Coronavirus ruined my chance to say goodbye properly- devasted

I'm not sure why I'm posted but I just need to say that I'm devasted. My older lady dog Maisie (13) collapsed several times on Friday and I took her to the vet. Because of CV19 the vet would only speak to me in the street and took maisie in for a check over. As I feared, her heart medication was no longer working and her organs were shutting down. The vet brought her own a I cuddled her and then signed the papers. He took her back inside but due to restrictions I couldn't be with her while sh was pts and so my last memory is of her looking back at me as I stood outside, helpless to do anything.

I'm getting flashbacks of it and can't stop crying. She was an amazing dog and overcome so much in her short life :-(

Your Maisie looks like a cheeky little bundle of fun-how you must miss your darling girl.

If it is any consolation she will know how much you adored her.

My heart goes out to you Flowers

I read this last night with tears in my eyes. Now it's my turn. Waiting for the vets to call me back with a time to go there.

GCAcademic · 30/03/2020 12:01

So sorry to all of you that have faced this. It’s likely to be the same for us too. Our dog is terminally ill and likely to die within the lockdown period. I was devastated anyway, even more so when I looked at the vets website and realised we wouldn’t be able to be with him. He is utterly terrified of the vet, and the idea of handing him over to someone he’s so scared of and us not being with him is more than I can bear.

MintToBee · 30/03/2020 13:12

We have just got back. They placed a long line in and did it in the back of the car so we could be with her.
It hurts though.

spiderlight · 30/03/2020 14:00

I am so very sorry. My heart goes out to you, it truly does. Try to focus on the 13 years of love and care you gave your beautiful girl. Flowers

Iggypoppie · 30/03/2020 14:02

@MintToBee so sorry for your loss. Emotions are already running high and this just adds to it doesn't it. X

@GCAcademic there is a service called Cloud9 vets that come to your home, depending on area. If I'd had more time to consider then I might have used them. X

I'm so so sorry OP. She looks such a beautiful girl. I'm sure she was comforted and cuddled by the staff as @TheoriginalLEM says. She won't have known what you knew was happening. Be kind to yourself, it is such a loss.

Rationalcat · 31/03/2020 02:27

Its crap, isn't it?
A difficult decision made excruciatingly worse.
Im so sorry for all of you.
FlowersGin....whatever it takes to soldier on after the loss.
Ive hit the 🥃

Thepigeonsarecoming · 31/03/2020 02:34

I’m so sorry for all that’s going through this, I’ve sat by my previous old boys side and said goodbye before this, all I can offer is that there’s no suffering. Yes it’s horrible you couldn’t be there but I’m sure the vet/nurse present would have done everything they could in your place. It must be heartbreaking for them too

I hope you can speak to them and get some closure, my heart goes out to you 💔

Topseyt · 31/03/2020 03:06

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this. What a lovely girl she was. I am sure she knew how much she was loved.

We are in such a crap situation right now. It would make a difficult situation like yours a million times worse.

I lost my elderly labrador last November. It is still very painful and I am only now really starting to accept it. Reading your post though, I am actually relieved that it happened then and not now. Not being able to be with him would have been horrendous.

Take care of yourself now too.

Iggypoppie · 31/03/2020 18:00

Hi all,

Just to say thank you for your kind thoughts. I spoke to the lovely vet who was with her at the end and it only took a few seconds. He said that I shouldn't feel bad about not being there. Speaking to him has given me some closure I feel, and I've decided to get her ashes in a casket. Just trying to take it day by day. Take care everyone x

Op this has just brought tears to my eyes, as did the photo of your lovely dog. It sounds like you had a wonderful relationship, and I'm sure you provided a lifetime of love and happiness. I'm so glad the vet has been able to offer you some peace and reassurance 🌈

Rationalcat · 31/03/2020 22:59

@Iggypoppie - good to hear your update.

Sending hugs.

fivedogstofeed · 01/04/2020 07:08

This is so desperately sad. So sorry op, and everyone else who has lost their lovely dogs.

joystir59 · 01/04/2020 07:12

So sorry for your loss OP. You stood by Maisie and did the very best you could for her, and she is at peace now.

alwaysneedgin · 01/04/2020 07:14

I had the same situation yesterday with my cat. We'd had her for 14 years and we're so upset. My daughter is missing her terribly. We said goodbye in the car outside after the decision had been made. She could have a had a major surgery, but were told that there was no one confident enough to do it who is currently operating due to covid. Sad

PureedSocksAndPants · 01/04/2020 07:19

Flowers Oh Iggy I’m so sorry. What a lovely little pal she looks in your photo. I’m sure she was in no doubt you were doing your best and loved her. RIP Maisie and take care Iggy x

Patchworksack · 01/04/2020 07:23

I'm glad you were able to speak to the vet and get some closure. Please remember this is hard for vet staff as well, we normally bend over backwards to try and ensure owners can say goodbye in the way they want to. Much discussion of vet forums on the best way to manage euthanasia whist maintaining distance and the two best options are to administer a sedative and leave the animal with the owner until very sleepy, then take away for the final injection, or to put in a catheter and long line and administer the injection from 2m away so the owner can be present. There should not be any home visiting services in operation now unless an animal is actually trapped or unable to be moved. We do realise how difficult this is for owners, but it's a shit situation all around. For those of you who may be facing the decision during lockdown, talk to the vet first, see what can be managed.

BlueGheko · 01/04/2020 07:26

@GCAcademic If your dog is fearful ask about sedation prior to euthanasia, I would think your vet would be happy to give a sedation injection then bring your dog back to the car to stay with you until he goes off to sleep. I highly doubt the home visiting vets will be to carry out their work at this time. In the case of an owner being unable to get a gravely sick pet to the vets current advice is that the pet is placed in a carrier/crate outside the property for staff to collect, we are under no circumstances allowed to enter a clients property at the moment.
