Oh no Sad nail things are so painful!

I have occasionally picked up the wrong poo, and only noticed because it was cold! Yuk.

Pradaqueen · 11/04/2018 12:47

Thank you for the kind wishes. He’s broken the claw below the quick so had to have some of the bone amputated poor thing. He’s back home now but very groggy from the sedation.

BiteyShark · 11/04/2018 12:54

Ouch that sounds very painful Sad hope he feels better soon.

How do you knwo if a dog has a temperature?
Steppedog has been REALLY warm to the touch the last couple of days, even dd commented on it.
But nose wet and eyes bright and he ran roudn as usual on his walk.

BiteyShark · 11/04/2018 20:33

I think the only good way is to actually take their temperature but I have never been keen to stick a thermometer in his bottom Shock and I think the ear ones are not very accurate.

Steppemum, have you administered any worm or flea treatments in the last few days. I always notice cocodog a bit lethargic and off particularly after flea treatment. Am considering changing back to spot on for her.
Nail stuff, our last dog had a ripped dew claw, no real problem, then a grass seed embedded in nail...surgery.

steppemum · 11/04/2018 22:07

no treatments, no.
He seems fine, just odd that he is so warm.

not more worried about the dog than I ever am over my kids, Oh no not me

Squirrel26 · 11/04/2018 22:12

I took SquirrelDog to the emergency vet once, because he had a terrible wound that was near his EYE because he had a small scratch on his face. Vet said it really didn't need any treatment, but that the nurse could maybe wash it with water (I think he may have been humouring me...) Then for some reason he said he would take SquirrelDog's temperature. SquirrelDog looked a little surprised at this strange man approaching his bum with a plastic stick, and moved out of the way. 'Oh dear' said the vet. 'He doesn't like it. Maybe we won't bother.'

I'm not sure how much veterinary treatment he actually manages to carry out if he gives up every time an animal 'doesn't like it'...

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 12/04/2018 07:15

When cocodog was being treated for her stomach infection she was too busy fawning over the observing student vet assistant to notice the plastic stick. Eyes nearly popped out on stalks. A much more dignified dog walked out of the vets than the one who gambolled in expecting FUN!😁

BiteyShark · 12/04/2018 08:26

BiteyDog now tries to jump in my arms with his tail firmly clamped between his legs anytime the vet comes near Shock

I've been pondering this for a while. How much does your dog 'protect' his home. BiteyDog whilst being the most happy, submissive dog who thinks everyone loves him and he loves them back is very growly when he hears anything outside the house.

If someone reverses in our driveway he growls, if someone walks past the wall at the front of the house he growls and barks. Sometimes he is lying dozing on the sofa and you hear this deep belly growl as he had clearly heard something outside. I find it cute and DH and I have to stifle a laugh sometimes as we think he is telling us 'there are monsters' outside but wondering if he is excessively growly. We don't encourage it btw as we usually 'thank' him and tell him 'it's ok' and he is fine then.

GooodMythicalMorning · 12/04/2018 19:30

Indys the same. Any noise and he barks and growls at it. Fine with anything else but outside noise he alerts us.

BiteyShark · 12/04/2018 19:39

Glad it's not just BiteyDog Goood Grin

I do wonder if he's confused as to why we don't 'worry' that there are monsters close by as he sometimes looks quite perturbed.

OP posts:
Squirrel26 · 12/04/2018 20:40

SquirrelDog doesn't growl, but he spends ages standing at the window, then every so often he barks and squeaks and runs round in circles, and scrabbles frantically at the glass. Then he runs between the window, and the back door and the bedroom window upstairs. I've no idea what it is, I can never see anything when I look out.

GooodMythicalMorning · 12/04/2018 20:43

He seems worse if he's sat on me. Like he's more protective of me. At least I know if someone is coming to the door.

BiteyShark · 12/04/2018 23:28

Clearly SquirrelDog and GooodDog hear monsters as well Grin.

