Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

We brought our 15 week old rescue pup home last week. She's taken to toilet training really quickly but seems to have a bit of separation anxiety. I can't leave the room without her darting out in front of me. How do I get her to stay in the living room on her own for a few mins? I've puppy proofed the living room so happy to leave her alone in the room. She has lots of toys, Kong, etc so won't be bored. All help welcome.

If you ever manage to work this secret out I'd love to know!!! I now have 2 shadows.

NewYoiker · 30/01/2019 00:15

I feel a bit like I'm losing it! I'm off work for another week and I feel like I'm living ground hog day, she's ok during the day but as soon as DH gets home she's a menace

I'm close to losing my shit at DH to be honest, it was him who found her but he puts no effort in at all because he's busy at work so he comes home and is tired and doesn't want to play with her or thinks giving her a toy is playing with her where she just wants to play fetch with him or tug of war. Then she gets pissed off and starts finding her own fun whilst I'm cooking and then he misses her eating kindling or pooing by the front door because he isn't paying attention.

It's not her fault it's his! But he went into the kitchen with her earlier to play without Hugo being around and I walked in and gave him some treats to give her which apparently was the wrong thing to do Blush but it just felt wrong him asking her sit and stuff for no treats at all. So then he shouted at me.

He got upset later on that she doesn't fall asleep on his lap (he always has his laptop or iPad on him as he's working at night so there is no space), she cries when I leave the room and he thinks she hates him but he doesn't interact with her so why would she want to spend time with him?

It's like having a child it's all on me and it's so hard!

Anyone have any ideas of things he can do to improve his bond with her?

Wow that's long sorry!

It will happen naturally when she’s feeling a bit more settled. It’s still very early days - she’s only known your home a week compared to the 14 weeks in the home she was born in and had her family in. She’ll settle, give her time and lots of love.

NewYoiker that sounds so hard! Could he do puppy training classes with her?

LittleLongDog · 31/01/2019 12:40

I have just discovered Yak milk chews. Huge fan. LittlePup has been busy with his forever. I think I’m going to have to take it away from him so he sleeps!!

Notrusthere · 01/02/2019 13:10

Can I join?!

Picking this one up in 1 weeks 😁

Very excited but under no illusions, sure I will need a lot of support from this board especially in the early days.

Last dog was toilet trained in 3 days and slept through from night 2...no competition then little fella! 😉

Can I join?
We picked our puppy up last night.
All going well and our older girl is now finally accepting her after a testing few hours.
Just dreading the sleeping or not so much tonight

Too cute Notrusthere & maid1306!! How’d the first night go maid?

maid1306 · 02/02/2019 12:06

First night wasn't too bad here. She settled in the cage on her own for ah hour at a time from 10-4 am. Then on me on the sofa 🙈
I didn't lock the cage door just closed it too and she had woke up let herself out and had a poo at 4am so quite impressed with that. Just need to persevere to get her on her own a bit more and longer.
Our older dog is coming to terms with her now too which is a relief

Hope everyone else is doing ok

Mrsoh39 · 03/02/2019 14:01

Picked up this monkey on Friday, she is 8 weeks and 3 days, last night I took her in the garden and she done a wee and poo, woke up this morning to no accidents, so she's done really well with toileting.
She is nipping and pulling on clothes though, so try and give her a toy when she does it, going to get a whistle and clicker tomorrow to start with recall training, I am shattered but can't wait to get her out and about.

These are my 2 Chihuahua mix pups and they are 5 months, we got them when they were 18 weeks and they came from a Bulgarian rescue. They are from the same litter but are nothing alike
I've read this whole thread and it's made me feel so much better about puppy life! It's been 12 years since we had a pup (we lost her in Aug last year)
One thing I'm thankful for is that my 2 newbies have each other which stops a lot of the nipping you guys seem to be experiencing! They play fight a lot and wear each other out!
A problem we are experiencing is one is terrified to go for a walk and does not enjoy this at the moment.... she isn't very food led so coaxing and convincing her it's a fun activity is very slow indeed... we have had an accidental breakthrough over the weekend in that she realises she likes cheerios (dropped on the floor by ds) so we are using these to get her out on the lead. Very slow progress but progress nonetheless!
Anyway, thank you for sharing your experiences, it's very helpful!

