Yup! Hopefully it won't happen again :)

Thanks for the sympathy - between his shoulder and mine (I came off a horse on Friday!) it's been a fun few days. He's on the mend now, hopefully I'm not far behind...!

Wolfiefan · 26/11/2017 00:21

Ouch at coming off a horse! Yikes that hurts
Hope you both feel better soon.

BiteyShark · 26/11/2017 05:28

Grey without outing myself I think something about where we used to leave him reminds him a bit of being at the vets and being separated from us. Now he is older and hasn't shown any signs of destruction etc I am going to try and see how he is with free run of the kitchen when I leave him. He has a sofa in there which he often chooses to sleep in even if we are in another room. I have set up a camera so will watch him for a few days to see how he copes with that. He's only on his own for a max of 2.5 hours a day so it isn't a long time but obviously he's still traumatised from being apart and having to soil his crate etc.

Glad things are improving for you. What things do you have to 'get right' for GreyDog before you leave?

Filly poor you as well. Sounds like you are both suffering. Maybe if he doesn't improve an X-ray might be needed just to make sure nothing else is required other than rest. When BiteyDog was having X-rays and scans every day I did ask how much drugs they gave to keep him still in case they were affecting his stomach but they said they gave just the smallesr amount so they were awake but 'still' in case you are worried about him having to be 'put out' to do the X-ray.

Greyhorses · 26/11/2017 07:20

Filly I also came off my horse last week, must be in the air Grin

Bitey we to make sure she's really tired, has lots to do while I'm gone and have the radio on. I am also not allowed to just leave, I put her in the kitchen with dog1 and then go watch tv for 10-15mins until she settles and then go otherwise she cries as I leave. I've found if I do this she's nearly always fast asleep when I get back and no accidents. I also practice leaving about 100 times a day, putting her in the kitchen for 5-10mins so she isn't sure which times I'm leaving and which I'm not.
She still hates being crated so we leave her loose. Luckily there's nothing destroyable in our kitchen other than the dining table which is already chewed anyway!

Furrymum2 · 26/11/2017 09:55

I’m new-ish to mumsnet. We have a 10 week old Golden Retriever pup. And a 3 yr old rough collie. Wow, the pup is hard work!!!
All my dogs - pups and rescues have slept thru the night. This guy doesn’t. He’s also got a crazy gene and goes utterly bonkers at night after his tea and barks non stop, no matter what we try to do!
He’s beautiful though too, and a total love bug.
I remember that, for me, this period when they can’t go out is always really hard as they get stir crazy.
To make matters worse we lost my stepdad this week so my poor, bereaved mum is staying. And instead of peace and quiet she’s got a mad house!

BiteyShark · 26/11/2017 13:06

Welcome Furry. Mine used to wake lots to pee at night and always had zoomies in the evening Grin.

Grey we also did a trial today leaving him in the kitchen and he alternated sitting by the baby gate and watching birds in the back garden but after 20 mins he jumped on the sofa and curled up. Only left him 40 mins but I think that was a success given he has never been left in that room before. One thing I do need to think about it boredom proofing the kitchen in case he decides to make his own entertainment when he is left for his usual 2.5 hours. He doesn't tend to chew furniture but things like the tissue box on the kitchen table would be history Grin

Wolfiefan · 26/11/2017 14:17

Yep. Evening madness here too. Totally normal but completely exhausting. In the garden for that puppy!
You can't walk him but can and should carry him out. The more he sees of the world now the happier and more confident he will be. And training tires them out too. Time to teach a sit?!

Furrymum2 · 26/11/2017 16:21

He already knows his sit, Wolfie, and comes to his name. He can do a short stay too. Although the “down” eludes him totally lol. But the minute we eat he goes crazy. If we put him out of the room he cries as if he’s being murdered. In the room he sits and barks non stop. We have neighbours with three kids under five so it’s not great! I might try a raw carrot tonight - see if it shuts him up!

Furrymum2 · 26/11/2017 16:23

Bitey - my friends dog literally ate her wall. She came home to find a whole section of wall destroyed! One if mine once chewed through a boarded up cat flap and esacsped! They do seem to find mischief. X

BiteyShark · 26/11/2017 16:53

My parents old dog used to eat walls. I don't want to tempt fate but he hasn't ever been very destructive but I don't want to take any risk and would rather not see him eating the kitchen on camera whilst I am sat at work Grin.

The barking and howling is what I hope stops if we leave him on his kitchen sofa which he loves. He was clearly confused today on where we had gone but didn't look distressed which is reassuring. I just think being confined in a crate like area was stressing him out after he had been abandoned in the vets for several days.

