Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

little no way can I face two hourly get ups so rightly or wrongly were using pads on a night. We did with previous dog.

Bitey and Wolfie did you close the door on crate? I haven’t so far as want her to see it as a positive space but I’m fast thinking a break would be nice.
I have too wished for the magicingpuppyawayfairy a few times this week.

I so miss ChestyDog in photo Sad

Yes I closed the crate door. However, the crate was an XXL for a spaniel (the largest I could find on the internet) so it was more like a big play pen which maybe didn't make him feel like he was closed in.

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 19:53

Bitey ours is a huge one too as was ChestyDogs. We have a light blanket over on a night, should I try her in it with door shut and blanket off in a day time?

I feel your pain chesty, we've had itdoesntcuddle dog for a week now and some days shes wonderful, then the next she's a total horror and utterly relentless with it.
The biting is awful and so bloody difficult to ignore. I've read somewhere to treat when they lick or gently nibble instead of biting, we've done that today and it seems to have helped, will gradually phase it out to no biting at all.

We've already had our first trip to the out of hours vet with a cat scratch to the eye. Hoping she's learnt her lesson that cats are bad ass and not to be messed with Grin

I never covered the crate but I did have a soft igloo bed in part of it so he could huddle down in his cave if he wanted but outside of his bed was completely uncovered.

I think it's just about finding what your puppy prefers.

Vallahalagonebutnotforgotten · 06/12/2018 20:01

Chesty try popping the puppy in the crate and close the door - dont lock it.

Feed the puppy the whole time he is in the crate with the door shut to start with. I would try and feed a whole meal like this.

Just open the door after a while gradually build up the time the puppy is happy in the crate with the door pushed to.

I've found my group! We have a 10 week old retriever/labrador cross and frequently find myself standing in the garden in pjs and wellies waiting for him to perform!!! He's turned into baby shark so I'd love to know if anyone has had success in stopping the biting (I do try and distract him with toys). He hated the crate so I've bought a large dog play pen which has space for a bed and area with newspaper (puppy pads get shredded). He's happy there. Puppy classes start next week - hoping we not the ones on the proverbial naughty step!!!

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 06/12/2018 21:09

Chesty. This is my old girl that I said goodbye to back in October.

Puppies are incredibly wearing. You can't switch off for a second unless you know where they're sleeping. It will get better.

It's ideal if you can start your recall training ASAP. Mine has been off lead since day one and he follows me because I'm all he knows. Happy to give any training advice if anyone wants any.

Oh Chesty and Daniel they are stunning pics.
I am a complete newbie. First pup. She couldn’t stand to be away from me. I slept by the closed crate and gradually withdrew over three weeks. Was bloody knackering but she’s now happy enough in the pen all night.
And I’m sitting here remembering how awful it was and still wanting another pup. Confused

ChestyNut · 06/12/2018 22:45

Wolfie another pup? NEVER AGAIN!

Daniel the incessant biting is driving me crazy especially when she bites my leg as I walk.....any tips? Not sure wether I should stand still and endure the pain, shove a toy in her gob or shout at her ( know that’s not the correct option)

boiling we want to start puppy classes but vet said vaccine at8 weeks, 1 weeks and then a week later they can go out? So Boxing Day for us Sad

Valla will try, think I’ll get her a long to stuff and try her in the cage with that.
She does get in herself especially when I want to take her out for a wee!

Major wobble this morning, he woke up at 4.44 thinking it was morning, been sleeping on the sofa till the kids got up at six, we’ve all got stinking colds and the tiredness has got to us all. My husband is in a foul mood and says he’s had enough (we all know men can’t cope with sleep deprivation 😂)

It’s awful but a bit of my just wants life to go back to normal 😢😢

Sarahmoore0510 · 07/12/2018 06:57

...oh also the yapping...all of a sudden he’s found his voice!! 5am not my favourite noise 😭

Wolfiefan · 07/12/2018 08:04

It’s not awful. It’s puppy regret. It’s real.
And yes another. I must need my head read. Grin

Sarahmoore0510 · 07/12/2018 08:46

I just want to skip to the part when it’s easy!!! Being housebound doesn’t help, be better when we can go for walks!

ChestyNut · 07/12/2018 08:58

I feel your pain Sarah Shock

Is anyone else having the biting your legs as you walk problem? How are you stoping it?

OP posts:
ChestyNut · 07/12/2018 09:00

Last nights post was meant to say vaccine at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and then allowed out a week later Sad

Not that we’ll ever be able to walk, she hates the lead!

OP posts:
Sarahmoore0510 · 07/12/2018 09:03

Yes ChestyNut, I’ve been standing totally still when he does it (be a lamppost as i say to the kids) it has got better!

LittleLongDog · 07/12/2018 09:03

Chesty bitting your legs while you walk sounds like it would definitely drive anyone mad! At least when it’s when you’re initiating play/training you expect it to be nibbled. Could you try the classic yelping and ignoring?

ChestyNut · 07/12/2018 09:04

I’m trying the lamppost and yelp but those shark teeth hurt Sad

OP posts:
LittleLongDog · 07/12/2018 09:07

When can you take your little cavapoo out Sarah? Are you going for a harness or a collar?

It’s really hammering down here today. Are we all mad to get pups just as Winter kicks in?

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 07/12/2018 09:10

The best thing with the biting is to stop walking. Tell puppy a firm no. I gently take the collar when I do that (no force. Just holding it so they see me say no firmly) then distract with a tight toy.

They're teething. And they're excitable. It's a rotten mix

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 07/12/2018 09:11

I've never found the yelping thing to work much more than once and that's because of the surprise factor. I find the high pitch noise tends to just hype them up more. Different approaches for different dogs though

LittleLongDog · 07/12/2018 09:13

How about some leg armour Chesty? Grin

Puppy support
ChestyNut · 07/12/2018 09:27

Is today the day Little?
Leg armour would be fabulous!

Daniel I will try that today.

it’s mad half hour time again.

Chocolatebourbons · 07/12/2018 09:34

It does get better. I totally sympathetic and get you OP.
Our pup is our first one and up until around 8 months of age she was a bitey excitable monster, I especially had major puppy regret/depression but at nearly a year old she is now becoming very settled, chilled and placid. Even miss her when she goes to daycare. ❤
Would I do it again? Probably Smile
