Puppy support

Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

That’s good to hear chocolate although I’m not sure we’ll both survive 8 months of this!

And NEVER EVER again Grin

Today is the day! I’ll be back here later with a photo. VERY excited and nervous.

Sarahmoore0510 · 07/12/2018 09:43

@ChestyDog we mastered ‘down’ yesterday but seems to have forgotten over night 😂 (a good one to start with if leg attacking is a nightmare)

@LittleLongDog he is ten weeks tomorrow, will be able to go out the weekend before Xmas! Feels like a lifetime away!

Cotonrafa · 07/12/2018 09:49

We got the bitey legs, bitey slippers, bitey chewy bed bitey everything anyone got any ideas also he chews the Vetbed his sleeping bed and really everything. Would love to be able to stop this before he gets used to doing it. Is there anything I can give him 12 weeks old. At the moment I try saying no but this is not always successful if I am standing I do go still but the wee b still bites. Any suggestions welcome I am a first time dog owner but sadly just did not realise how hard it can be. Then he goes to sleep flat on his back and you just got to love him! Love this site I now know it's not just me!

ChestyNut · 07/12/2018 09:56

coton I think we have the same pup!

What has everyone’s bets said bout vaccinations and going out, you all seem to be allowed about before us Sad

OP posts:
Chocolatebourbons · 07/12/2018 10:10

Chestynut I seem to remember we had to wait until after the second vacs before she could go out in public.

BiteyShark · 07/12/2018 10:22

Chesty the vaccinations depend on the type.

I pleaded with my vets to split the second one. So at 10 weeks we had our second and could go out on road walks at 11 weeks old. However we then had the L4 at 12 weeks so it was another 2 weeks after that when we could go on farms, in the forest and boggy areas.

Sarah lots of us have experienced puppy regret. Mine lasted a bloody long time but it does get better. However, unlike Wolfie I haven't got over it yet and there is no way I would have another puppy right now Grin. You must be bonkers Wolfie thinking about another Grin

BiteyShark · 07/12/2018 10:26

For the biting there appears to be four methods.

The yelping and briefly stopping play except yelping makes some dogs even more bitey and hyped up.

The statue so stand still and turn your back but this is really hard to do when their teeth are stuck in you.

The redirection onto a toy. Good if your dog actually chews the toy then and not you.

And finally the hurdle over the baby gate or shove pup in crate/behind gate etc. Anything to get pup and you separated.

I did number 4 but people have had success with the others.

ChestyNut · 07/12/2018 10:41

Bitey we’re having L4 so maybe why we have to wait till 13 weeks.

Just trying to book her onto puppy course Grin

Don’t think it helps that Mum has flu so normally she’s help as she’s ours but I’m looking after her as well.

Luckily it’s only me she’s savaging.
I like the tree method but hard as the nips hurt!

I’m feeling the pressure as there’s so much to work on, I don’t want a naughty adult dog!

They do grow out of the biting. Honestly they do. You can also try time out techniques on them. 30 seconds in a downstairs loo (so long as there's nothing fun for them to chew) every time they do it. Or a similar sized boring room. Not the garden. Or the crate as suggested.

It's one of those things you have to persevere with. Like lead walking. That is the hardest training trick to get right.

Margomini · 07/12/2018 11:23

Hi guys!

Can I please join! We will also be picking up our puppy today! Grin A 8 week old miniature dachshund!

So very excited and nervous too! I have read SO much information just hope we can attempt to put it into practise!

I am currently having a debate (in my own head) as the breeder has been using puppy pads with them which I don't really want to do! But I also don't imagine that an 8 week old puppy is going to cope very well in the weather outside we are due to have this weekend! So don't know whether to keep puppy pads or completely take away!

Its all so Confused be so exciting!