I really have to stifle a laugh though as he's such a small dog with a massive growl which sounds so out of place Grin Would definitely put off anyone breaking in.

bluetongue · 13/04/2018 11:42

Bluepuppy barks when someone is coming to the front door. It’s pretty much the only time he barks at home!

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 13/04/2018 14:07

I have never heard cocodog growl other than play wrestling with another young dog. She bounces barking and scrabbling from window to window if she spots a squirrel or a rabbit in her garden. She barks when a stranger walks up the drive but once she knows them doesn’t . Makes our postman’s life quite pleasant😁

YogaDrone · 13/04/2018 14:22

YogaDog rarely barks and when she does it's deep and booming and she surprises herself as much as us. She looks around as if to try and find the dog who just barked. Somewhere inside the scaredy-pup that is YogaDog is a confident assertive dog waiting to break out Grin

You made me laugh steppemum - all that roughage from steppedog's bread and cereal eating and then poo hunting Shock It's certainly a design flaw. I've taken to leaving ddog on the lead until after she has had a poo otherwise she runs off to do it and I can't find it again - argh. Although she does usually go under bushes or in the middle of a hedge if at all possible She likes to toilet privately!

YogaDog was weighed at the vets last week and is now a porky pup - almost 28kg (she's a small lab) so a 1.5kg weight gain since pre-op. Much of the weight gain is probably because of the restricted exercise of the past 3 months. Even though we reduced her kibble rations we had Xmas etc. and she is VERY good at begging Grin

I'm wary of letting her chase the ball much as I suspect the sudden stops and skidding to a halt were the cause of the cruciate rupture in the first place. At least the weather is now warmer so she is swimming again. She can walk for hours and not get tired but swimming actually seems to wear her out.

Indy is very handsome Goood A dog walking acquaintance has a female bulldog who has recently had puppies. I wangled myself an introduction to the new arrivals and oh goodness they are so gorgeous!

BiteyShark · 13/04/2018 15:15

As a puppy BiteyDog never made a sound (no growls or barks for anything). It was only when he reached adulthood did he find his voice Hmm

steppemum · 13/04/2018 15:29

steppedog didn't bark at all for the first 2 months we had him, then the odd bark at a suirrel teasing him from up in a tree.

When we had had him for about 4 months we niticed a subtle shift in his behaviour, he started to 'protect' our house a bit. But in a really nice way. So postie rang/knocked and i didn't hear, steppedog sat by front door and barked a few times until I started to come and answer.
new person at the door that he is unsure of and we get the odd warning bark.
It is really sweet actually, shows he now thingks of this as home. And surprising that it took 4 months for that to happen.

GooodMythicalMorning · 13/04/2018 15:40

Thanks yoga Smile

steppemum · 13/04/2018 21:41

Oh the guilt!

dd1 let steppedog out in the garden for a wee, I think about 8 pm. I then was cooking in kitchen, dd2 was chatting to be etc etc.

At around 9 pm, dd2 heard a noise outside and looked out of the back door, steppedog was standing on back doorstep with his head hung low.

I didn't know he was out and thought he was upstairs with ds. Steppedog is slinking around looking worried and nervous as if he is in disgrace. Cuddles and a treat is NOT doing it for him. Sad

BiteyShark · 14/04/2018 06:00

Awww poor steppeDog Grin. I left BiteyDog outside once by accident thinking he had gone inside and I could hear him barking but it took a few minutes for me to realise where it was coming from. He never barks to come in so I think he was angry Blush

blueskyinmarch · 14/04/2018 10:24

We left blueskydog out by mistake during the winter. By the time we realised she wasn't in the house, hours after we had let her out, we opened the back door to find her curled up in the dark, under a bush with a light coat of frost on her. She looked so sad. She is wearing the same sad face now due to her current lack of walks but at least it is milder so she is enjoying lying in the garden.
