General dog chat

Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

Well we got looked at early and then I had to rush him down to the branch that does the surgery. They can now feel a hard lump in his intestine, possibly steroid related but maybe a foreign body.

Had to leave my poor boy again Sad

Well they did the scan quickly as only just home and they phoned. Not happy with it as shows lots of things wrong so they are operating right now to see what's going on.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 22/03/2018 11:46

Oh no ... sending BiteyDog lots of healing licks from teatimetoller

Wolfiefan · 22/03/2018 12:02

Thinking of you and Bitey dog. Hoping for good news soon.

BiteyShark · 22/03/2018 12:15

Thanks all, been worried sick here. They phoned to say they pulled a rag out of him which was stuck in his stomach and intestines. He's recovering well but always a risk of complications.

He's not one for stealing stuff so I guess I have been complacent but thank god he had the stomach illness because with that I never leave him long as he deteriorates quickly so shudder to think what would have happened if I had waited any longer to get him checked over.

Paws crossed for you and him.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 22/03/2018 13:37

Oh silly BiteyDog and what a good thing you didn’t wait any longer to get him seen. I hope he’s learned his lesson (mind you, one of my friends had a lab who had 3 operations during his lifetime for ingested socks, rags, underwear... he lived to the ripe old age of 14 though so no long term consequences)

Get well soon BiteyDog

steppemum · 22/03/2018 14:15

Oh bitey Sad

at least if it is something he has swallowed, once it is gone he should improve?
what a nightmare.

steppedog and I have been out all day. Had a (very short) meeting in the town my cousin lives in, so I stuck steppedog in car and after my meeting we dropping in. Haven't seen them for ages. They have an elderly golden retriever that we used to babysit for. He is very elderly now, and we went for a walk, steppedog literally running rings round him, he was so keen to play, but too old and stiff, he must be exhausted this afternoon.

They live near some nice walks, so after I left them we went up on the common, amazing place, I could see the whole Severn valley spread out below, there were sky larks everywhere, it was magical, slightly as if I had stepped back in time to some Roman/Iron Age era for some reason.
Over an hour running like mad up and down the hills, (on top of earlier walk) and at the end he sat down and looked tired (first time I think I have got close to that point).

It would have been perfect apart from steppedog rolling head first in a huge wet cow pat and then on the common he was rolling in poo. I didn't work out what sort of poo, becuase after he rolled in it (properly dragging his harness and ears deep in the poo) he then ate the rest.

We had to call in at Pet's at Home to buy dog shampoo, and I have soaped and rinsed the hair under his chin 3 times and it is still yellowy/green. Steppedog did NOT like having a bath and is now sulking, and slightly retching, so whatever he ate it is not sitting well.
daft animal.

Squirrel26 · 22/03/2018 15:02

Poor BiteyDog. Really hope he recovers well, and that this means that the steroids are still working after all.

Oh dear, SteppeDog. And you were having such a great day too... Grin

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 22/03/2018 15:04

Poor Bitey , at least this is nothing to do with his steroid treatment but what dreadful timing💐

BiteyShark · 22/03/2018 15:12

I know poor thing, sat waiting for an end of day update to see how he is. Can't believe the daft thing decided to eat a rag Shock

No idea how long it takes to recover from such things. He's going to be spoilt though when he gets home as he gave me such a scare when they said his intestines loops appeared stuck together and his stomach looked strange on the scan.

Oh dear steppedog is going to be in need of some doggie fragrance after his poo rolls Grin

In sympathy with you, Bitey, but not so alarming an incident, JoyfulDog has had the runs since the weekend and stopped eating and started vomiting last night. We went to vets this morning as my home remedies (probiotic paste, probiotic powder, Imodium) had not worked and she got an intravenous injection of anti-emetic and a course of antibiotic tablets. Just had a text from dogwalker to say JoyfulDog looking v miserable and refused to go out for a walk with her - oh dear, must try to get home early. (She got into the local stream/river, which was in spate and full of I don't know what, and had a big drink and I think this is where it started).

BiteyShark · 22/03/2018 16:55

Oh no mrsjoyful hope JoyfulDog perks up soon.

BiteyDog is staying in over night as they want to keep his fluids up as he's extremely groggy. Going to hate tonight as the house will be empty and quiet Sad

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 22/03/2018 19:09

Biteyshark, he is in good hands. You and your husband have had a gruelling time of it lately, worrying and running on adrenaline no doubt. Time to rest, relax with large glass of something, get a good nights sleep so you are in the best possible position to look after biteydog when he comes home.

Wolfiefan · 22/03/2018 20:36

The house might feel empty but at least they can monitor his closely and help him feel better. Hope he's home and causing chaos soon.

BiteyShark · 23/03/2018 04:48

That was a hard night but I was so exhausted I did sleep. The house is really not a home without him. Can't believe how different it seems without him clip clopping about on our floors.

We got an update last night to say he was still groggy and nauseous so they gave him some medication for the nausea. No news overnight from the emergency vets that take over from our vets so that's good.

OP posts:
steppemum · 23/03/2018 08:44

morning Bitey, hope biteydog is doing better this morning.
I noticed you posted at 4 am Sad

BiteyShark · 23/03/2018 08:55

steppemum BiteyDog normally starts huffing and sighing around 4am (as he wants to get up but has to wait for us Grin) as we get up for work at 5am so both DH and I automatically woke even though he wasn't around Sad

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 23/03/2018 08:56

Still waiting for a call from the vets. They start around 8:30 so hoping it won't be long now.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 23/03/2018 09:38

Can't come home yet. He won't eat and they won't let him home without him eating so they are going to try more meds Sad

OP posts:
noitsnotteatimeyet · 23/03/2018 09:57

BiteyShark - can you go in and try to get him to eat? When our cat got hit by a car and needed emergency surgery he wouldn’t eat afterwards so the vet asked me to go in and see if he’d eat for us ... he wasn’t eating because he was feeling too stressed so felt much better when he saw us

BiteyShark · 23/03/2018 10:09

They have said if he can't come home today they will arrange for me to visit. The vet said at the moment he looks like he is about to vomit so he thinks he must be feeling nauseous so they want to try more medication. I did think if they say he still isn't eating by the end of the day I will ask if I can try to coax him to eat.

We have rearranged everything at home so all beds are low level to avoid jumping so just want him home now Sad
