Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

BiteyShark · 14/07/2017 10:28

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

I'm up at stupid o'clock due to what I am hoping will be the last night I sleep next to BiteyDog (just getting my doggy cuddles in given that he woke me up).

blue I am of the opinion that I would rather pay whatever price it costs and take him to the vets to get peace of mind so I would have probably done the same thing as you. I quite like the fact that for pets it is private care so you can access help for worrying issues at any time.

Coco glad to hear from you again and see that things are still going well.

Glitter some people sleep next to their pup and gradually retreat over time. I didn't and am only sleeping with BiteyDog because of his operation as I am paranoid he will lick and bite his wound. When mine cried at night I got up and took him outside for a pee or poo then back in crate without saying a word to him and although I had to repeat this he did get the message night was for sleeping unless he needed to pee and soon I didn't have crying although I did still have to set an alarm to take him to the toilet at set times in the night.

Yay, last sleep Bitey Grin

Will have to clean up my house and car today. Bluepuppy managed to vomit in a really hard to get to spot in my car.

BiteyShark · 24/08/2017 06:29

Oh no, get those rubber gloves on for the car valet Sad

SkeletonSkins · 24/08/2017 09:54

Oh no blue his poor little nose! I've heard that whippety dogs skin can cut a lot more easily than others as it's thin, is that true?

Bitey how's pup doing? Hope he's feeling a little better!

Glitter well I gave in on night two and had pup in our bed!! Luckily it didn't make a rod for our own back and after he got more confident he was happy to sleep downstairs. So yeah I'd either sleep on the sofa for a few nights or put the crate in your room. They definitely do get used to it and as they grow in confidence they're happy to sleep where you want them to.

We're at a training weekend this weekend which I'm looking forward to but hoping pup doesn't show me up! Hoping to get tested on the good citizen bronze test too so might achieve that.

BiteyShark · 24/08/2017 10:05

Good luck with the training Skeleton

BiteyDog is much better and hoping we get the all clear later today at the vets. His wound looks ok and the swelling has gone down and is a normal pink colour rather than angry red (he does still look like he has two small testicles though Grin).

blue did you manage to clean the car?

OP posts:
bluetongue · 24/08/2017 10:37

Skeleton it was a blood nose like humans after a bump get rather than a cut on his nose. Whippets do seem to get cuts and scrapes more than other dogs though.

The car is sort of cleaned but will have to take it to car wash place and vacuuming on the weekend to get last of it out.

Yay for less swollen genital area on Biteydog Grin

roundtable · 24/08/2017 13:50

I hope all the pups are feeling better. Flowers

I'm finding it really hard to write on this thread as it's so long - it's making my phone go weird so I'll keep it short.

BiteyShark · 24/08/2017 18:11

BiteyDog has been given the all clear. He is so pleased to be able to play ball again Grin

Wolfiefan · 24/08/2017 19:55

Good news for Bitey!!!

GetTheStartyParted · 24/08/2017 20:41

Yay! Have fun BiteyDog.
I'm visiting my sister tonight and pup is at home, it's so quiet but DSis dog is curled up on my lap Grin

DeepfriedPizza · 24/08/2017 20:43

Glad for biteypup

PizzaPup ate my copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Sad
She still has the shits

BiteyShark · 25/08/2017 05:47

Deepfried maybe the book will help bung up PizzaPup Grin. On a serious side if it isn't getting better I would phone the vet for advice. We have had various treatments for the runs so you might just need something different.

Well last night went surprisingly smoothly. Played ball to tire BiteyDog out. He was let back into the other parts of the house now he is allowed to jump as much as he likes and he settled back into the old routine. He went straight back into the crate at night and didn't cry once which I was surprised about. Our first off lead walk today will be fun today as I am expecting him to be very excited.

Oh I'm so happy that Biteypup is back to normal!

BiteyShark · 25/08/2017 08:30

Thank you Grin. It is such a relief and he wasn't too bad on the walk as I expected him to go a bit batty after his restricted activity but he was actually ok.

DeepfriedPizza · 25/08/2017 15:19

What a relief it must be for Biteypup is back to normal! great news!

