Ah possibly Wolfie. If BiteyDog presented with bad D&V I would take him to the vets anyway and it's still an uncommon cause of illness plus all our vets know we walk dogs in woods because that's where we are Grin

My own personal take on all of these diseases is that if we avoided everything that could possibly be an issue no matter how small we would only be able to walk on the road on a lead which would be a miserable life for a spaniel. If you live in a city and would only visit woods as a special occasion then maybe you could avoid it without impacting yours dogs fun.

Alabama rot is VERY rare.
Seasonal canine disorder is not particularly common. It isn't a problem everywhere in the country.
I agree with Bitey. It's sensible to a kid areas where there is a specific known threat (poison or spillage on coast.) Our favourite walk is a local arboretum. She loves it. I vaccinate my dog and try and limit risk but won't stop her doing low risk things she loves.

Bananapup seems to be heading for adolescence, she always gets the zoomies in the evening and tries to attack our feet, but last night she was relentless. We’ve taught her sit and stay, the only way to get out of the room was to back out repeating ‘stay’, as soon as you turned your back she’d be after your feet again. Although according to DH she calmed down after I went to bed, had a good think about her behaviour and was very sorry Grin .

She’s also developing kleptomaniac tendencies. She especially covets anything owned by DD and will grab and run off with her things given half a chance. This morning she got her furry little paws on an eraser DD got in her advent calendar and chewed it to pieces, and I’ve just taken a well chewed trading card off her.

Added to this she’s found her bark, random hitherto ignored items in the house must be barked and growled at now. Unfortunately it’s a feature of her breed to do that (and pretty much what they were bread for). Good job she’s so damn cute really.

On the plus side we seem to have cracked house training, so there’s that.

GooodMythicalMorning · 25/01/2018 09:15

Yeah Indy seems to want anything in holding. Gets frustrating sometimes.

Look who's here! Arrived safe and sound Tuesday and settled nicely
Out to tesco today to meet his public and seems to be getting the hang of not peeing in the house!

thereinmadnesslies · 25/01/2018 22:39

Congratulations MsHomeSlice!

ZivaDiva · 26/01/2018 07:33

Mshomeslice He’s adorable, how old and what breed.? He looks similar to my monster.

GooodMythicalMorning · 26/01/2018 09:41

they could be twins ziva!! he is 9 weeks tomorrow

he's a lab/Gret cross ...mamma is a beautiful goldie and I guess pappa must be black....I never really get how it's just the two colours and not a mix
although some of the litter have brindle bits ,so maybe that's the mishmash?

ZivaDiva · 26/01/2018 10:09

Mine is a lab/working Springer cross with something else thrown in. Dad was definitely not a pure bred lab. He’ll be 3 months old on Tuesday and is adorable. We already have a 4 year old border collie who is helping to train him.😀

MsHomeSlice · 26/01/2018 10:17

I am really missing the helpful input from the big boys...the older one in particular really used to teach the puppies manners.

ZivaDiva · 26/01/2018 12:02

It is so much easier with two, from teaching him doggie manners, how to chill and how to knock on the door to go out. All easier with a well balanced big pup in charge.

thereinmadnesslies · 27/01/2018 10:58

Morning! I’m finding the biting really hard at the moment (madnesspup is 12.3wks). Any suggestions? We’ve been trying to distract him with a toy but he just has frenzied moments where he’s constantly jumping up to bite.
When he’s chilled he’s lovely though ...

GooodMythicalMorning · 27/01/2018 12:20

In frenzied moments I either removed myself or the dog from the room so he has a little timeout. Not for long as they don't need it. Just long enough for them to realise mum doesn't want to play that game.

OP posts:
MsHomeSlice · 27/01/2018 12:34

we've used all sorts of methods in the past, it really depends on the pup

ignoring was good...
Pup: bouncy bouncy play play
You:lots of praise, contact, encouragement
Pup:Biteybitey
You: stop dead, close down, arms folded, turn away
Pup: stops and sits. the second they withdraw you praise and carry on

find a noise they do not like, a low ah-ah cough, a sharp "oooww!" a hiss...do that as soon as the nipping starts.

timeout.

exchange your arm/finger/trouserleg for something they can bite...tends to be more effective for mouthing than the wild stuff though

try and avoid the frenzy in the first place....not always easy

this pup is very sweet and placid (so far!), but seems to wind up to madness and badness, so relocating to another room seems to draw a line and reset the crazy.

thereinmadnesslies · 28/01/2018 10:15

Thanks for all the suggestions. We are trying all that, I guess just keep going. One thing that seems to help when he gets bitey is going through his training sit/liedown/paw which seems to engage him.
Today puppy has stolen and eaten cat food, a slice of toast and several tissues. Unsurprisingly the dog food hasn’t been touched.

MsHomeSlice · 28/01/2018 11:49

if that works then do that,...ends things on a good note iyswim ....and then get about your business and let him settle, ime it's usually over excitement with biteyness so if you can just draw the line instead then all is good.

Elphame · 28/01/2018 16:32

I've lost my pup! They grow up so fast! He's been staying with friends for the last 10 days and he came home today.

I can't believe the difference in such a short time. He's filled out, he's changed colour as his adult coat has come in and he's now definitely a young dog rather than a scruffy puppy....

Still as lousy at recall as he was before though!

BiteyShark · 28/01/2018 18:16

Don't worry Elphame just when you think they are grown up they regress to daft puppiness for a bit to drive you mad Grin

Sostenueto · 28/01/2018 20:40

My puppy is such a whoooz! I bought konga today cost £15! Filled it with her favourite thing ( cheese) and what does she do? Runs a mile from it! Won't look at it even, barks at it and runs off! Put it in her toy box and refused to go to toy box for a toy as she usually does just stood barking! A real wimp!
She's destroyed so many toys and konga is a last resort ( bought konga ball too which she has managed to chew a tiny piece of!).
How can I get her interested in it and not fearful of it?

Sostenueto · 28/01/2018 20:45

A very high pitched ow! And limp limb stopped Cleo's bitieness. Which was a good thing as both hands and arms were covered in scabs! She just licks us to death now no nips at all but she is 6 months now.

Sostenueto · 28/01/2018 20:47

When really naughty was relegated to the bedroom all on her own which us a punishment for get ( being on her own) as she loves to be with people following everyone about and snuggling up to all and sundry!

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 30/01/2018 08:12

Elphame I've got one you can have... Grin

I am being driven slowly insane.

Elphame · 30/01/2018 14:32

Haha- thank you! I think I'll pass though Wink

He's just walked 6 human miles and has crashed. Peace reigns. I might even get some work done.

ZivaDiva · 30/01/2018 16:14

Finally got a decent photo of my little angel. Black dogs are so hard to photograph.
