Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

And just when I thought she was growing out of baby shark Bitey ness she chews the wall again Angry

The living room is like pets are us with toys, gets plenty of exercise, has a better social life than me between play group and training and still I turn my back and she chews the wall!

Whhhhhhhhhy Sad

Can I join please? We don’t get our labradoodle, or as my soon says a poobador (mainly poodle) until 10 March ish, when he’ll be 8 weeks. I’m so excited and nervous and trying to be as prepared as possible, so others experiences might help prepare me! Slightly rubbish obligatory photo attached.

mind boggled by thought of a puppy chewing a wall though...just...how?!

Tumbleweed101 · 13/02/2019 12:09

Well, I wouldn’t recommend getting a puppy the same day you come down with flu!

Fortunately puppy has been good really but the constant watching for accidents when you’ve got chills is hard work!

Sleep??? Help!!
We've had our pup 2 weeks nearly and I'm still on the sofa . She's had a few good night but this week every hour she's been up!

BiteyShark · 13/02/2019 15:22

maid1306 what are you doing when she gets up? Make sure you are not rewarding that by playing or fussing etc. I used to pick mine up and take outside for a quick toilet break (even if he didn't need to go) then straight back to bed. I didn't talk to him or anything so eventually he got the idea that night was for sleeping or peeing.

maid1306 · 13/02/2019 17:22

That's exactly what I'm doing. No fuss just put back to bed but she's not settling.
With our older dog it took 4 nights then she slept alone.
All the advice seems to have changed in 10 years tho.
I think I'm just going have to ride the storm. Hoping it's just a bad few nights as we had made great progress last week

veiledsentiments · 13/02/2019 17:37

We have had our 5 month King Shepherd for three months now. He needs walking 3 times a day, and is still lively. Also take him to the beach to swim. Still goes bonkers at around 7pm. Unfortunately have old rescue dog too, have had him for 11 years, and the poor bugger just had 11 teeth taken out, so big bouncy puppy is really feckin him off. Very hard work. At least when you have kids they can come with you. Dogs not always appropriate. Lots of work!

Mrsoh39 · 13/02/2019 17:45

What everyone needs a 13 year old who loves dogs, just had my cousins daughter round and she's wore mine out, I'm taking hints from her and how she played and will be doing more later on.

Does anyone have any insight into a potential issue I have? I’m doing a course once a week at college in the evenings. I’m out for 4 hours in total, and my kids are off at their dads that night. I’m wondering what I need to put in place for our puppy to be looked after. I’m thinking I’ll need to take a couple of weeks off at the start (he’ll be 8 weeks when I get him). And then would I need to get someone around to “babysit” him whilst I’m out? I’m thinking someone popping in for half an hour/an hour is not going to be sufficient- am I right? I’ve never had a puppy before but I’m assuming it’s like having a baby...

Feckitall · 15/02/2019 12:04

We have had to either cancel appointments or take our pup with us and one of us stay in the car with her..

Boatsnack3 · 15/02/2019 16:31

We had to get my FIL up to puppysit when I had an appointment a fortnight ago.

I can usually sneak out for 45mins if he's sleeping but we haven't left him any longer than that yet.

DP had to take annual leave this week as DD has been in hospital and he's going to have to take a couple hours next week too while I take DD to the orthodontist.

My parents in law have a westie puppy who is about 10 months now and she can be left a couple of hours. They have a puppycam so they can check in on her using an app on their phones. I don't think they've ever left her as long as 4 hours.

dangermouseisace · 16/02/2019 07:58

Thanks boatsnack and feckitall. Sounds like I’m not being overly precious in my expectations. I’ll have to see what I can sort out...

dangermouseisace · 16/02/2019 07:59

And I hope your DD is ok boatsnack

bollocksthemess · 16/02/2019 17:23

Messypup arrived yesterday! Traveled beautifully, all wees and poos outside for 24 hours, bar one when my DP didn’t quite realise that ‘take her out as soon as she wakes up’ means within 3 seconds!
Slept 10-5 last night in her crate, at which point she whined to get out and had a massive wee outside, then we all went back to sleep til 6.30 when we had to get her out of her bed!
She had to come on an errand with me today and howled like she was being killed in her car crate, probably because she could see me but not get to me. She then charmed the ladies in the shop and had her photo taken, howling was kept to a minimum on the way home.
I live between two houses at the moment so tonight we’re packing up and moving, just waiting for her tea to digest so she can have a poo before we leave. The lunchtime poo took 1 hour 45 minutes to arrive after eating so I’m not holding my breath!

She is sooo cute. Glad it’s been going on so far bollocksthemess and hope it continues.

I’m delaying our puppy for a week as the kids really want to be there when we pick him up, and they’re at their dads the weekend that dangerpuppy is 8 weeks. So an extra week of waiting!

GetTheStartyParted · 17/02/2019 12:23

We have a labradoodle that is almost 2 and took the plunge and now have a 13 week old cockapoo.

Big pup hates being alone so the plan was to get her some company and thankfully they love each other already.

Little pup is completely different and so much more relaxed, she sleeps all night in her crate and listens to me!

She is getting there with toilet training and biting. Little pup is so much more food oriented that training may be a little easier.

Big pup is a HUGE bundle of energy still but is being a good girl in teaching pup some manners.

So much easier second time round. I'm not sure if it's because I'm more confident or if it's because she is so easy going compared to the neurotic fluffball we got first time round Grin

dangermouseisace · 17/02/2019 18:36

They are so sweet. Glad they get on!

GetTheStartyParted · 17/02/2019 19:36

Thank you @dangermouseisace it's a big relief.

I bet you can't wait for your new arrival.

KateGrey · 18/02/2019 16:30

Any tips for a pup that hates the car? He goes in a crate as the kids take all the seats up unless my husband isn’t out with us. But he cries 😭

Feckitall · 20/02/2019 09:56

Our pup hates the crate, usually is sick or poops...I'm currently sat in the car, outside the hospital while DH is in for an appointment with Dpup sat next to me secured with seatbelt attachment...she is happy with that..
must be insane

Boatsnack3 · 20/02/2019 10:51

Ours hates the car too. He cries and howls the whole time. I'm hoping lots of short journeys to fun places and he'll get used to it.

KateGrey · 20/02/2019 11:28

Seems quite common then. We’ll keep going with the car and hoping once he can start walking he’ll find he’s going fun places.

KateGrey · 20/02/2019 12:06

Has anyone ever felt puppy remorse? I love him to bits but already starting to feel a bit trapped as some places we can’t take him to.

dangermouseisace · 20/02/2019 13:13

Sorry more questions, no answers yet as still waiting for dangerpup to be 8 weeks.

I’m thinking about how to get him home...it’s a 1.5 hour journey. I’ve got a plastic pet carrier. It’s our rabbits which they both go in- 1 is bigger than a cat so it would be big enough. When I picked them up (rescues) they just chilled out for the whole journey in the carrier secured on the front seat. It doesn’t sound like pups do that though! How did everyone else pick up their pups? Do I need another person?!
