And have the lull the winds have picked up again here Sad

Mrsoh39 · 09/02/2019 14:26

Dh is having puppy regret I think, but she will get better, once we can get out with her I'm hoping it will help her.

Lucky you were there bitey.

BiteyShark · 09/02/2019 14:44

Both DH and I had the wtf have we done for many months. DH more than me and now he's the most protective of the two of us when it comes to BiteyDog. Give your DH some Brew and Cake and to hang in there Grin

I have started to take two leads on walks now. A clip one and a slip lead. I was going to loop the slip lead over the runaway dog but couldn't get close enough but eventually when her owner was in sight I managed to grab her collar until she got closer. BiteyDog in his teenage phase used to chase deer so I have been in that exact position, repeatedly blowing the whistle and praying to see them running back to you. This dog though must have done a massive circle to have ended up where we found her having seen her running in a completely different direction earlier.

Mrsoh39 · 09/02/2019 14:54

I'm going to try some clicker training with her with regards to the nipping and biting when I get home from work, and hope it works.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 09/02/2019 20:43

Puppy regret is totally normal.

DH is away and BastardPup is missing him. He has had a couple of proper barking fits at me. Trying to work out how early I can go to bed and still be safe from very early waking

fleshmarketclose · 10/02/2019 08:36

Oh yes puppy regret is something that should be mentioned in every book, magazine and website. Two weeks in I cried thinking what a terrible mistake I had made and I had blips throughout Eric's first year (awful as an adolescent dog as well) but he is lovely now and I'm glad we persevered, although I will never ever as long as I live have another puppy Grin Bella has been an absolute dream in comparison so it will be rescues all the way.

BiteyShark · 10/02/2019 14:46

I will never ever as long as I live have another puppy

I won't say never but I would have to have a complete memory blank to contemplate the puppy time again. Maybe when I am retired I might think differently but then I am not sure I would have the energy to do it again. I look back on those times and shudder Grin

steppemum · 10/02/2019 15:11

the more I hear about puppies, the gladder I am that we found steppedog as an adult

just completely ignores the issue of training an adult dog with a blooming food fixation

(is gladder even a word???)

fleshmarketclose · 10/02/2019 16:19

I love looking at the photos on here of the pups, I go all misty eyed and then I remember the maggot ridden half pigeon that he wouldn't drop for every treat I had in the house and I cried. The time he rolled in fox poo and then gravel and was a stinking pebble dashed mess for the mile walk home. The times he nipped, the constant desire to get at anything he shouldn't have, the times he was a git and ignored me calling him back. No chance, four months of Bella getting up at the crack of dawn was a doddle in comparison. Now I get up when I'm ready, she opens one eye and goes back to sleep until half eight absolute bliss Grin

BiteyShark · 10/02/2019 16:46

Oh flesh that sounds grim.

For me the worst was the teenager from hell. A strong hunting spaniel sticking two fingers up at me for recall was the worst. I actually contemplated paying someone to walk him every day for me as I couldn't take the stress. Ironic now as he doesn't leave my side, ignores deers and rabbits and looks a perfect dog around others with poor recall but I remember when it was completely the opposite. The worst was when he spotted a deer and legged it and it was the longest 10-15 minutes of my life blowing the whistle and hoping to see his furry face again. I was just at the point of phoning DH to say I have lost our dog when he came running back looking very scared as he had clearly struggled to find his way back to me.

steppemum · 11/02/2019 10:36

Feeling smug, just got in from a lovely walk.

Just let me enjoy feeling smug for 24 hours, because it won't last, but just NOW for TODAY, I have a beautifully well behaved dog, that can walk angelically on the lead, resonds to my every call, and looks unbelievably cute as he fetches the ball back to my feet every time with spaniel ears flapping, and tongue lolopping, like a perfect audition for Pet Dog of the Year.

BiteyShark · 11/02/2019 11:12

I would be watching steppedog very closely. What is he trying to cover up with his good behaviour Grin

steppemum · 11/02/2019 11:20

Oi - don't spoil my illusion!

Grin
steppemum · 11/02/2019 11:21

(There may have been a small incident with the compost bin overnight, apparently he loves brocolli stalks - who knew?!)

BiteyShark · 11/02/2019 11:23

Ha he's letting you know about the broccoli as a diversion tactic Wink

BiteyShark · 11/02/2019 16:37

BiteyDog was holding his paw up a bit yesterday but he does that when anticipating you throwing something for him. However, just picked him up from daycare and he is really limping Sad.

Checked his paws as much as I can but he doesn't like me doing it so haven't been able to get a good look. I thought about doing a wait and see but honestly I would just stress myself watching him and then pestering him so booked us into the vets for later. Spent so much money there that I feel a consolation is a small drop in the ocean especially if they spot anything obvious that I haven't.

Mrsoh39 · 11/02/2019 17:34

Mrs dog has not been too bad, have done lots of fetch with her, she's doing paw before we even ask her, still nipping and grabbing clothes but part and parcel of her being a puppy.

Recall is the one thing I'm worrying about, so have being doing lots of walking with her in the garden next to me, telling her to sit etc.

Oh no Biteyshark hope it's nothing too serious.

Steppe dog is up to something Grin

Mrsoh39 · 11/02/2019 17:34

Been not being Blush

BiteyShark · 11/02/2019 19:36

Fuck!

He misjudged a jump in the forest at daycare and was winded but walker said other than that he was fine. However, looks like when he finally rested some swelling must have happened.

Vet (ponders if any of them are on here -waves) said he is showing neurological signs down one side of his body and doesn't want his neck manipulating fully. I had been so busy looking at his front legs to see which one it was I didn't notice him hopping at the back. As he is mobile he has come home and either he deteriorates overnight in which case emergency vets or if the same tomorrow morning possible referral to neurological center for scans. Trying to remain optimistic that it's swelling and will go down but with our luck I am thinking the worst Sad

BiteyShark · 11/02/2019 19:43

And I would really kill for a glass of wine right now but can't in case we need to rush him back in the night.

steppemum · 11/02/2019 21:37

when we puppy sat my friend's puppy (totally soft and adorable labrador) she was 5 months old and we had her for a few days, and my friend's dh taught our kids how to do some training with her.

so, one child at bottom of garden and one at top, the kid at the other end starts to call puppydog, come here, come on, good girl etc. Puppy races down garden to lots of fuss and attention, then the child at the other end repeats. So she was learning that when her name is called she gets loads of fuss.

When she was older we did it out and about, same thing, two people a distance apart. It worked like a dream.

We started off with steppedog that way too, when we first let him off the lead, so he would come when we called. Mind you for steppedog is took a little longer must be because he is an adult, and nothing to do with him being a stubborn git

steppemum · 11/02/2019 22:01

bloody hell bitey, just seen your post. Sad

goog job you took him to the vet

BiteyShark · 11/02/2019 22:24

goog job you took him to the vet

I know Sad. Half expected to be a bit embarrassed at rushing him straight there for a limp rather than waiting to see how he improved so really wasn't expecting to be told that at all.

Camped out on the floor with him and he seems relatively ok despite everything. He even rolled over for a belly stroke earlier so I am praying it's just internal bruising and swelling not anything more permanent.

BiteyShark · 11/02/2019 22:43

Athough he has just got up for a pee and he is limping just as bad. It's so pronounced his whole body drops when he uses his bad side.

BiteyShark · 12/02/2019 05:35

Well the good news is that he is no worse but the bad news is that he is exactly the same. Vet said they would try and refer him to a neuro specialist center today if no better. Never realised we had one so close but apparently we do as looked them up on google last night when I obviously couldn't sleep.
