General dog chat

Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

Hoping he's home really soon. Best if he's eating though. What is he allowed as a treat? Mine is phantom pregnancying again! A single sardine from a tin on her food seems to do the trick! Also heard rotisserie chicken is VERY popular. Anything they or you can try to ease the nausea? Poor boy. Sad

BiteyShark · 23/03/2018 10:49

He loves all his food at the moment so he must be feeling rough not to eat. We have lots of cod fillets in the freezer so I may cook one and take it in later if they let me as that's his go to food.

Poor Wolfiedog, is she all clingy again? You still thinking of spaying her when she's over 2 years?

Oh Bitey I’ve just caught up with your latest saga Sad

Healing vibes to poor little Bitey dog. Sounds like you got him in there just in time.

Not much update on Bluepuppy. Still planning on getting him a whippet friend but not in too much of a hurry. Thought I’d found a possible dog but now I’m not so sure. It’s the same age as Bluepuppy, a boy as well and as also almost the same colouring and marking. I’m not sure I want a Bluepuppy twin though. I know that sound ridiculous but it’s how I feel. It’s a three hour drive to see the dog with Bluepuppy so a whole day trip and I don’t want to waste the breeder’s time (before anyone asks why they still have him he was going to be a show dog but didn’t make the grade.)

BiteyShark · 23/03/2018 11:15

What did you have in mind for your second whippet blue? Did you want a girl or different colouring?

I am very glad BiteyDog is an 'only', don't think my sanity could cope with double the trouble of him Grin

I was originally after a girl Bitey but happy to consider a boy as well. Colour shouldn’t matter but it sort of does to me if I’m being honest. Then there’s the not so small matter of me being a bit skint at the moment and needing to pay off my credit card after my recent holiday.

Any new dog would get the best of care but if I’m being honest it’s not he ideal time for me right now unless the perfect dog became available.

Hope Biteydog is feeling better Flowers

blue when you use daycare the costs are high. Would you send both to daycare or if both keep each other company at home would you save some money that way?

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 23/03/2018 18:30

Hi bitey, how is biteydog doing? Have you been in to vets to coax him to eat and is he home yet.

BiteyShark · 23/03/2018 19:55

Only just home. He still isn't eating but he's so sad and depressed. Not even a waggy tail and for a happy spaniel that's not good. He normally wags it even if he feels unwell. I think he is majorly depressed.

They have sent him home tonight to see if it makes a difference in himself and then we go back with him tomorrow morning (or earlier if he takes a turn for the worse). He is curled up asleep showing no real interest in any food at the moment. I think it might take a long time for him to get over this Sad

bluetongue · 23/03/2018 20:22

I’m so sorry to hear Biteydog is still so unwell. You sound like such a wonderful owner and you’ve just been so unlucky with it all Sad

The idea of getting the second dog is that I won’t have to use daycare anymore apart from the odd day here or there and hopefully two dogs without daycare will be cheaper that one with. Obviously if I go on holiday costs will be higher but I usually only go on one, maybe two trips a year so it shouldn’t be too bad. Wouldn’t more money make all our lives easier Grin

steppemum · 23/03/2018 21:11

Oh bitey, just come bakc on and reading your updates is so sad.
Hope he does better at home with you tonight.

poor little biteydog.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 23/03/2018 22:00

Poor biteydog, with everything he has been through in the last few days am not surprised he is stressed. TLC and an approximation of his usual routine will help restore him soon, I hope. Sending healing thoughts and a tummy rub.

BiteyShark · 24/03/2018 04:29

I have never seen him so depressed. We have been up through the night for pees as the drip he was on had clearly loaded him up with water. Normally he will lie next to me when ill so he's touching me but he doesn't want to be close. I guess there are only so many times you can leave a dog in a horrible noisy scary place before it takes its toll mentally. I know he will get over that eventually but a non waggy spaniel is a very sad one Sad.

The good news though every trip to the garden resulted in him eating a tiny bit of food so at least we know he can and will eat so coming home was the right thing to do.

Going back to the vets this morning and will run through everything again on his drugs and recovery as it was hard to take it all in yesterday as we weren't really sure he was on the mend physically with the eating etc.

The wound looks quite far up so hoping the inflatable buster collar will be enough which he tolerates (there is a big sticky cover over the wound at the moment so can't actually see where the stitches are until the vet removes it today). Our poor boy has a shaved belly again so he looks very odd ( it took ages to grow back last time they did that for scans).

Going to be so happy when he eventually wags his tail for me.

blue not having daycare will save you a lot. I think daycare is great for BiteyDog as he gets to play with other dogs whereas our house is very quiet and he loves going there. Worth every penny but it does make dog ownership very very costly. I think I spend more on daycare per month alone than other owners spend on their dog for everything.

OP posts:
bluetongue · 24/03/2018 05:42

Daycare has been a lifesaver for Bitey me even if my bank balance is looking very sad at the moment because of it. If Bluepuppy hadn’t been suitable for daycare I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been able to keep him Sad Luckily he does well there. He still whines for me when I leave sometimes but apparently he is fine once I’m gone. If I’m being honest there are parts of my budget I can fine tune (like buying lunch most days Blush ) so my finances will recover. Rehoming a dog however is forever.

Sounds like small but positive steps for Biteydog Smile

TropicPlunder · 24/03/2018 07:00

Really sorry to hear about Biteydog. Hope he's on the mend very soon

BiteyShark · 24/03/2018 07:11

Thanks everyone for the good wishes. He really did give us a scare.

I now have a dog cuddled up to me so I think he has finally 'forgiven' me for leaving him. He is making THE worst smells ever so I am sat here trying to hold my breath whilst cuddling him Grin

noitsnotteatimeyet · 24/03/2018 07:12

That’s good news Bitey (well not about the smells Grin)

Squirrel26 · 24/03/2018 10:48

So pleased you have BiteyDog home Smile Tell him, no more ‘excitements’ please!

BiteyShark · 24/03/2018 11:15

We have just cancelled our holiday for next week. Was going to take him away in the uk but he won't be able run about or play ball and that is what we wanted to do so instead we will be resting at home.

Vet was pleased with him this morning but back again on Monday. We need gas masks right now as the stench is really something [boak]

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 24/03/2018 11:21

The holiday was due to start end of next week but even if he recovers well he won't be able to run about like we hoped so instead we will have our home comforts. Can't really claim on insurance as it's that tricky stages of not full recovered but not an emergency which would be covered.

OP posts:
Squirrel26 · 24/03/2018 11:37

Where were you supposed to be going? Any chance they will change the booking to another date for you?

BiteyShark · 24/03/2018 11:41

We can't really change our days off work so moving the holiday unfortunately wouldn't help.

It's a shame but one of those things and we will use the time to make sure he is 100% better for when I have to return to work. Bad timing but he's good at that Grin

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 24/03/2018 15:35

I can't actually explain how frequent and BAD the smell is that keeps coming from his bottom. I have never known anything quite like it Shock.

I do wish we get a bowel movement soon as it's really overpowering Grin
