Thanks for the tick treatment recommendations - I googled the products mentioned and came up with an MN thread that suggested it was quite a "contentious" topic! More questions for the local vet needed I think! Though, as said, I suspect Ddog will make the decision for us by rejecting the collar anyway...

BiteyShark · 13/03/2019 13:01

Yes lots of people are anti treating unless they have fleas/worms/ticks etc. The problem we have with ticks is he gets them after each walk whether with me or daycare and they tend to stick to his eyelids. No way can we pull them off so he needs something that kills them regularly so they fall off.

To be honest, we're not vets so we're just going to go with what the local vet says! And she's said the collar is very effective and obviously more economical, and if Ddog won't tolerate it we'll go with the pills.

I've never really thought about ticks before as I've always lived in cities and then since moving here I do a lot of hiking but I always wear trousers and long sleeves even when it's 30+ degrees because I'm too lazy to put sunscreen on every day. My friend's dad died following contracting Lyme Disease from a tick bite in South Africa, so actually I'd like to ask the vet/doctor about the situation here and protection for us as much as DDog!

Got the oil . Shop staff sort of knew what I was on about. Rescue Remedy. So she's had some tonight to see if it helps with the 3:30 boarder patrol . She has slept through for the past 3 nights which has been a shock. I'm at uni tomorrow and she's with my son , so not alone. We will see if it helps her stop pacing as much 🤞🏻

drinkswineoutofamug · 14/03/2019 17:37

Good results here! Dog had drops of rescue remedy before bed and put some in her water today. Had a walk before I went uni. She was left 2 hours . Slight chewing of bed. Was happy to see me. Daughter had been in to walk her as well. She already seems calmer . But I may be just getting my hopes up😂 I have my new rota for my placements which work better around the dog.
She was even calmer in the park for training. She's now chewing a pig trotter in the back garden after barking at the trees 😒

BiteyShark · 14/03/2019 18:07

Fingers crossed drinkswine that it continues.

drinks - don't forget that it has been really windy this week, and that makes a lot of noise, especially at night when the house is quiet. She may be reacting to that too.

drinkswineoutofamug · 15/03/2019 11:42

Steppemum. Since she came to us it's been a 2:30-3:30 boundary check. We have foxes and badgers. I've managed to stop it some night by telling her to go lie down. But some nights she paces the bedroom and scratching the door.

She's worn out now from an hour running in the park, so going out. Partner sometimes gets up with her as well, so it's not all up to me. He walks her in the evening too, as I've said she's the family dog not my dog. Partner did have a wtf moment this morning when I asked him what we are getting for her birthday. He was like it a dog. I'm like she's family. I'm thinking some toys and a new collar, but I'm daft about her.

steppemum · 15/03/2019 12:14

sorry, I got the impression she was new to your house!

Ah, dog birthdays....

I woudl just point out that steppedog's Christmas stocking was bigger than the kids and they had more fun opening his than their own.
It wasn't intended to be so large, but EVERY SINGLE person in the family thought that he just needed a little something.....

drinkswineoutofamug · 15/03/2019 12:33

😂

BiteyShark · 16/03/2019 17:33

drinkswine BiteyDog also had a habit of a 3am toilet check/garden patrol. He does this less often now, instead choosing to get up, flap his ears, scratch his bed and then go back to sleep Hmm

drinkswineoutofamug · 16/03/2019 17:42

Bitey I can stop her if I make her bed 🤔
Went for a squirrel chase through the woods and met a family with a greyhound/collie. Beautiful dog only 5 months old. Bigger than our dog! I wished them luck 😂
I'm just reprinting all my uni work as it's got lovely muddy dog paw prints on it and I doubt my tutor would be impressed 😂
Hope you've all had a reasonable Saturday even with the crap weather

BiteyShark · 16/03/2019 17:48

If your tutor is a dog person maybe they wouldn't mind Wink

The wind was pretty ferocious today but we braved it this morning for a long walk. We are all feeling tired today as I went out last night and apparently DH said BiteyDog wouldn't settle and kept looking for me until I got home which was very late Grin

OP posts:
drinkswineoutofamug · 16/03/2019 18:10

It gets seen by the NMC so need to impress sadly 😂
Yep I can't even go to the loo without a shadow whining at the door because she's not invited in

drinkswineoutofamug · 17/03/2019 16:07

Dog just been nipped behind the ear by another dog on the park. She's got a bite mark, no blood. The other owner just put their dog on the lead and walked off. 😡 didn't ask if mine dog was ok as I'm asking about theirs. They were running together and it turned and launched at her.
Will phone the vets in the morning. She seems ok, it's me that's shaken

BiteyShark · 17/03/2019 16:44

Poor MugDog and you Sad. Hope she's ok.

