General dog chat

Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

steppemum well done on DDs your lead training Grin

Avocados I bet PestDog loved his unlimited food Wink

steppemum · 20/03/2018 21:51

sorry avocados, but this made me laugh:

I've probably identified the cause of the vomiting at DF's house... hmm

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 20/03/2018 22:16

My old lab would have def thought the extra food well worth the vomiting😬

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 20/03/2018 22:18

And then she would have hoovered it back up

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 21/03/2018 01:04

It also probably explains why he now loves DF at least as much as me, if not more Hmm

I knew anyone could buy his love through throwing balls for him, but he's really hitting new lows for canine loyalty!

BiteyShark · 21/03/2018 05:44

Fuckity fuck, BiteyDog isn't well. Wobbling about and clearly feels sick as doing the licking lips and neck stretching. Thought we had cracked it and was due to lower his steroids today 😭

Soubriquet · 21/03/2018 06:30

Oh poor bitey dog Flowers

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 21/03/2018 07:12

Oh the poor thing Sad I know he's been sick a lot but has he been wobbly before?

I'm sure you'll be straight onto the vets once they open - keep us updated

BiteyShark · 21/03/2018 07:29

It's so hard to work out what is wrong. The wobbliness could be the steroids as it was early and they knock him out.

The vomiting could signs that his illness has gotten worse, or has he eaten something or could it just be bile as he hasn't actually vomited but made hacking up motions but nothing came out iykwim.

I gave him a small amount to eat as he went in the garden trying to eat grass and leaves so figured it was best to get him to eat a little food rather than the shit in the garden and then he will either get better or properly vomit and we know where we stand. Also he gets very ill if we starve him so the normal methods for a dog with stomach issues of no food don't work for him.

He is now on the sofa with me and all I can hear is his stomach gurgling away. He hasn't vomited and he's stopped the neck stretching so I am going to watch him for a bit to see which direction we go in just in case I am panicking for no reason.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 21/03/2018 08:30

Fingers crossed that a bit of food settles him, weren’t you feeding him small frequent meals once before when he was ill?

BiteyShark · 21/03/2018 08:34

Well food so far has stayed in him and the gurgling has subsided so fingers crossed.

Poor thing got up early this morning as clearly unwell and he always comes over to 'tell me' in his own way.

Oh and how ironic thegirlsallgrowedupnow that you mentioned Cocodog wanting to eat her vomit. BiteyDog is the same [boak]

OP posts:
thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 21/03/2018 08:42

That was my old Labrador , she used to eat too quickly and then regurgitate and eat it back up sometimes. I have wised up with cocodog and she eats from a slow feeder bowl. DH off work this week which means earlier starts for me and Coco 😕 so this morning she had half her breakfast tied up in an old tea towel taped inside a box and the rest a bit later in her bowl.

steppemum · 21/03/2018 08:53

Oh Bitey Sad
poor biteydog, he has had a hard time hasn't he?

Squirrel26 · 21/03/2018 09:21

Poor BiteyDog Sad Hopefully he just needed a bit of food. Steroids can give humans stomach ulcers, is it the same for dogs?

BiteyShark · 21/03/2018 09:28

I think the side effects are the same as for humans Squirrel26. I was just saying to DH that I might start to give him a dried biscuit at night just so he doesn't go along time without food which may help his stomach.

Wolfiefan · 21/03/2018 09:33

Mine has a snack when the kids go to bed. I'm sorry he is poorly. Poor pup.

BiteyShark · 21/03/2018 10:51

Yes I am going to move a box of biscuits into the bedroom so he can have one later in the night. Just hope he doesn't start trying to mug me for them Grin.

He seems much brighter but still has a bit of a 'hangdog' look about him Sad

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 21/03/2018 16:52

Waiting on phone back from the vets. He's just vomited his lunch back up so it isn't just a one off by the looks of it and he can't settle and is obsessively licking himself Sad.

Damn it, I thought we were finally turning a corner with his bad luck and illnesses.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 21/03/2018 18:33

Thankgod for pet insurance. We ended up being seen as he cried and cried and then vomited again. One anti sickness injection later we are back home.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 21/03/2018 21:56

Oh no. Hope he feels better soon. Wolfie pup is coming out in sympathy. She threw up her dinner. (Then tried to re eat it. Grim.)
Hoping it was due to the wormer she had.

steppemum · 21/03/2018 22:35

must be something in the air, steppedog had diarrhea this evening and was very unsettled, so I think he tummy is off.

He is normally cast iron stomach man, but he also eats everything in sight, so he could have eaten anything in the woods yesterday.

BiteyShark · 22/03/2018 01:26

Oh no. poor dogs Sad. It's horrible when they are ill. I hope they feel better soon.

Looks like BiteyDog is getting worse. He refused to eat anything, we even tried to hand feed him cooked cod which is his favourite. We have been up (hence this time of night on MN) with projectile diarrhoea of mucus [boak] every couple of hours. When we got on the scales at the vets he had lost even more weight so he's on a downward spiral. Back at the vets tomorrow unfortunately. I'm shattered, trying to doze in between garden visits.

You know your dog feels unwell when he decides the only place he can get comfy to sleep is in the shower tray Confused

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 22/03/2018 07:06

I would say it's because it's nice and cool.

When Nero my jrt, had a bad reaction to drontol, he kept wanting to go outside. At night.

Ended up sleeping outside on a chair that night keeping an eye on him, moving back into the living room with the windows open when it started to rain

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 22/03/2018 09:10

Oh Bitey Sad

Have you considered taking him to a referral specialist or even a vet school for diagnosis and treatment? My local vet school (RVC's Beaumont Sainsbury Animal hospital) is currently treating my elderly hamster for rates in line with local vets, and she doesn't even have anything particularly interesting or useful for teaching! It would at least give you access to a wider range of specialists if you're currently using a high street vet