Joining. We’ve got a 12 week old pup. He’s doing okay on toileting. He can sit and comes 8/10 times when we call. Still working on down, leave it and stay. Bit paranoid I’m going to get it all wrong and end up with a crazy rogue dog. We’re crate training him and he’s a bit mixed on the crate preferring to sleep on the floor when we’re at home but am preserving with the crate. He also hates the car.

Gotaprettypup · 08/02/2019 19:02

Re Read this today to reassure myself that the little chewing/bitey whirlwind that is prettypup is actually normal, although DHs hands are a bruised mess! He has thin skin and is on aspirin, bleeds like mad!!

Plus sides...she knows sit, will do heel up and down hallway, will respond to come sometimes Looking forward to her second jabs at the beginning of March...

We are still taking it turns to sleep downstairs with her...hopefully over next week or so we can progress with moving ourselves upstairs!! Upstairs is puppy no go cat sanctuary...

Mrsoh39 · 08/02/2019 21:04

I feel your pain Gotaprettypup. Ours is in a hypo mood and is very bitey and growly if we try and stop her, so she's been put in the kitchen to calm down, she's going for her 2nd lot of jabs a week Monday, I can't wait to get her out and about, plus dd2 has been poorly all week so I'm exhausted.

Gotaprettypup · 10/02/2019 10:05

Oh god what a night, she whined/cried..played up, all flaming night...because I tried to go to bed, DH was with her downstairs! Hmm..

Boatsnack3 · 11/02/2019 17:14

Hi ive come to join you all our gorgeous boy Charlie, is a 12 week old interior decorator border collie who needs no sleep and loves nothing more than stripping wallpaper.

dd(10) is missing her only child status alot

Mrsoh39 · 11/02/2019 17:28

Photo please Boatsnack.
We don't have wall paper so our Collie can't strip that, she does however like to chew us, she's going for her 2nd lot of jabs next week, I can't wait to get her out.
How was she last night Gotaprettypup

Boatsnack3 · 11/02/2019 17:38

Mrsoh39 · 11/02/2019 18:03

Oh Boatsnack3 how adorable, and this is how they lure us in Grin

Gotaprettypup · 11/02/2019 20:03

Last night was a bit better thanks, she fell asleep on the carpet so DH sneaked out went to bed. This was about 9!!! She woke up and went into her crate and went back to sleep and woke me at midnight so she went out for a wee..then went back into her crate herself and slept until 4, and we did a repeat...then 5-6 she was awake then went back to sleep until 8.15...I'm not feeling well so I'm hoping for a decent night tonight!! I'm off work this week so hoping we can crack nights...is sleeping through realistic? She is 10 weeks..

Mrsoh39 · 12/02/2019 09:58

We've done really well at night with ours, but she is a sod during the day, 2nd jabs Monday so hoping the walks will help her.
Sounds like a good night you had at least.

bollocksthemess · 12/02/2019 15:55

Hi, can I join? My Hungarian Vizsla puppy comes home on Friday, she’ll be exactly 8 weeks old. I’ve waited since last summer for her, she was born just before Christmas.
I’m in two minds about crate training. I’ve never put a dog in a crate, but I’ve always lived in places where it didn’t matter if they ate the skirting board a bit or scratched the doors. Current house is quite nice so could do without puppy completely destroying it.

Also, is the current wisdom that they shouldn’t be left at all at first? She’ll come to my (outdoor, flexible) job when she’s had her jabs, but will have to be left sporadically from day one while I feed and muck out the horses who live outside my back door.

I suspect I’ve been doing too much reading about problems, as every other dog I’ve had hasn’t been any bother, I’ve carried on with life as normal and they’ve just fitted in with the occasional bit of mild inconvenience.
