Yoko very handsome.
Kept big girl on three meals for ages. Just as pups wolfhounds need a lot of food but have tiny tums.
She wasn't happy about nails. Kept getting agitated, trying to move, shifting foot away. Clip. Treat. Praise. Repeat. She settled down so the lovely nurse suggested we stop rather than aggravating her again! We pay per month for flea etc. it includes claws. We may be there weekly!

BiteyShark · 11/07/2017 14:43

Awww bless her. Mine hates his paws and tail being touched. The groomer had a real job last time trimming his fur on his paws so I don't think the nails got done so it might be a visit to the vets for a trim.

SkeletonSkins · 11/07/2017 16:19

Awww poor Wolfie pup, they're always so funny with their nails. I do my dogs but I put it off for as long as possible!

Training went well! He was overwhelmed by all the new faces and dogs at first but I'm starting to recognise the signs that he's feeling uneasy and methods of helping him chill out. I've also worked out the reason he was doing some tricks at home but then acting like he had no clue in class - he doesn't like doing them with his lead on 😂 What a diva dog!

BiteyShark · 11/07/2017 16:46

Arghhh my dog wants me to play ball with him all the time. When I stop he gives me the sad eyes and sits with the ball at his feet constantly looking at me then the ball. His latest tactic is to drop the ball in my lap. STOP GUILT TRIPPING ME Grin

Very funny about the lead Skeleton, can you get an extra long one that trails behind him so he doesn't think your holding it Wink. Glad you're both enjoying the training.

SkeletonSkins · 11/07/2017 18:12

Ah we have the tennis ball thing!! It's honestly an obssession. I'm plagued by him dropping it at my feed and those same eyes!!

Yokohamajojo · 11/07/2017 18:39

I feel slightly jealous as mine is really not that interested in balls and toysHmm I will bring a ball to the park and he chases it with great enthusiasm about twice and then he starts sniffing around instead! He loves sniffing and the game of 'find it' is excellent for a distraction tactic if I see something up ahead!

BiteyShark · 11/07/2017 18:47

Yokohamajojo mine also won't entertain a ball when out walking as he just wants to hunt. Inside the house though he wants to play all the time. I ordered a bulk bag of kong tennis balls that squeek which are now scattered through the house and garden Grin

Wolfiefan · 11/07/2017 18:58

Mine loves the kong jumbled ball. She would swallow a tennis ball. One of the secure spaces we use has burst footballs. She loves them
Her nails are really bloody thick. And black. And I can't hold her and cut. Shall be using vets!

SkeletonSkins · 11/07/2017 22:30

We use those kong squeaky balls! They're fab.

Wolfiefan · 11/07/2017 23:03

She kind of murdered the squeak! Grin

bluetongue · 12/07/2017 10:26

Good to hear pup's going well captain. Smile as far as meals go my pup is still eating four times a day at nearly five months but he's a very busy whippet puppy so not really typical.

Your pup is looking super smart Yoko. It's a Welsh Terrier right?

Things are pretty much the same with Bluepuppy. If I'm being truly honest I'm still not sure I'm the right home for him but feel a bit trapped now that his separation anxiety has been diagnosed Sad He has another vet appointment Friday and will be starting his long term medication.

The good news is I've found a whippet play date Smile The woman from nearby has agreed to bring one of her whippets around on the weekend to try with Bluepuppy. If it turns out he really needs another dog to be happy I'll have to think long and hard about what to do. It seems cruel to keep him as an only dog if it's making him miserable. Still, another dog would be cheaper than sending him to day care all the time!

BiteyShark · 12/07/2017 10:33

blue do you have a plan of action with the play date? If they get on together are you leaving them alone to see if bluepup cries? Fingers crossed you get a solution and maybe the long term medication will be more successful as well.

bluetongue · 12/07/2017 10:45

Think play date will be a play it by ear kind of thing. Other whippet only lives five minutes away so easy for them to come back if needed. Plan is if they are happy to leave them at my place together for a little while and film what Bluepuppy does. No one can say I'm not trying everything Grin

BiteyShark · 12/07/2017 11:24

Good luck blue. I know how much bluepup means to you so hoping you find a solution for his anxiety.

Captainladder · 12/07/2017 12:46

hope the playdate goes well blue I'm trying to organise some playdates for pup to socialise him. Vet thinks he might not know how to deal with dogs otherwise as he's left mum so early. Pups and kids have a more social life than me LOL

Dog beds - at the moment we are only using vet bed in the crate at night and he has a vet bed piece in his play pen. Now he is allowed to potter in some of the rooms downstairs, should he have a designated bed?! At the moment he is curled up on pillows that have been designated as dog pillows and help to keep him out from under the tv unit/ into areas where there are wires etc. What size if so? have been told he will just chew it, so is a large plastic bed with a cusion on better? or soft dog bed thats more puppy size and then replace as he grows?