PuppyMonkey · 07/12/2018 11:24

Ah yes for chewing related stuff, I’ve recently invested in something called Grannicks Bitter Apple chew deterrent spray. He HATES the taste and it’s now got to the stage where I only have to grab the bottle and he stops chewing the thing he was chewing and sits all “I’m a good boy.” Grin

BiteyShark · 07/12/2018 11:34

Margomini I didn't use puppy pads because I didn't want the possibility of any confusion. However, some people swear by them. As with everything you will always get differing opinions (as shown by DanielCraigsUnderpants on the crate Grin) so it is really down to your preference.

LittleLongDog · 07/12/2018 11:42

Margomini we’re picking up our mini dachs today too! Ours is male, what’s yours?

We aim to go down the no puppy pads route. (I have my chuck-on-wet-weather stuff ready by the back door 😂) But I do actually have some puppy pads in stock just in case it doesn’t work out and we need to change plans down the line.

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 07/12/2018 11:52

Puppy pads make the early days a bit less horrific in the short term if you don't want to keep getting up overnight to let them out. And having spent the last three weeks up at least three times a night that's appealing.
But then you face the ball ache of phasing them out. And having puppy pads to dispose of.

Margomini · 07/12/2018 12:11

Sorry I don't know how to add peoples names in! Completely new here! [grins]

I know I've been very adamant in my think of no puppy pads its only in the last few days I've been wavering my DP said last night well you wouldn't like it if someone made you go out in the cold/wet/windy garden for a no1/2 would you and she's just a baby....so now I am crumbling already! Xmas Grin

Littlelongdog ours is a little dapple girl brown and tan...how about yours!? I have wanted one for so long and so happy that we are now in a comfortable position where its sensible...my DP didn't grow up with any animals and I think is a bit nervous and overwhelmed by the thought of having this tiny things to care for and look after but I know it will absolutely adore her Smile

We will just go with the flow I guess and what feels right...our breeder has put together a big pack of goodies etc for each pup including puppy pads so will have some in an emergency!

ChestyNut · 07/12/2018 13:34

Little and margot awaiting photos Grin

Think I might need some of that bite deterrent spray for the sofa edges Angry

Margo were puppy padding on a night as 2 hourly get ups is not for me! We’re toileting outside on a day though and dare I say it, doing ok!

Daniel she’s spend all day in time out at the minute Grin

I really can't recommend the FB group Dog Training Advice and Support highly enough for owners of puppies, or dogs of any age for that matter. It's run by professionals who advocate the use of modern, science based and force free training techniques.

They've got an excellent collection of guides/articles specifically for new puppy owners: Congratulations on Your New Puppy, and it's also worth searching through the group posts if there's anything specific you want more clarification on. Chances are someone will have already asked and there'll lots of extra advice in the responses.

LittleLongDog · 07/12/2018 14:35

Thanks for the link Whoseranium. I’m not on fb but DP is so I might check that out.

Can’t wait to see a pic Margomini, that colouring sounds gorgeous. Ours is a funny chap, started off very dark brown (almost black) and tan but the brown is coming through more and more every time we see him. All his litter mates looked very classic and neat: Black and Tan, like perfect puppies in an advert. Ours is the odd one (but obviously the best 😂).

Not long now. Currently taking my time doing my last big food shop before I’m inside with the pup for the foreseeable future.

Margomini · 07/12/2018 15:25

Thanks guys!

Chesynut - we have bought some of that bitter apple spray in advance and I went round spraying wooden furniture last night so we will see if it helps! Was quite cheap on Amazon.

Whoseranium - thanks for that, I joined that group a while ago and have been looking through all there info...it is really really useful!

Littlelongdog - awww he sounds adorable! I know you said you aren't on FB but there are also some really good dachshund specific groups on there...I don't know where about you are in the county but Inve joined North West Dachshund group and there is loads of great breed specific advice....it might be worth a look!

Oh very jealous! I was in Tesco at 8 am before work doing my last bits Grin just whiling away the hours at work! SO long!

ChestyNut · 07/12/2018 15:28

Batshit he is adorable 😍
