Hello, I was on the last thread (I’ve NC since then) and my puppy tragically passed away at 19 weeks from anaphylactic shock.

My family and I decided we wanted to go ahead with another puppy as the best way to remember our boy, and we bring home a little girl ( pic attached!) in 10 days.

@Bayby that's so sad - I think a new pup is a lovely way to remember your old boy.

I have copied my last message on the old thread because I didn't check first to see if the new thread was up and running!

@namechanged984630 we are just over 3 weeks in and I am still finding it hard. He is lovely and I know he is just being a normal puppy but it is just so restrictive at the moment as we are constantly watching him - I miss my life before him. I am desperately hoping that I will feel better once he is trained but it still seems such a long way off.

@DuchessDarty that's what we have been doing today. Taking him out lots and massive praise if he goes outside. He has had 3 accidents inside today. What do you do when you leave them though? In a few weeks I will need to leave him a few hours in the morning and I don't think he will be able to last that long even though he does last around 6/7 hours at night.

Also, he is restricted to the back room and kitchen at the moment to stop him weeing everywhere. Is that the right thing or should we introduce him to other rooms downstairs/upstairs?

We had a lovely afternoon at the beach, we live about 45 mins away as well sunny but he just sleeps in the car!

He met loads of other dogs and seemed to love it. We've just had to bath him though as he got very sandy!!

Bayby that's so sad 😞 what did your puppy have a reaction to do you know? Your new puppy looks so cute, what breed is she?

@Keepsmiling1 that is how I feel. Almost like grief. And everyone I asked tells me it gets better after about six fucking months! I work from home for myself and finding it so tough.

Should introduce myself to the others! We have a ten-week-old retriever puppy.

I keep reading things saying they should be able to hold their bladders for an hour per month of their age. Mine is four months now and there is no way he can hold it for four hours. He can only really do two when he is tired in the evening and snoozing. Otherwise if it gets much past an hour and I’ve forgotten to take him out he has an accident. Hence why we can’t get past leaving him for an hour and a half in the day. That is very restrictive but I’m hoping he will become better at holding it soon.

Can I join my pup is 15 weeks . I’ve done the puppy thing before but seem to have forgot it all

@Bayby that is just so sad about your poor little puppy. You must have been heartbroken. Hope your new little one settles in well and helps heal your heart.

Sunny there's no way our pup can hold his bladder for more than 1-2 hours in the day. I think he tries to hold it more in his crate so I would only leave him alone if he's in there.

I think sometimes he gets a twitchy bladder as he does a few little wees in a short space of time, maybe a boy thing/marking?

@Girliefriendlikescake he does loads of tiny wees! It’s so annoying. I always think ‘great, he’s done a wee’ but then no, I have to stand there in the rain while he potters around doing lots more. He still doesn’t really like going outside without me and if I do manage to get him to go and do a wee he will do one quick one and then rush back to me at the door, so I know he won’t have properly emptied his bladder. Also needs a thorough sniff around to decide where’s best for each wee and poo 🙄
I can’t complain too much though as he is the most lovely nature’s little boy.

I have an 11 week old Lurcher. Shes beautiful and so smart! We've been following kikopup on YouTube and puppy has really got the hang of sit, down and go to bed. She's also getting there with off, leave it and drop.

What we are really struggling with is leaving her on her own. If she is not right next to me she will scream. It's the most awful sound! Like I am torturing her. I cant go more than a step away. Even if she can still see me she will cry and scream until she is standing right next to me.

Agghhh. Mantrapup just got caught under my feet - I didn't stand on him but more of a glancing kick. He cried and cried and didnt put any weight on it for a few mins. 5 mins later he's tearing around the garden as usual. That's ok right? Or do I need to be PPFB (precious puppy first born) and get him checked over?

I stood on Sunnypup yesterday as he was dancing around under my feet but it was just a yelp and didn’t limp. If he is racing around and putting weight on it I’d say it’s fine. If you notice he isn’t bearing weight then maybe get it checked. But even if it is tender it’s likely just bruised.

