Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Good luck with the trainer Deepfried. It so helps having someone who can work with you 1-1. I think just by having someone look at you and the dog and saying we can work through the issues takes a lot of the stress away.

DeepfriedPizza · 22/08/2017 12:28

I think she'll really benefit from 1-1 rather than the classes

SkeletonSkins · 22/08/2017 12:42

Pizza do you have any idea what it is that she's actually barking at?

I think an issue with the collars is that the second you remove the collar they realise they can just bark again. If she hates being away from you I'd be tempted to remove her from the room each time she starts barking, like a time out almost.

GetTheStartyParted · 22/08/2017 13:00

Hi, I've been lurking for aaaaaaages! Delurking to ask for some help please. My pup is now 4 months old and doing great. Training is going well. Our problem is that she gets too excited when we see other people and dogs when out walking. I read up on it and it was recommended that I get her to sit while they pass and then reward her, which we made great progress with. But people keep coming to make a fuss of her and even if I cross they road or tell them why I have made her sit, they come over to stroke her and she goes wild, spinning in circles and jumping over and over. Any words of wisdom please guys?

CornflakeHomunculus · 22/08/2017 13:02

Deepfried do you have any idea what it is that's setting her off barking? Is she literally never, ever quiet?

Rather than using the collar on her I'd recommend posting on this FB group and getting some professional advice.

Is the trainer you're going to be using a member of one of these organisations and did they suggest or OK the use of the collar?

BiteyShark · 22/08/2017 13:17

GetTheStartyParted I had that when my pup was small. I had to develop a thick skin and basically tell people we are in training so he can't be stroked right now. Some people even ignored that which makes me Angry

If you're anywhere near South Yorkshire Deepfried this behaviourist (who wrote the article I linked to on your other thread) is based there and obviously has experience with Romanian rescues. If you're not local she also does phone/Skype consultations which may be useful until you can get some one to one training in person.

GetTheStartyParted · 22/08/2017 13:25

Thank you @BiteyShark I was afraid you would say that, I am rubbish at being assertive but I cannot think of any other way.

CornflakeHomunculus · 22/08/2017 13:30

Are you taking her to training classes Get? They can be invaluable for stuff like this.

I also rate ringcraft (showing lessons) even if you're not particularly interested in showing. They can be absolutely great for socialisation and also getting used to being around people/other dogs without necessarily interacting all the time.

GetTheStartyParted · 22/08/2017 13:33

No, no training classes. As she was doing so well with training and we have a few dog friends, I wasn't going to but we cannot spend much time around other dogs yet as pup just doesn't calm down. Older dogs soon get fed up of her and I don't like letting her bother them. Thank you for replying Smile I will have a look what classes are around.

GetTheStartyParted · 22/08/2017 14:05

They are great thanks @SkeletonSkins and would probably work well when we go further afield but a lot of the 'offenders' are well meaning neighbours and as we are in a small town, that extends to people we bump into in each park we go to.

My biggest concern is that a lot of other owners tell me that their dog is friendly when I'm trying to keep my puppy away so they let their dog approach while she is bouncing around and then they snap at her. It scares both of us and I'm worried that she will get hurt one day. Therefore, we have been avoiding walking where other dogs are but that probably means she is more excited when she finally encounters another dog. Sorry for the essay!

Wolfiefan · 22/08/2017 14:08

Hi get. How about a yellow lead or an in training one? Might dissuade the eejits?!
I AM HOME. I HAVE MY PUPPER BACK. YAY!!!!!
She's now on raw food and itchiness gone. Another week or so I reckon to go of season. I am so happy to have her home. She's sleeping off the excitement! Grin

BiteyShark · 22/08/2017 14:34

Welcome home Wolfie did you and WolfiePup enjoy your respective holidays?

Get I walk my dog where we don't come across many people or dogs. I do however still go to group training which concentrates on keeping the dog focused with other distractions so best of both worlds. My dog is also still over excited when meeting dogs and people when he is on the lead but is fairly calm now if he is off the lead and that was because we did what you are trying to do which is get them to sit and focus on you until person or dog has passed.

GetTheStartyParted · 22/08/2017 15:01

Thank you. It's great to have advice from people that have recently dealt with similar.

A friend and her toddler just nipped round unexpectedly and it took about 15 minutes of calmness but then pup stopped jumping up. Perhaps I need to be a bit more sociable so that she gets used to a variety of people.

SkeletonSkins · 22/08/2017 16:04

There's also an element of they do grow out of the excitedness too so avoidance isn't all bad!

We've just tackled the dreaded nail cut! Got a little bit off all his nails but they're still quite long!

CornflakeHomunculus · 22/08/2017 16:13

Have you seen the nail related stuff on the useful resources sticky thread Skeleton?

The FB group is especially good if you're finding nail trims tough, I've been using the techniques covered in their 'Files' section for ages now and my lot have gone from hating nail trims to having a scrum to see who gets done first Grin

DeepfriedPizza · 22/08/2017 16:30

I do appreciate you replying cornflake. I've read the information on the Facebook group you linked but they all rely on you being able to distract them and be able to read their cues.
Pizzapup barks when people enter the house, go past the window, past the garden. Basically she barks a lot when in the house. Not when out.

As I've said, we have a trainer starting next week who trains military dogs, sniffer dogs etc so I'm sure he'll help.

BiteyShark · 22/08/2017 16:34

Deepfried my dog never used to bark then suddenly found his voice. He tends to bark at 'noises' but it would drive me potty if he did it all the time so you have my sympathies. Maybe in the meantime could you close the curtains so he can't see people walking by and or get a white noise machine or a fan (I use one of these at night) which helps muffle outside sounds which helps stop BiteyDog being 'alerted' by the odd noise.

DeepfriedPizza · 22/08/2017 16:36

In other news pizzapup was left the longest she'd ever been left before today. It was supposed to be 45 minutes as dd had swimming lessons and dh was leaving work early but he got stuck in traffic (typical) so it was closer to 90 mins and she was fine. Was snoozing on the sofa when he got home.

Primrose06 · 22/08/2017 17:24

After almost 30 years we got our first puppy. It has been a learning curve. Puppy training was essential. I also had a private session with the trainer. (Money well spent)
With her being a small breed she can race round a well fenced garden at her leisure.
She has enriched our family no end and is part of it.
She even has a car seat so she can look out the window and loves the car. We take her most places.

We had a lovely holiday in Italy. Wolfiepup went to Wolfhound Heaven. A farm in Devon with acres of land and friends to play with. She loved the food so much I had to bring home a couple of months supply! Grin

GetTheStartyParted · 22/08/2017 18:17

@Wolfiefan I love Italy, lucky you. Hope you had a wonderful time. It certainly sounds like Wolfiepup did Grin I bet you feel relieved after worrying aboitabout leaving her.

BiteyShark · 22/08/2017 18:24

Very cute Primrose06. I agree they are such hard work initially but soon become part of the family.
