Sick dog...to take to the vets or not?

My girl woke me up at 4am, came down to 2 pools of vomit, she continued to vomit for over an hour but was outside so I could not see what she was bringing up (indoors it was mainly bile and grass), I'm not sure if she has diarha as again she was outside and there's no light, eventually she settled with me on the sofa but she is trembling and is still trembling now. She does to the trembling thing sometimes, she's a SBT and this seems to be something they do but this has continued, it's now 8.30am.

She's ten years old, occasionally vomits in the morning, I think just due to a empty stomach but otherwise seems healthy.

Do I take her into the vets? Or do I wait?

I am really worried about her Sad

Definitely contact the vet's. Hope she's soon on the mend.

dudsville · 16/09/2017 08:13

Always go if you're worried. Better to waste a trip then miss something vital. The vet can recommend some kind of paste that helps settle their system. Poor pup. Ours also had tins of chicken and rice. Hope she feels better soon.

If it was a weekday I'd say watch and wait but as it's Saturday is be inclined to go. You don't want to be saddled with ooh bill!

Lovemusic33 · 16/09/2017 08:16

Thank you. Booked her in for 9.45am, vets advised I bring her in as it's the weekend and they are only open a couple hours today (emergency call out would cost a fortune). She's not got up to ask for breakfast, still led on the sofa. Have covered her with a blanket as it's a bit chilly in my house this morning. Will let you know how we get on.

Your dog has been vomiting for an hour and you are asking an Internet forum for advice? Take it to the fucking vet, is that honestly not obvious? What would you "wait" for? Until it's choked?

Lovemusic33 · 16/09/2017 08:28

Frilly she's booked in for the vets. Dogs get sick, often it passes after an hour or so? Which is why I was unsure but I called the vets before anyone replied to the post as she does not look very well. Thanks for the advice though.

Ffs frilly.

notarehearsal · 16/09/2017 08:35

So glad you're doing what you feel is right OP but I've had dogs for 30 odd years and have had many binge on something and become sick. I've only taken one to the vet, it just felt different and it wasn't stopping. Dog had been poisoned by something and needed to be sedated
The rest of the time I just kept close eye to make sure they're still drinking and alert

Lovemusic33 · 16/09/2017 08:40

Vet asked if she could have eaten something she shouldn't have but I can't think of anything, she doesn't move off the sofa much these days. She hates being walked so I rarely take her anywhere (we have a big garden that she strolls around in).

She just jumped off the sofa and asked to go out, she's wobbly and her back is slightly hunched, not herself at all Sad, I'm clock watching until I can take her into the vets.

Frilly I wouldn't take my children to the doctor after an hour's vomiting..??

notarehearsal · 16/09/2017 09:28

GeorgeTheHamster exactly!
Must say I see a lot of hysteria here on occasion shouting about taking animals to a vet.
Mine ate something vile in the garden, they were very very sick on and off all day, could hardly move but I knew in my heart they'd be OK and I could also stay with them. However a neighbour got quite hysterical and insisted I took them to the vets. 'Yep' he says ' they've eaten something vile, that'll be £70'!! I know follow common sense just as I would with a vomiting child

BiteyShark · 16/09/2017 09:40

If I am not confident it's 'just one of those things that will clear' and I will worry and google all the time I take mine to the vets as I see it as a small price to pay for peace of mind. Hope she gets better soon OP.

BiteyShark · 16/09/2017 09:41

Also at that age you know your dog so trust your instincts if you feel something is 'off'

Char22thom · 16/09/2017 09:46

My 5yr old has been ill about 3 times with vomiting, once was a lot but gave 24hrs and she was on the mend, agree you dont always need to take then straight away just as you wouldn't with children, but you know your dog best and can tell. Good luck at vets op

Patchouli666 · 16/09/2017 10:27

The symptoms she's got could point to a blockage or damages intestine. The vomiting without anything from back end means she is bringing up what can't get through. Hope all is ok at vets and it turns out to be an infection at worst.

Seeyamonday · 16/09/2017 10:31

Any news yet? How is she?

PhatSlag · 16/09/2017 10:33

I've never ever taken a dog to the vets because it was sick a few times.
Dogs get sick occasionally just like people.
Hope your dog is feeling better soon.

Lovemusic33 · 16/09/2017 10:37

Vet gave me several options, we have gone for a anti sickness injection and she has until the vets close at 12.30 to keep some chicken down. I have just fed her a tiny piece and now we wait. If it comes back up then she has to go in for a scan to check for a blockage and blood tests to check for and poisoning or illness. I can't think of anything she could have got hold of as she's not really a chewer and not a food oriantated dog, she's not been anywhere to go near poison, our garden is safe and secure.

Hopefully it's just a tummy bug and she will keep some food down.

OP posts:
lougle · 16/09/2017 10:41

I think you may need to feed her a little more than a tiny piece to assess whether it will stay down. I hope you find that she's just suffering from a jippy tummy Flowers

Seeyamonday · 16/09/2017 10:58

When I got my beautiful dog (Greyhound Rescue) all the changes upset her tummy, the vet gave me probiotic paste in a large syringe that you squirted into her mouth, it worked wonders!! I hope she feels better soon X

Frillyhorseyknickers · 16/09/2017 11:10

Frilly I wouldn't take my children to the doctor after an hour's vomiting..??

Great, but it's not a fucking child, is it? I wouldn't take my husband to the doctor if he was spewing for an hour but that is just as irrelevant.

Children vom all the time and mostly it's for minor issues. Dogs are not randomly sick for no reason - if one of my dogs was vomiting like that it would be fairly obvious to take it to the vets incase something was stuck. Dogs eat all kinds of random shit.

Lovemusic33 · 16/09/2017 11:30

see we have been given the probiotic paste.

lougle vet said start with a small piece of chicken and after half an hour try a little bit more and so on until 12. I'm just doing what I have been told but so far so good considering she wasn't even keeping water down when I took her in to the vets.

Frilly yes your right and I did follow my instinct and called the vet as soon as I wrote the post. She does vomit from time to time (usually due to having a empt stomach) so at first it wasn't a unusual thing for her, then she continued and looked poorly so I called the vet. It still looks like it's just a bug rather than a blockage, she hasn't been anywhere to eat anything, she hardly moves of the the sofa, dd1 was looking after her last night when I was at work and said she hadn't been outside and hadn't eaten anything.

Seeyamonday · 16/09/2017 11:52

Good luck Lovemusic33, let us know how she gets on X

lougle · 16/09/2017 12:18

Ok, I hope she continues to recover. Smile

Lovemusic33 · 16/09/2017 16:21

Well we got to the 12.30 cut off point (vets closing) and she kept chicken down. its now 4.20pm and she has been sick again Sad, she's just bringing up yellow bile, no sign of the chicken. Not sure what to do? Do I wait a couple more hours and try and get more chicken into her? Do I call out of hours vet? Obviously out of hours will cost me a fortune but if she's ill she's ill.
