He is feeling a bit better today, thanks. The additional painkillers seem to have helped and he's definitely perkier - no screaming or yelping today which is a relief

blueskyinmarch · 16/04/2018 20:15

We are two weeks in from Blueskydogs op and she is coping remarkably well with the lack of walks. She seems to have accepted that we are not walking and likes just lying in the garden. I am actually very impressed with her. I thought it was going to be a nightmare.

BiteyShark · 16/04/2018 23:14

Glad teatimetoller is feeling better but such a shame about the setback Sad

bluesky I have always been amazed at how BiteyDog accepted no walks. He used to get a bit fed up after a few weeks but typically he used to just accept the lazy days.

Does anyone else’s dog seem to regress behaviourally after being ill? Dpup had conjunctivitis followed by a tummy bug which seems to be on the mend now but his behaviour has gone totally downhill. He is constantly barking at everything, pulling on the lead and basically ignoring everything I say and do. It’s really getting me down as I had just started to feel like we were doing well (the post tummy bug tiredness is probably adding to my stress) and I’m hoping it’s maybe a temporary setback after being ill?

BiteyShark · 17/04/2018 23:16

Training has always been set back after BiteyDogs many illnesses. I think for us it was because of having to limit exercise during his illnesses that made him more excited when we finally did resume walks. Things like pulling on the lead always regressed for a week or so, especially if I didn't get back to correcting it straight away.

Wolfiefan · 17/04/2018 23:32

For us it takes so much time and energy when she's ill (and we may miss training) that I don't reinforce expectations. Soon get back to normal though. Until the next time. Hmm

GooodMythicalMorning · 18/04/2018 10:33

Yes definitely. He was such a bigger to walk after he was castrated. Constantly either pulling too hard or lying down.

BiteyShark · 18/04/2018 14:42

I wonder whether it's hot enough yet to crack open the doggy paddling pool Grin

GooodMythicalMorning · 18/04/2018 14:43

It is here! Indy had to come in as it was just too hot.

BiteyShark · 18/04/2018 14:46

I have just ordered a dog sun bed, the mesh ones that are raised off the floor. Hoping BiteyDog likes it as he keeps trying to steal my sun chair when I get up Angry

Abhorsen · 18/04/2018 15:28

Thank you everyone. That’s a bit reassuring as I was really feeling down about it all. Hopefully we’ll be back on track by the weekend!

It’s not that hot here today which I’m glad about as not convinced dpup likes the heat!!

BiteyShark · 19/04/2018 08:34

I have no idea what got into BiteyDog last night. Can't have been the heat as we cooled the bedroom down but he was up and down all night clip clopping about. And now he is happily fast asleep whilst I am shattered trying to work Angry.

I plan to poke him continuously to keep him awake Grin

Steppedog is totally hyper with the nice weather.

He is funny though, yesterday I let the rabbit out for a few hours in the morning. Steppedog spent the whole time with his nose to the french wondows whining. I took him out twice on a lead for a wee, and he wouldn't wee, his head was too full of RABBIT, RABBIT, RABBIT etc.
so from 6 am to 11:30, no wee!

Put rabbit away and propped the back door open and he just want nuts, up and down and up and down.
Racing to the end of the garden to the chicken pen (just to check if any have come out) bakc to the kitchen, and on and on, and on.

For TWO SOLID HOURS.
Then I took him out for a walk, and he was exhausted and panting before we even went!

steppemum · 19/04/2018 10:28

was cross today.
Out with steppedog this morning (boiling hot at 8:30 am!!!)
He was off lead and a large lab approahed us off lead. She was huge, big dog anyway, but alos pretty overweight.

steppedog and lab met and said hello, and lab then bounded over. Owner shouted to her, but she didn't take any notice (now I have sympathy with that as steppedog's recall isn't great is rubbish )

Dog bounds over to me and jumps up, I moved back so she missed, and she jumped and bounced again and again. By now the owner was right by me, then lab jumped up and planted wet muddy paws slap bang in the middle of my clean T shirt.

From the first recall shout this ower had said NOTHING to the dog, didn't call her, distract her, try to grab her, say sorry to me, just let this huge dog slam into me. Steppedog stood to one side looking bemused!

A simple apology would have helped!

BiteyShark · 19/04/2018 10:35

That's awful, apologies cost nothing Angry

Hi, may I ask for advice from you experienced guys pls...