Solid poop from Pizzapup this morning Grin

BiteyShark · 25/08/2017 15:35

Isn't it funny how we become obsessed with how our dogs poo is Grin. I am glad PizzaPups tummy is finally settled.

OP posts:
SkeletonSkins · 25/08/2017 17:44

Yayyy solid poo!

Pup was great at day one of training day, he was confident and friendly which has been a big thing for us! Even let a new lady he only met today 'inspect' him so check his ear eyes teeth etc. He was exhausted by the end of the day and didn't fancy staying for the down stay but I can come to terms with that!

DeepfriedPizza · 25/08/2017 18:03

I spoke too soon Sad she had a wet poo this afternoon

towelpintpeanuts · 25/08/2017 18:10

Lovely to hear about all the puppy poo ;-) Yay on bitey-pup being back on the road (lead?!) and poor old blue :-(

We've got a busy weekend coming up with towelpup - lots of visitors and visits - hoping he takes it all in his stride and doesn't bark too much :-)

Skeletonskins - tell us about your training weekend? Towelpup has a dropping training session he goes to still on a Sunday, and we did a fun tricks session with the behavioralist this week, but I'm always on the look out for more training :-) I think he'd love agility, but he's too little to get properly started on that yet...

BiteyShark · 25/08/2017 20:27

Skeleton sounds like pup is doing very well. I bet he sleeps soundly tonight Grin.

Oh no Deepfried just when you thought the poo was better Sad

towelpintpeanuts you just reminded me I need to contact an agility group I found locally to be put on their waiting list. I think the general consensus is that at 1 year they are old enough to start so we are almost there and they ask for basic obedience and good recall which I am hoping he has enough of now to start.

BestIsWest · 25/08/2017 22:19

Poor pup has a yeast infection in his ear. Drops and steroids from the Vet.

Turns out they have a rather explosive effect on his digestive tract, poor thing.

And poor me having to scrub down his crate, the breakfast room walls and him at 5:30 am.

We haven't had our two year old male neutered. We thought long and hard but he
And poor me having to scrub down his crate, the breakfast room walls and him at 5:30 am.

bluetongue · 25/08/2017 23:52

That sounds very unpleasant for both of you Bestiswest. Hope pup feels better soon.

Deepfried does it sound wrong to say I hope her next poo is better? The things we do for our pets Grin

Bluepuppy still seems fine and no more blood. Pretty sure he's staying now. I feel a bit bad about seriously considering returning him to the breeder but I can now see that I was going through a pretty bad depressive episode due to bleupup's issues. I finally feel I'm at the stage where he is helping me feel happier and not making my depression worse. I've always loved him though Smile

BiteyShark · 26/08/2017 06:35

Best that sounds grim Sad. At least the crate got a good clean Grin.

Awww blue you just needed to get over the hump where the issues became less than the good bits. Glad bluepup is giving you joy and not grief anymore Smile.

I am so glad the puppy trials are coming to an end. We are planing a day out for BiteyDog on his birthday in just over a month, I can't believe that time has flown so quickly. He was always my dog but he has melted DHs heart who can't imagine life without him now.

SkeletonSkins · 26/08/2017 17:43

Blue we've all been at that point - sometimes it just seems you're in a hole with them and scrabbling to get back out but even just time does the world of good for them.

towel it's a weekend that my training club organise where they invite trainers to come and do some obedience work, they run the kennel club good citizen tests over the weekend and have other bits like agility and tracking going on. It's good fun!

This morning we entered a battle. I don't know what happened but he was just refusing to do anything, even sit! I got stressed out and really i forgot he's still young and to make it fun. He wouldn't even stay for 20 seconds but it was because I was stressing him out. Trainers reminded me to keep it all play based, use the toys etc and then he was back to normal. So much so that he passed his Kennel club bronze good citizen this afternoon!

Bitey our agility has a foundation skills class where they don't really do equipment but it's all about directions and following your body language etc. Might be worth getting in contact as our club takes pups on this foundation course from 8 months although obviously they don't jump or anything until a year in the higher up classes. I love agility though - I did it with my previous dog and it's just good fun for you and the dog. I bet Biteypup will love it as it's so active.

BiteyShark · 26/08/2017 17:51

Well done SkeletonPup on his good citizen award 😁. I bet you are both very tired after this weekend.
