New Border Collie Puppy - Much excitement and need name!

Finally, after a long long wait, we are getting a dog and I am beyond excitement.

It is a little Border Collie boy and I am totally in love. We get him in January.

But I need a name. We met his Mum and Dad (and Granny) and all were gorgeous - Dad is big and fluffy and really laid back. So I'm imagining our wee boy is going to turn into quite a big thing.

Here are the maybe names so far (please don't laugh)

Ivor
Roo
Magnus
Moss
Bo
Wookie
Pixel

Any other suggestions welcomed.

(As this is a very outing list - I have been running some ideas by my friends/colleagues - I have name changed)

I like Breck or Bracken out of those already suggested.

Or what about Max?

DogDaysAreRover · 28/11/2018 22:27

They’re such clever dogs with an innate sense of dignity

Yes - this 100%. It has to be a dignified name.

That said, his Dad was Loot and his grandad was Swag which I think are great names!

Max is good but DS best friend is Max.

No idea on names but wondering if they have any little girls left ...

We are getting a sister (or maybe he'll think girlfriend) for our border collie boy.
My only advice is to remember you will be calling the name across the park, pick something you won't be embarrassed about!

OnlyToWin · 28/11/2018 22:31

What about Guy? I am presuming her was born around the start of Nov!!

Blobbyweeble · 28/11/2018 22:31

Idiot dog is Milo. I’m sure he’ll grow into it some time. Although having tipped a scalding hot cup of tea all over me today he’s lucky to be alive. His big brother Finn was disgusted at such naughtiness.Grin

OnlyToWin · 28/11/2018 22:31

He was born I mean.

DogDaysAreRover · 28/11/2018 22:33

@anniehm yes! There was one little girl and we were absolutely torn about which to choose. This is the little girl - she was just adorable. A real character.

My collie chose her own name. On the day we brought her home from her foster carer's house we decided to call her Skye. We got her home and took her out in the garden and repeated said "Skye" and she point blank ignored us. My daughter, who had been at work when we collected her, said "I think she looks like a Mollie!" and the little ratbag ran straight over and sat at her feet so Mollie the Collie she became (and as you can see, Mollie and my daughter are incredibly close. DD taught her 'Cuddle?', if she wants a cuddle you hold out your arms and she puts her front paws over one arm and scoops up her back legs for a cuddle). She is often called Moobag because she is an utter cowbag at times.

I love nature names for collies

Breac is great - solid and serious but with a lovely sound to it.

Magnus is good too. Murdo? Briar?

DogDaysAreRover · 28/11/2018 22:39

Molly's gorgeous too! What a fabulous photo of her on the wood.

We know an Ollie the Collie!

Glen is great for your Scottish connection. Or what about:

Fife ?

DogDaysAreRover · 28/11/2018 22:42

Glen vetoed.

I’m from west coast so Fife not acceptable!!

(Sorry but thank you!)

Arthur?
One he’ll grow into!! Smile

tabulahrasa · 28/11/2018 22:48

“I see Roo has no votes - at the risk of sounding pretentious, it is meant to be Ruadh which is Scottish Gaelic for red”

It’s not pronounced like that though, but for what it’s worth I quite like Ruadh.

Breac is nice too, though I do have a Brock, so that might be colouring my opinion, lol

He should be Cuilean though... all collie puppies should be Cuilean, rofl

ChinkChink · 28/11/2018 22:50

Ah, then you must veto Angus too.

Troon

DogDaysAreRover · 28/11/2018 22:50

I’ll auggest Arthur in the morning and see how it goes down. Thank you :-)

Good luck! Smile
This will be the one year your children are hoping Christmas goes quickly! Grin

RainbowHash · 28/11/2018 22:54

Magnus seems right to me! I'm jealous... would love a dog, border collie being a favourite breed, but timing not right just now. Exited and happy for you x

DogDaysAreRover · 28/11/2018 22:55

@tabulahrasa ooh how is it pronounced? I am not a Gaelic speak at all (so feel even more pretentious) but I always though it was pronounced that way because of a house that had Ruadh that was pronounced that way - so I’m copying someone else’s error!)

Is Cuilean pronounced “Coolin” as if so my granny had a dog called that (cairn terrier)

Angus not vetoed as I think more of name that place. (I’m fickle)

DogDaysAreRover · 28/11/2018 22:57

Massive thank you to everyone who has responded. I really do appreciate each and every one who has responded. I have wanted a dog ever since I left home and my childhood dogs. But lifestyle meant I couldn’t up until now. I NEED a dog in my life - they are such wonderful creatures.

Thank you.

That’s lovely! A dream come true!
I love my dog - hard work in the puppy days, but an absolute joy now.

tabulahrasa · 28/11/2018 23:03

Ruadh would usually be Roo-a or Roo-oy depending on your accent, which is how you get Roy from it like in rob Roy.

“Is Cuilean pronounced “Coolin” as if so my granny had a dog called that (cairn terrier)“

Yep, means puppy, it’s imaginative like Grin lol

DogDaysAreRover · 28/11/2018 23:12

I always thought that “coolin” was names after the mountains of Skye as my Granny’s other dog was called Rona which is an Island off Skye. (I also think she spelt it Cuilin which is think is how you spell the mountains?)

But I digress....