Following on from steppermum’s incident, similar incident here this morning. Mine was on long lead, 2 dogs off lead with owners chatting away. One of their jack russell’s bounds up to mine, then within seconds it all turns nasty with mine fighting and crying to get it off. Owner oblivious, until i shouted a loud OFF.

Owner comes over, grabs her dog saying ‘it’s just play, seems aggressive but you will just have to get used to it, it in future, don’t ever shout at my dog again’ and I walk off with a wimpering pup, pretty pissed off. Pup refused to continue walking, just cried looking for reassurance from me.

My question is, do I get her back on the horse, so to speak with a familiar park later or go slow. She wouldn’t put her lead on again to even get out the car and is clearly out of sorts. She goes to doggie care 3 x week and is normally really sociable. My husband says this may be a good thing as she’s actually over trusting (we always wait and ask owner’s permission if she approaches).

18 weeks old...thanks for any steer on handling. I know this is usual, but slightly anxious of those stories with one bad experience resulting in regression as she was doing so well overall.

steppemum · 19/04/2018 11:02

Sorry, I know nothing about what to do now, but if an off lead dog approaches your on-lead dog, feel free to shout loudly to the other owner - Please don't let your dog approach a dog on lead!
You were in the right here, as it is very bad doggy manners, and the other woman was in the wrong. Feel free to shout at her dog when it is out of control!

BiteyShark · 19/04/2018 11:04

First the other owner was out of line. I don't agree that it's something you should just get used to although some people seem to think it's fine for their dogs to 'bother' other dogs. I wonder if they would like it if I went up to them and started to shout, jump on them and push them about Angry.

I tend to avoid those areas which seem to attract those dog owners now as my dog is very submissive and I don't want him hurt. My dog also goes to daycare and plays with his pals so at least you know that your dog will interact with 'known' dogs.

I think you probably need to build up your dogs confidence again. Perhaps go for a walk very early in the morning at a place where you know the chance of running into other dogs is small. Do you know anyone with a friendly dog that you could meet up with to get her confidence back up?

Thank you guys, really helpful. I live in an area blessed with many parks, but learning fast that they all have their own personalities!

The pup is getting much better on general etiquette, walking past without thinking it’s all about ‘her’, and I am educating the family on rules too, though they get much more incoming attention, I guess because she is still a puppy. I clearly go out with a different ‘face’ albeit unconsciously! I guess it’s because I bear the lion share pressure of raising this pup as well as I can for the family’s benefit.

Thank you. Having had her from 9 weeks old training through some pretty crappy weather, I was feeling low earlier that we get some decent, but I have to watch carefully how we progress...

ealingwestmum · 19/04/2018 11:49

...and need to find some dog friends to walk with Smile

noitsnotteatimeyet · 19/04/2018 20:34

Teatimetoller had three unprovoked attacks during his puppyhood, two of which drew blood but none was serious, thankfully. I suspect he would have been a wuss without the attacks as he’s a very gentle soul, but it does mean he’s polite but aloof when meeting strange dogs - I never have to worry about him bounding up to an on-lead dog. For a while he was scared of black dogs (all three dogs, bizarrely, were black - a patterdale, spaniel and German shepherd) but gradually that’s faded.

The good news here is that the neurologist isn’t worried by his relapse - he’s moving really well now he’s back on painkillers and his nerve pain responses are better than at either of his two previous appointments so we just need to keep him on metacam and gabapentin plus another month of antibiotics once we finish the current course and no running, jumping or playing with other dogs but he is allowed to swim - hurrah

GooodMythicalMorning · 19/04/2018 20:38

Oh that's good news Smile

Wolfiefan · 19/04/2018 21:58

Good news teatime.
Woah. No off lead dogs should be allowed to run up to and jump all over an on lead dog. She was an arsehat. Whether it's "play" or not doesn't matter. Why should your dog be subjected to aggressive behaviour with no means of escape.
Basic manners. Dog on lead? Keep yours close or leash it if it's not reliable.

BiteyShark · 19/04/2018 22:01

noitsnotteatimeyet that's good news. Do you have a lot of places where teatimetoller can swim?

Squirrel26 · 20/04/2018 07:49

SquirrelDog is firmly on British Summer Time now - up at 5.30 this morning. He’s now amusing himself by bringing items of my clothing downstairs one at a time. He’s got a 1-1 obedience lesson this afternoon, that’ll reduce his energy levels, I hope.

If an off lead dog comes and harasses your on lead dog, you’re absolutely entitled to shout at it, as far as I’m concerned. It’s not fair to the dog who can’t choose to get away.