My being trained medical eye tells me it may need a stitch. It's not bled . She let me clean it and has wandered off to find the bone she buried in the back garden. It's really fucked me off how the other owner didn't even stop , I asked if their dog was ok? To their turned back! By the time I had done a limb check they had gone! Surely they should of ( being responsible owners) waited to see if my dog was ok & swapped details with me?
She had played with this dog before. Today they were running side by side then the other dog just jumped on mine and bit her head. No warning. No barking, snarling. The owner ran up grabbed his dog, put it on a lead and went. Sorry I'm repeating myself. Makes me wonder if it's done it before? I've looked up basic dog wound care , the nearest ooh vets is 30miles away , I will phone my vet in the morning and take her to be seen. I have pain killers. So fucking angry 😡

BiteyShark · 17/03/2019 17:10

They probably didn't stop because they don't give a shit if their dog hurts another having come across similar owners in the past. I find it very hard to reconcile that dogs are property but it's seems that if your property hurts another persons dog property quite a few people don't care. In any other part of life it would be considered far more seriously Angry.

BorderlineExperimental · 17/03/2019 17:12

To be honest, going by what you've said, it sounds like it might have been play getting out of hand rather than anything more serious. Pointy dogs tend to really like instigating exciting chase games which can escalate very quickly and dogs can start nipping or trying to take each other down by chomping at their necks.

I don't let my whippets run off lead with other dogs for precisely this reason, there's just too much scope for accidental injuries with dogs who they don't really know. They're really good between themselves but even so there's been the odd nipped ear or grazed side if they've got too giddy.

I'd keep an eye on how she's playing with other dogs and how they're playing with her. If there are any indications it's getting a bit too intense you can step in to calm things down.

twinkletoedelephant · 17/03/2019 17:17

Ddog has had his first walk today, we drove to local park and he was so excited he meet a handful of dogs very nicely and snelled everything. After a month with him indoors and carrying him everywhere it's fantastic to clip on a lead and off we go.

He is shattered now, we only did 20 minutesGrin

BiteyShark · 17/03/2019 17:23

Sounds like a lovely walk twinkle

We have miles of woods and countryside here but I need open land with no stones to be able to throw a ball occasionally so have been driving around trying to find different walks as getting a bit bored of our usual ones.

I think I have training fatigue. Really struggling to motivate myself to go to the training classes in the evenings. We do two a week now and really I should think about cutting it to one but which one?

Agility is more sociable but is often cancelled in winter and is an issue when he injures himself which is a lot. Scent training not as sociable but better all year round and can be done if he can't exercise much. Arghhhhhh I don't know what to do but equally I am bloody knackered.

OP posts:
drinkswineoutofamug · 18/03/2019 18:47

Could you do seasonal training? Agility in the summer?
I've got a mental hound. She helped herself to. Chocolate donut. Thought she was quiet. Mad rush to read ingredients. No chocolate only flavoured. She's having major sugar rush and even after a 2 hr walk, managed to slip past me up stairs and bounced on my bed covered in mud while barking . She's walking round like the Cheshire Cat. Googled dog ate chocolate donut, not too worried. Got told today by a fellow dog walker that the dog that nipped her yesterday has form. No wonder the owner gave it legs quick

BiteyShark · 18/03/2019 18:59

It's amazing isn't it how many chocolate foods don't contain much chocolate Grin

Problem is with seasonal training is that I might lose my place as you have a max number of dogs. Agility much closer and starts earlier but scent training is possibly more suited to BiteyDog as he cries in anticipation of his turn. I think I might be just feeling lazy as I could quite happily give both up right now but can't as just paid for the next group of sessions.

I periodically feel like that about training too. It’s such a flipping effort - rush home from work, collect dog, drive there, get back late, takes up the whole evening.

It is good for him though. And thank God we no longer do the Friday 8.30-9.30pm class. I suppose I should just be grateful I don’t also have 5 children to ferry around!
