Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

DP drove and I sat in the back with puppy he cried the whole 45 minute journey. I think it would be easier to take someone with you. Our breeder told us to bring a towel as most puppies are sick on their first car journey too, he was sick just as we turned into our street.

dangermouseisace · 20/02/2019 13:45

Oh boatsnack that sounds hellish.

My thought had been eldest kid to hold puppy going home. Maybe an adult would be better. One that either doesn’t mind being covered in bodily outputs or that would be willing to drive whilst I looked after the puppy.

BiteyShark · 20/02/2019 14:40

KateGrey lots of us on here, including myself, have gone through various degrees of puppy blues. It's not uncommon to think wtf have I done and want to turn the clock back. It does get better so just hang on in there.

We had a soft crate for rescue puppy (12 weeks old) in car but she was shaking so much it wasn't going to work. So we wrapped her up in her blanket from rescue centre and she lay on my husbands lap in back of car with me driving. After 2 days at home to settle her in, we started taking her out in the car every day in her soft crate to get used to traveling. 3 weeks in and now happily goes into crate and goes to sleep in the car :-)

bollocksthemess · 20/02/2019 21:44

Messypup sat on my knee on the way home from the breeders as I had someone to drive. Her second car journey the next day was a necessity, was two hours long and in a crate on the front seat. She howled like a loon for an hour and a half.
We then had to get in the car later the same day. She howled til we got on the motorway.
The next day we got in the car and she howled til the end of the road.
We’re on day 5 and she gets in the car and goes to sleep.

I ignored the howling, didn’t look at her or speak to her at all. There was nothing I could do anyway, I had to drive.

I pick my little Pup up in 5 weeks, I think I’ve covered most things but is there anything that seems obvious now that you didn’t think of before bringing home?

We have a 2 hour journey home, my mum will have pup while I drive. Am thinking blanket on knee and handy puppy pads in case of accidents?

Waited so long to be in a position to get a dog, I’m a student at the moment so a lot of free time and my lovely mum gonna dog sit whenever needed

Hello, this little beauty came home with us today. Shes 8.5 weeks old so I'm aware she's young. She's a Grand Basset Griffin Vendeen and is lovely, but hated the car journey home so now won't even look at her crate. Has t eaten since we got home and we'ed one outside and once inside. She's very anxious if we leave the room and cries a lot, what's the best suggestion for tonight? I'm not going to sleep with her but I'd like her to be comfortable.

mini she's adorable. You'd be best sleeping very close by for at least the first couple of nights. It helps with taking the pup out at night for a wee, but also the more she can be near you, the more settled and confident she'll get.

MiniCooperLover · 25/02/2019 13:58

Thankfully we didn't have too bad a night. Today has been a mixture of her not wanting me to leave whatever room she's been in to then feeling more confident to find her water. A couple of wet accidents inside (albeit on a pad) but many more wees outside plus poo with her walking to the door to indicate.

I've been reading up but some ideas of good play to stimulate and tire her would be great.

MiniCooperLover · 25/02/2019 14:00

This is her napping after some garden play and working on steps in and out of the garden 😊

Here is our little ball of fluff, 4 weeks Friday we got her.

She decided that she liked to lie on every driveway she came across Grin

Mini she's just toooo cute.

MiniCooperLover · 26/02/2019 06:11

The poor thing (and by extension us) has had such a bad night. She hates her crate, whimpers then builds up to full on crying as soon as she's in 😩 She must be exhausted as she's been crying almost all night. We've been up regularly to take her out and she's almost deliriously happy to see us until we put her back in. I know it's probably that she's never been alone and I'm with her pretty much all day but how long did it take others to serried in their crates? 😳

GetTheStartyParted · 27/02/2019 19:21

My first puppy never settled in the crate, she was far too anxious. Luckily she was not a chewer and toilet trained very quickly so we could leave her out.

Little pup was fine the first night, only cried for 10 minutes on the second night and 2 minutes on the third, happily takes herself to her crate when it's bedtime now.

I don't know how much success people have had crate training anxious pups but we didn't get anywhere with ours Blush

Mrsoh39 · 27/02/2019 20:08

How is she today Mini? hope she's settled a bit more now.

We haven't got a crate, if she's chewed anything it's things I didn't realise were about so our own fault.

MiniCooperLover · 27/02/2019 21:21

To be honest I'm a little worried. Had a really good day with her today, very good toileting and she has napped some but maybe not as much as you’d think due to waking up if I leave my office for example. Earlier I was trying to put the garden table up and it snapped shut and hit the ground. She was at my feet, I hadn’t seen her, she screamed and ran off. I don’t think it hit her (friend who was here said she thought not) but since then I’m a bit worried. The other nights we’ve had to force her to bed, this evening she went in her crate (that she’s hated up to now) and literally fell asleep while we ate dinner. We moved her to kitchen and she barely stirred. I’m so worried I've hurt her 😳 She has walked and run around and done the steps in to the house since. She has vets for her jabs tomorrow. What do you think? Tired and just used to kitchen as her sleeping place now? I've just been to check on her and she lifted her head to look at me but that was if.

MiniCooperLover · 27/02/2019 21:22

This is her third night

MiniCooperLover · 27/02/2019 21:22

Sorry, fourth night

GetTheStartyParted · 28/02/2019 08:46

Hope shes ok, they really do worry you don't they!

As you're at the vets today, they will probably give her a quick health check (mine does). If not, then ask them to and either way, just tell them your concerns.

The vet we see is very good at reassuring me when I'm worrying! I once messaged them on Facebook at 6.30am panicking, hoping that they would reply once open. By 7am they had answered me Smile

Boatsnack3 · 28/02/2019 11:13

I think she'd probably just tired mini it's a lot of getting used too. DP and I had to take turns on the couch when we first got puppy and even now 4 weeks later I have to wait till he's asleep before I leave the room or he howls the house down.

Anyone got any tips for a carsickness? tried to take puppy in the car on Monday, he cried the whole time then was violently sick after about 10minutes.

MiniCooperLover · 28/02/2019 19:43

Thank you. Vets went well and she was a great girl, then went manic when we got home and is now sleeping off the jab I think. I'll wake her soon so she is ready for bed properly later. She's slept brilliantly the last couple of nights. I explained my worries to the vet and she checked her over and said she was fine 👍

Funnily enough considering she's quite a rare breed the vets said they'd had another one (a boy) in a couple of weeks ago and he lives about 30 mins drive away. Our breeder told us she'd sold a boy who is a couple of weeks older to that town and it turns out it's him. I think they're cousins or possibly half-siblings depending on if they have the same dad. How random is that ?!? I've emailed the breeder to ask her. Even more random they're registered with our vets.

Mrsoh39 · 01/03/2019 11:39

Oh I'm so pleased the vet said everything was ok, they like to worry us don't they.

sounds like they could be related then Grin

When does the chewing stop, and the biting? She's a bugger for it Grin

MiniCooperLover · 01/03/2019 15:04

Yes I checked and they're from the same Dad 😊👍

GetTheStartyParted · 01/03/2019 16:58

@Mrsoh39 I bet she's better with the chewing and biting than when you first got her. With my first dog, it calmed a lot once her puppy teeth were gone. I'm hoping this is the case with our new puppy. She's loads better than when we first got her, we tell her no each time and redirect her onto a toy.

Mrsoh39 · 01/03/2019 17:15

Yes we do the same, and it does work, it's hard to tell if it's any better or not, she still grabs clothes and is bitey too Grin
