Maltipoo Puppy Breeder Recommendations - UK

Hi, I have a friend looking for a Maltipoo breeder in the UK - prepared to travel for the right puppy & must be able to see it with Mum.

Struggling to find a reputable breeder.

OP posts:

I was one of the ‘idiots’, but what bugs me is I thought I was being sensible. My cavapoo was KC registered, health checked, mum was with the puppies. I had researched both breeds. I had read about how great cavapoos were. The media is full of dog recommendations normalising these designer crosses. It was only afterwards people like wolfiefan were posting about the realities of getting these dogs. Best dog in the world, but I guess I have to take the ‘idiot’ label. The worst of it was I found him on preloved. I hold my hands up with self loathing!

My DP's Godmother spend over 1k on a labradoodle. I find it ridiculous but people keep paying those prices so people breeding crosses will keep charging that much.

BiteyShark · 03/06/2018 17:12

I meant that only going to breeders who don't advertise and supposedly only breed to continue the show lines does not mean that's 'the only way to get the best puppy'. It's the ideal you and some others adhere to. Nothing wrong with that. BUT that doesn't mean that every single breeder that maybe advertises, or maybe doesn't breed to progress show lines churns out poor unhealthy dogs and certainly doesn't mean they keep their dogs in appalling conditions like a puppy farm.

I am also not surprised that I was asked by PP whether I advocate puppy farms and abuse just because I don't agree with that ideal. It's one of the reasons why I kick myself each time for commenting on threads like this because it's clear if you don't agree then you are some evil dog hating puppy farm advocate. And for that reason I will remind myself why posting is a bad idea and go play with my dog.

Your Cavapoo was KC registered? Confused

In answer to an above poster, reputable breeders will have a litter to continue a generation, to improve the breed by trying to outbreed specific issues and to produce working dogs depending on what the breed is. Sometimes they have puppies left, sometimes they don't. They usually have waiting lists and never advertise.

If you see someone advertising puppies, they are not a reputable breeder.

Yes he was! What I’m saying is people try their best and don’t necessarily know what they are buying is unethical if boxes seem to be ticked. I wouldn’t do it again now that I know. And I feel a right dickhead.

Wolfiefan · 03/06/2018 17:46

No way can a Cavapoo possibly be KC reg. maybe parents were but KC don't register cross breeds at all. If you have papers they're fake. Shock
Bitey if you're not still playing (I can't mine is sleeping!) then I wouldn't get a home bred dog. If I wanted a non show line I would go to working homes. Not a home bred dog if that makes sense. I do love working labs but don't have that much energy!! Grin

ICantCopeAnymore · 03/06/2018 17:47

He really wasn't 😂

SpanielsAreNuts · 03/06/2018 18:05

Bitey the only reason I questioned about puppy farms was because of the ridiculous statement " After all if it is was wrong it would be illegal and mrs Jones would be facing prosecution. " - puppy farms are just as legal as Mrs Jones and just like Mrs Jones won't face prosecution for what is, morally speaking, wrong.

Just because Mrs Jones with no knowledge breeding isn't illegal doesn't mean it isn't wrong (you stated it couldn't be wrong since it wasn't illegal) - exactly like puppy farms are wrong but not illegal.

And that is not a personal attack it is setting the record straight so that someone doesn't think that because an industrial scale puppy farm is licensed and thus legal that it is therefore ok to buy from them. They are still wrong.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 03/06/2018 18:10

@Sharp when PP talk about KC reg they're talking about the breed register, not the activity register. Any dog can be on that register - even my mutt, and I don't have a clue where he was originally bred (and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a puppy farm or BYB - he's a rescue with a murky past). The activity register means absolutely nothing in terms of good breeding practice.

"If you and your dog love fun activities, such as Agility, Canicross, Flyball, Heelwork to Music or Obedience and your dog is not registered on the Breed Register, then the Activity Register is just what you need. This registration will allow you to enter Kennel Club licensed events for all the activities listed here."

Sharpcattlegridheavyhat · 03/06/2018 18:15

avocados thank you for clarifying! It was my first dog, I never had that explained and it illustrates my point about people’s intentions. Thank you for not just laughing at me and making me feel stupid.

“Best dog in the world, but I guess I have to take the ‘idiot’ label. The worst of it was I found him on preloved. I hold my hands up with self loathing”

See, I don’t think people are idiots and I don’t think they should feel self loathing, I would hope though that people who realised their dog maybe wasn’t from the best source would take that into consideration the next time, or if they know someone else is looking for a puppy.

SpanielsAreNuts · 03/06/2018 18:18

I hadn't realised tiny pups could be registered on the activity register - good tactic for making a designer cross seem more legit though (even though parentage doesn't make a difference to the dog being registerable).

Can I ask, purely out of intrigue, if parentage is known, do they put it on the paperwork you get for the dog being on the activity register (like it is for pedigrees?) or is it just registration details of that particular dog?

As avacado says though when people say KC registered, automatic thought is usually breed register.

ICantCopeAnymore · 03/06/2018 18:20

Yeah, the KC activity register isn't KC Registration. Any Heinz 57 can be registered on that. It's completely different.

Wolfiefan · 03/06/2018 18:20

I didn't know about the activity register. Had to have a Google!! Learnt about Rally today. Looked amazing.

ICantCopeAnymore · 03/06/2018 19:18

Rally is fab!

Tina60 · 09/01/2019 20:36

Every dog is a cross breed of some kind. They all started as wolves! Who says any cross isn’t a breed, only kennel club 🙄

Probably get shot down as a idiot but we have a toodle and I did everything I could to make sure he was not a puppy farm, yes I saw the advert on gumtree but I also visited 6 other breeders and was not happy with their explanations or seeing the interaction between bitch and puppies. The breeder I chose I asked her why she had bred her Tibetan terrier, she was keeping a puppy herself and wanted one from her dog and had homes lined up for the others (except this one a larger then expected litter), the bitch was 2.5 and was 1st Litter (she has since spayed her) I checked with neighbours I know in the area and she has lived there for 5+ years and not had puppies before. I saw mum and poodle dad and have copies of their health certificates, she also prepaid for all the puppies initial vaccinations at our local vets (all 3 rounds of needles) and we have a what’s app group with all the litter and meet regularly at the beach as a “family” so yes she was a home breeder and prob did it a bit for money but I did everything I could think of to make sure not a puppy farm. I did try to adopt / rescue first but we have a 4year old and we work, we use a very good day care but that was not good enough. We also adopted a greyhound 1st as they were only ones who would consider us but it went for my youngest and had to go back - now terrified of greyhounds so went for cute and fluffy. Sorry for essay but was trying to say not every cross is from a puppy farm and not everyone is allowed to rescue.
