Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

Daniel can you come train Chestypup and I’ll have her back when she’s obedient? Grin
Very cute pup, hope vets goes ok. I’ve just retrieved a stone that Chestypup was chewing.

It’s my birthday today and I’m celebrating by standing in the garden in my pjs waiting for a wee Hmm

How’s everyone doing?

Sure chesty soon as I've had more than four hours unbroken sleep I'm all yours. He he

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 10:07

Wolfie good to know you had shredded sanity as I’m losing the will to live Grin

She’s having a snooze so I’m going to run around the house doing everything I can’t get done while she’s trying to hang off my neck!

ouch and little what breeds have you got?

Am jealous of you all and doing commands already! Are you using treats?
Must find time to start some training!

Chesty thanks for the welcome. He's a Rhodesian Ridgeback so he'll be a big boy once he's fully grown! All these pups are so cute!

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 11:46

Can we see a pic purple?

OP posts:
purplegoat · 06/12/2018 12:25

We don't have him home yet. Just a over a week to go! We're busy getting the house ready and reading everything we can find! This is one of the most recent pics we got from the breeder. He's already grown so much since we went to see the litter and their mum.

These pups are gorgeous 😍

He’s a miniature dachshund. I’ll post a pic when he’s here.

I need to finish puppy proofing the garden today but I have a feeling I’m going to be doing it in the dark!

LittleLongDog · 06/12/2018 12:55

And happy birthday ChestyNut. I hope your puppy knows to be extra snuggly and fun to you today.

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 14:35

Thanks Little unfortunately she didn’t get the birthday good behaviour memo Grin

Purple cute pup

I may be talking to myself but really struggling. She has a couple of hour sessions a day where she is awful.
Shredding puppy pads, biting my feet and legs, chewing everything she shouldn’t. Just flinging herself around.
I’ve tried distracting with toys, ignoring etc but I’m finding the biting hard to ignore as it hurts.

Starting to wonder what I’ve done Sad

I found when mine was bloody awful running about like a loon or very very bitey it was because he was overtired and over stimulated. Think of them like being a really hyper tired toddler who doesn't know they need to sleep.

I used to put mine in his crate and he would spend about 2 minutes trying to tear up his bed before crashing out to sleep. When he woke he was much calmer Grin

Cotonrafa · 06/12/2018 17:56

Can I join too feeling stressed brought home 12 week old puppy n Sunday. Never had a dog before so everything new to me. Books I have read don't account for a pup who doesn't speak English, should have called him gnasher teeth everywhere! Bought a nyla puppy bone read on the internet that they should not be eaten, turned round to see top part gone.......aaaghhhh. Then discovered that it was the edible one for a 6 month old pup I had given him But at least it was edible. My heart rate only calming down now. Think I will be on this site a lot!!

Wolfiefan · 06/12/2018 18:01

Ha. Mine has eaten the end of a few non edible nylabones. Shock
I would ditch the puppy pads Chesty. They’re one more thing for them to chew and only teach a pup to pee indoors.
There were times I considered crating myself when pup was little. Hmm

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 18:05

She collapse at my feet and went to sleep resting on my slipper, have put her in bed Wolfie
I’m counting down the hours to bedtime for a break. This is normal right?

I loved my Chestyboy so much, he was my best mate but sometimes I feel like I don’t even like her Sad

Coton your very welcome! Chestypup is chewing anything she finds in the garden, so spending time chasing her to get them out!

Completely and utterly normal. I remember vividly sitting on the floor and cuddling her crying that she would go back if I didn’t bloody love her so much. Blush

purplegoat · 06/12/2018 18:23

Happy Birthday Chesty! Sorry you're having a tough day. I'm wondering what I've let myself in for Shock

It can only get easier though right?

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 18:23

That’s the thing Wolfie I don’t know if I do love her yet. I just feel like I spend all day “doing” feeding her, taking her out, cleaning the accidents and the shredded pads and no real time to begin to “ love” her.

Then I look at her sleeping in her little bed and feel terrible because we’ve taken her from her mum and the house she knows and all she has is us.

Sick of blubbing today, Happy birthday to me Grin

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 18:25

purple thank you! Don’t let me put you off I’m just being dramatic I think.

Our last dog was so independent it’s come as a shock how much work it is.

PuppyMonkey · 06/12/2018 18:31

Aww, OP, I do sympathise. If I can give you any hope, my little bugger is 24 weeks next Monday and I have finally realised he’s all right you know.

Wolfiefan · 06/12/2018 18:33

Happy birthday to you!
I didnt enjoy the puppy stage much at all. Felt like I was doing nothing but clearing up and feeding and toilet training and trying to stop her biting me and the house. She couldn’t be left. At ALL.
But I had waited so many years for her.

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 18:36

That’s Exactly how I feel Wolfie

Puppy that’s reassuring to hear.....14 weeks to go Grin

Wolfiefan · 06/12/2018 18:38

It also doesn’t help when you’ve lost a much loved family member. That special one that you had all the memories with. You knew each other’s little ways.
We lost our first cats. We have two more kitties. I do love them. But they’re not the same as the first two if that makes sense.

BiteyShark · 06/12/2018 18:48

ChestyNut Honestly I didn't start to love my puppy for many many months. I felt responsible for him but love was a very slow burn. I adore him now and simply can't imagine life without him but at the beginning if someone has magicked him away I would have been relieved.

LittleLongDog · 06/12/2018 18:50

This is exactly the place to be when you feel like that Chesty. You might not love her yet, you’ve barely begun to know each other. Don’t despair.

We’re not planning to use puppy pads because I’ve heard the same thing so often: that they get shredded.

But my pup’s not even here yet so don’t take my word for anything!