He's desperately trying to make friends with the cat, who is gradually thawing.

towelpintpeanuts · 12/07/2017 14:58

Ahhh, yoko - sooo cute! Welto?? Mine's not really interested in balls either except occasionally - although he likes running with other dogs chasing their own balls! Not a terrier thing I think!

Blue - DO let us know how it goes, we'll be thinking of you both!

Dog beds - we still just use sort of padded flat bed on top of vet fleece in crate and have a few of them - so one goes with him when he goes to Dh's work, one gets plonked in whatever room he's in. he does sleep on them sometimes, but is just as likely to flop on the laminate... not sure if it's worth it!

Wolfie - how's your ankle doing?

Wolfiefan · 12/07/2017 15:44

NOBODY could say you're not trying everything Blue. And you clearly want what's best for pup. We got through separation anxiety but it was weeks of not leaving her. At all. Then just a couple of seconds. Etc. very hard
I'm planning on getting madam a hi k9 dog bed as they are one of the few that fit her. She so has a single mattress in the living room!
Ankle is still very sore and the opposite knee is now coming out in sympathy. But after two chemist visits I have some proper support. Dog walk today was at proper wolfhound speed rather than shuffle and limp!Grin

BiteyShark · 12/07/2017 18:27

Captainladder I went through a few beds as he would eventually chew them especially any that had zips so I stuck to fairly cheap ones. Now we are past the chewing stage he now has an expensive matress one in his crate. However in all the other rooms I found he really liked sleeping on cheap duvets which I folded up to make a big squishy bed for him. The advantage of them is that I can easily wash the duvet covers when they get smelly or dirty and they were much cheaper than most beds Grin

SkeletonSkins · 12/07/2017 21:14

Our dog sleeps in the others dogs bed and won't be persuaded otherwise. Other dog chooses to sleep on the floor.

I feel guilty this week, very busy week at work and feel like I've barely seen them or given them enough of my time. We've made sure they've not been left for log periods so it's not that I feel bad about, it's just not seeing them myself and things have probably been a bit bland for them. This time next week though I will have finished for 6 weeks so just need to get to then!

bluetongue · 13/07/2017 09:08

Is it bad that my pup sleeps in my bed at night Grin

So all these weeks later and Bluepuppy is still crying on the other side of the baby gate Sad Granted, it's not as bad as before and he mostly sits and cries instead of standing with his paws on it but still, I hear him crying and it starts my tears up.

Sorry for the continued venting on here. Every one has been so understanding and kind Smile

On a completely unrelated subject, how do you all deal will poo on concrete and paving in your backyards? Obviously the poo gets picked up but often there is a small amount that remains. Sorry for the TMI!

BiteyShark · 13/07/2017 09:12

blue mine cries when he is frustrated so if he can see we are doing something on the other side of the gate that he wants to join in with (like opening a parcel) he will start whining. I have just learnt to ignore him Grin

As for poo I use a watering can or hose pipe to wash away any sloppy residue.

BiteyShark · 13/07/2017 09:35

Oh and if him sleeping on your bed works for you then keep doing it Grin

Mine doesn't mainly because I don't think he would get much sleep in the same room as us and I wanted him used to his crate for boarding when we go on holiday otherwise I think DH would have him in the bedroom at night Grin

Yokohamajojo · 13/07/2017 09:44

Towel and Blue He is an Irish Terrier

I was watching a programme on Channel 4 regarding dogs and separation anxiety, it was really interesting but quite harrowing as they filmed dogs being left alone and then showed it to their owners. It was also good in pointing out training methods to combat it. I am not sure when it was on as we watched it on catch up. Did anyone else see it?

towelpintpeanuts · 13/07/2017 10:15

Ahhh, Irish, of course - thought he didn't look quite 'normal' for a welsh but couldn't work out why!!

Blue: Towelpup sometimes whines if we are doing something in another room in the evenings (when by LAW we should all go into the front room and watch TV with him Hmm) - it's the worst noise - just so sad Sad. Yoko's link sounds like an interesting watch, but maybe only if you're feeling strong...?

Wrt poo

GooodMythicalMorning · 13/07/2017 12:37

I have an 11 week old bulldog pup. He's gorgeous. Just taught him to 'leave it' as he has a tendency to grab clothing and so occasionally gets skin. He's doing well. Had him three weeks and can't imagine life without him now. Smile