Nerve - sounds like your training is going really well. My pup is quite clingy and was very clingy at the start. I did the flitting thing - is basically flit from place to place, into the living room, sit down back up, into the kitchen, sit down, go to the sink, back to the chair etc. Lots and lots of moving and eventually they realise it’s a bit boring and pointless following you constantly. Actually I need to do this a bit more with mine as he is now fine with me in the same room but will follow me from room to room. You could start in a small area eg sink - chair - cooker - sink etc. You basically want to be making lots of movements quite often and he should start to stop following you as much.

Oh and don’t respond to the crying. I found at first when I was cooking he would follow me back and forwards between the fridge, cooker, sink etc but soon he realised I do this several times a day and don’t disappear and he relaxed.

Calm I wouldn't worry if he is running about on it now, he was probably exaggerating it to make you feel bad 😉

Nerve at puppy training the lady suggested putting the puppy the other side of a stair gate so he can see you and then gradually moving away and coming back. If they stay calm when you move back reward with a treat. If he's really stressing she said admit defeat for a bit and then try again in a few days.

The sea air knackered our pup out, he slept from 8pm til 7am with one quick loo break and has slept most of the day so far as well!!

Thanks. He's now absolutely fine but from how he reacted when he first did it I really thought it was broken. I've heard that whippets tend to be a bit dramatic and it would seem he's a true 100% whippet!!

So sorry to hear about your puppy Bayby. So very sad. You've done the right thing I reckon. You've a reason to keep going and a good distraction.

Grassypup has us wrecked. He's asleep now but he's wired usually. He's starting to look for permission before he jumps up and assaults us on the sofa. He's a divil for it. He's very bitey the last couple of days too. My poor sofa will never recover. I won't even talk about toilet training. I'm just not going there. He wasn't too bad the past couple of nights in his crate though we still leave the door open.

I think he's gonna be bigger than we thought. He's a Jack Russell cross so who knows what he's crossed with. He's definitely all terrier. Watching him stalk and chase prey is mesmerising. He caught and ate a butterfly yesterday.

Out of interest, do any of you plan on switching from puppy food when they're done teething?
I met a dog walker today who said a breeder friend recommends it as they grow at a slower rate so end up with healthier joints and better conformation.
I haven't a clue myself but it kinda makes sense. Just wondering if any of you know anything about it?

How old is grassypup? Our puppy (also a jrt cross) is a bugger for biting, it's def linked to tiredness though and he's much better on more sleep. I'm not sure about the food, when do they start losing teeth?!

We took girliepup for a walk earlier and he walked reasonably well on his lead, his recall is pretty good but he does tend to forget us if there's someone more interesting to say hello to 🤣

We've managed a day of no accidents but I've been watching him like a hawk which is quite stressful.

@Grassynoel the food our puppy is on is one that is suitable for their whole life, I think it’s called an ancestor food or something. It’s Millie’s Wolfhound kibble. So you could look into something like that. Our local, very good, independent pet shop said it’s great (he was on it at the breeders) and they also recommended Quantum and Eden.

What puppy cam do some of you use? I left him for the first time this morning and was horrible not knowing if he way upset or not

My puppy is now 16 weeks.... She's a Eurasier so quite a big breed but she has doubled in size..height, weight, everything since we got her.

Toilet training ...we have been so lucky, no poos in the house and I think 3 wees in total in the first week, and she has been able to hold it overnight since she was 10 weeks .

Downside is she pulls like a train if she sees a pigeon or another dog and we are working very hard on loose lead walking (clicker and treats) as she will be very strong when she is full grown. Recall is great..til she sees a dog or pigeon, but she defo has a stubborn streak and I suspect she will be a difficult teenager !

We don't leave her.. I work school hours and son works evenings so the most I have managed is 20 mins when I forgot to pick my other son up one evening. But she is definitely happy for us to go upstairs or to bed and leave her downstairs so I will just pop out a little more as time goes by.

Here she is begging for the last piece of DS1's pizza last night! She is so loving and funny and even tho she's teething now she doesn't do more than nibble us.
She steals footballs at the park.. embarrassing!