Dottymum2 · 26/11/2017 17:30

Hi all, just after a little advice pls. Pup (10months) has been throwing up all day today, he's himself in every other aspect maybe a little quiet. It was just grass this morning then some proper sick after breakfast (ate half usually eats it all) and has thrown up after a crunchy fish bite thing which he is normally is totally fine with. No diarrhoea thou, would u ring vets or sit on it bit longer?

Elphame · 26/11/2017 17:38

If he is drinking and weeing normally and is his usual self other than being sick then I'd probably wait until the morning. If I thought he was in any pain or discomfort then I'd ring now.

Wolfiefan · 26/11/2017 17:59

Maybe picked up something he shouldn't have eaten? I would watch closely. If he's fine in himself and not dehydrated maybe wait and see.
Not a vet!
Mine ate a wall!!
Furry in a playpen somewhere he can see you (freeze that carrot it will last longer?!) or a stairgate on the dining room door.
Stuff a kong? If he's on kibble. Soak, stuff Kong and freeze! Peanut butter (xylitol free) works well too!
A wait is a good one to teach.
Down. Lead on. Works best with two people. One holds lead. Other uses treat to entice him down!

BiteyShark · 26/11/2017 18:22

Apparently vomiting can dehydrate more quickly than diarrhoea so watch out for dehydration. When mine started with his vomiting everything he ate kept coming back up and he was in obvious discomfort and wasn't himself. We knew something wasn't right but equally I have no problem ringing vets for advice and have found the out of hour ones are also helpful (and don't just say bring them in).

Keep a close eye on him. When mine has been ill I have slept near him so I could see how he was through the night which has helped to determine whether to phone vets first thing in the morning.

BiteyShark · 26/11/2017 18:30

Sorry should have added... could he have eaten anything he shouldn't have. Any bits of toys missing, socks etc that might indicate a blockage? Is his belly hard or sore to feel? Has he been anywhere he might have eaten anything toxic?

Wolfiefan · 26/11/2017 18:49

If he's a breed prone to bloat be extra careful

Dottymum2 · 26/11/2017 19:40

Thanks for help, no not eaten anything as far as I know. He's kept down a rice and kibble dinner so far so I'll keep an eye and monitor for now. He is drinking a normal amount.

Wolfiefan · 26/11/2017 19:40

That sounds positive.

BiteyShark · 26/11/2017 19:43

Hope he keeps it down.

Just be careful that he doesn't try and wander off to vomit out of sight and then tries to eat it back again so you won't notice (looks at BiteyDog)

Dottymum2 · 26/11/2017 21:18

Ha thanks for that Bitey!!! Mine would definitely try that! He had a shorter walk than usual and is currently conked!!!!

DeepfriedPizza · 27/11/2017 08:15

Why do dogs' worry you more than children? One minute I am worried about diarrhea next minute pizza pup didn't poo for 12 hours and I am googling blockages etc.

dogs and their bloody gastro problems...grumble grumble

QOD · 27/11/2017 08:51

My baby. 2 and a bit weeks until she comes home

Eeeeek

Puppy Survival Thread Part 5!
BiteyShark · 27/11/2017 09:03

QOD how cute. Have you everything ready or do you still need to buy more stuff (always need more kitchen towels for accidents Wink)

Dotty hows pup today?

Deepfried I cant believe how much stress they give you and I am pretty laid back normally about illnesses etc. Has PizzaPup been more active than normal as BiteyDog often empties himself (tmi) when he is really running about and then goes longer before a normal poo again.

Elphame · 27/11/2017 09:09

Oh good grief yes. I worried myself sick over Elfpup yesterday. Some child had spilt chocolate raisins (of all things) in the entrance of a shop. I spotted them at the same time as greedy guts. I was reasonably sure he hadn't got one but I wasn't 100% by any means..

Dotty - how is yours this morning?

Yokohamajojo · 27/11/2017 09:46

Oh they do know how to worry you all the time! recently we've had gunky eye, a wart like growth which luckily disappeared after antibiotics. Latest thing was some reaction to being hand stripped, I thought he had got himself fleas but now think it was just some scabs after being stripped.

Then on our walk this weekend in a big country park he ran off under some bushes and I heard a yelp, not from him but from a poor rabbit that he managed to get hold of Shock He looked rather pleased with himself but dropped it after being shouted at (I know but just panicked) I believe the rabbit was not right to begin with otherwise he wouldn't have got it! we had to put it out of it's misery Sad

He is a terrier and obviously can't help himself chasing furry things but I never ever thought he would actually get one
