to have there as she was always so happy to be there. Both our two loved going to the vet!

He did say that she had loads of adhesions and that this had been there for quite a while and was one of the worst cases he had seen. And even without testing he would be very surprised if it wasn’t malignant.

So I feel a bit comforted that she was her normal happy self right up to the last day.

We use a lovely dog walker and she used to say that Codie was sometimes a bit like Benjamin Button and acted more like a puppy than an elderly lady of 10. She loved her blankets and being chased for them. And her tail was like a big base drum thumping on the floor or against the kitchen units.

Rassy · 02/04/2020 19:39

Been told tonight that our dog does have cancer and has 2 weeks max left but in reality less. We are all beyond devastated

Topseyt · 02/04/2020 19:47

Rassy, so sorry to hear that. We all know what you are going through.

Janus · 02/04/2020 20:15

Oh Rassy I’m so, so sorry. Did the vets give you painkillers for your dog to help?

I really feel for all of you going through this at this time.

Rassy · 02/04/2020 21:31

Thank you - your kindness is much appreciated at this awful time xx

@Janus yes she is on painkillers and vet given her antibiotics as well

Peridot1 · 02/04/2020 22:06

Oh Rassy I am so so sorry. Your poor girl.

jacqelinedaniels · 03/04/2020 15:02

In floods of tears reading all these and sending love to all those suffering. Our girl is almost 12 and has cancer, we think things are escalating quickly now as her pain is often obvious and the painkillers make her sick as well. The thought of not being with her at the end is more than I can stand. I'm scared to ask the vets in case they say they can't do the long lead thing when it's time. It's so horrible. She is completely terrified of the vets, a quivering shaking mess of abject misery every time she's ever been. It's awful.

MintToBee · 04/04/2020 09:14

@jacqelinedaniels My heart breaks for you. Ask your vet if they can give you an oral sedative so when the time comes you could give her that at home. Then it should help with her stress at the vets. Then ask if they can place a catheter and run the somulose through a drip with a long extension so you can be with her.

Rassy · 04/04/2020 09:33

@jacqelinedaniels my heart is breaking for you too. This whole situation is making the decline and loss of a pet even more painful and tragic. Sending you hugs and love and to everyone else.

Our vet has told us that thankfully two of us can be with her at the end as they are making exceptions only for pts pets. Also been advised that the emergency vet is the same. I appreciate we are very lucky that our vet is doing this.

jacqelinedaniels · 05/04/2020 13:13

Thanks for your kind words. We just said goodbye to our girl. Her pain got too much quickly. The emergency vet has different rules and they did it on the grass outside the back. We are glad she is sleeping now and not in pain any more. Just can’t imagine life without her.

Peridot1 · 05/04/2020 13:32

So sad for you @jacqelinedaniels.

Rassy · 05/04/2020 13:51

@jacqelinedaniels Am heartbroken for you but glad you were able to be with your girl at the end. Am thinking of you and sending you big hugs

tsmainsqueeze · 05/04/2020 14:05

i have joined mumsnet to reply to you . i am a vet nurse and i want to reassure you that if the staff at your vets are any where as kind as my team then Maisie would have been totally enveloped with love , tenderness and kindness . in the last 2 weeks we have had to do this a few times without owners present due to virus and our behaviour to beloved pets is no different without them there .my lovely friend was in tears as she held a little sweet dog during her last moments last week whilst her owner waited in his car . i know nurses at lots of different practices all very kind .i wish owners could see and hear the acts of kindness shown every day behind the scenes in a vets . i am so sorry for your loss , this is the final act of kindness we can show our beloved pet and a privilege to be able to do so .

MintToBee · 05/04/2020 15:35

@jacqelinedaniels So sorry for your loss. Sending you love ❤

Rationalcat · 06/04/2020 08:22

@tsmainsqueeze

Im sure that's comforting to know for many.

But they couldn't even get my dog's name right.

Sorry, still angry and upset. .
