We are now at nearly 9 and a half months. Things are soooooo much easier. The little pup stage feels like it lasts forever but it really doesn't. I can leave her unattended now. She doesn't chew stuff she should'nt. we have a routine. Fear period sort of passing. Now if I had perfect recall?! Confused

Soubriquet · 03/07/2017 12:16

Ah recall is one thing I don't have an issue on.

She loves being off lead but comes back when called.

If she spots a dog in the distance, she immediately comes back as she's not sure on other dogs yet. But she did have a play session with a shih tzu the other day. Proper play bowing and chase me vibe but the shih tzu wasn't interested and just pootled off to do her own thing.

Yes agree 9 months here and it is SO much better. Nights and mornings are calm. He can 'mostly' be trusted to mooch about without getting stuff he shouldn't. He still has a mad few mins occasionally but it is easily managed.

Recall is still my issue. He is definitely worse when my DH comes along with me Sad. Thought I had lost him when he spooked and chased a dear the other day as despite shouting and blowing my whistle I could not see him anywhere. He bounded up to me from behind a few minutes later panting really hard and then stuck to me like glue for the rest of the walk. I think he scared himself in thinking he had lost me as he must have circled round trying to get back.

Yokohamajojo · 03/07/2017 12:46

I had a bit of a breakthrough with recall on Sunday. We were in a big nature reserve park thing and he is usually very good there but again I don't trust he won't run up to any dog that he fancies. We were the whole family out which is unusual so he loved being with us all. At one point he ran towards two other dogs and I shouted his name and leave it in a stern voice and lo and behold, he stopped and ran back! I was so taken aback as usually when he has lost focus on me he will just keep going. I think I just need to be more confident with him but I am still worried he is going to run up to the 'wrong' dog

towelpintpeanuts · 03/07/2017 14:30

It's so funny how different they all are: that what one pup is sailing through another one is struggling with! Ours is coming up to 5 months now, and Soubriquet, like others here he's kept in one room (kitchen/diner) most of the time - he comes in the front room to watch TV with us in the evenings, and occasionally escapes upstairs to find the kids, but tbh I wouldn't trust him there - there are just too many things on the floor, whereas the kitchen is a pretty dog-safe zone. We use baby gates (one across the kitchen door, one across the stairs) - could that help you - both with toilet training and with the chewing?? I guess I think of him as a toddler - it's just not worth seeing if he'll get up to mischief if he's is a room without me - I just assume he will!!

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2017 14:32

Haha towel. It's that menacing puppy quiet. Grin

Soubriquet · 03/07/2017 14:59

That's the thing. We have baby gate on the living room door so she has to be in with us at all times.

But when I've got her, 2 year old and 4 year old going on, I lose track of one of them and it usually is the dog...and she's doing something she shouldn't.

But like I said the stairs is all blocked off now the little rat bag

towelpintpeanuts · 03/07/2017 15:47

Ah, yes, didn't realise your kids were so young. Yup, I'd be loosing track of at least 2/3 in that scenario ;-) My two humans are 13 and 11 and I still think I've got my hands full with a pup too ... I am, frankly, in awe of you now for not totally loosing your marbles!

BiteyShark · 03/07/2017 15:57

I have no children so god knows how all of you that have keep going with a puppy. I would be hitting the Wine Grin

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2017 16:10

Bitey can you see me?!Grin
My youngest is now 8 so not too bad. Still the early weeks were hard going. Pup very bitey and couldn't be around kids off lead!

towelpintpeanuts · 03/07/2017 16:44

Dh asked if I was still tracking my drinking on my app (I was doing it as part of a weightloss/heath track thing) and I had to admit that I'd stopped measuring when the towelpup came along! We opened a bottle of wine last night to celebrate him being a star at a busy NT property last night!!

BiteyShark · 03/07/2017 16:47

Haha I had hoped I would lose weight with all the dog walking but given that I started comfort eating to cope with the puppy behaviour and haven't stopped I have gained instead Blush

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2017 16:48

I've just finished a pack of peanut m and Ms. I really fancy a glass of wine tonight. Again!

SkeletonSkins · 03/07/2017 21:16

Soub the chewing will stop, it really will, it's definitely a thing at that age.

Pease has returned in the Skeleton house. Dogs are back to playing and bounding up and down together. There's no way I can separate them when we're out as they'd totally pine for each other, they snuggle up together etc. So I'm hoping it was just a spat as it seems to be. It seems to have put the pup in his place actually - he's been good as gold ever since and was so brill at puppy class that we got moved up to the next class!

Yokohamajojo · 04/07/2017 09:30

Yes wine definitely help Smile we had an interesting walk yesterday, Yokopupteenager went to sniff at the yucky stream and lost his footing and fell head first in and had to swim Shock he hates being wet and oh dear he was miserable. Do dogs also get the teenage clumsiness?

We have tried to get him to swim in more appropriate places and he flatly refuses ha ha

BiteyShark · 04/07/2017 10:16

Mine used to hate water until he was 'encouraged' to swim by other dogs in the river. Now he throws himself into any bit of water he can find.

I was quite pleased with BiteyDog today. We met some off lead dogs this morning and I have been calling him back and putting him on the lead normally to stop him running off to every dog he sees. Today he spots them and runs back to me to wait to see if I gave the go ahead for him to approach them and play.

Wolfiefan · 04/07/2017 13:21

SHE DID IT!!!! SHE BLOODY DID IT!!
Waited. Down and wait whilst I walked round the outside of the circle of all the other dogs at training. We've never managed it before. So stupidly proud. And she knew it! Grin

BiteyShark · 04/07/2017 13:42

Awww good WolfiePup Grin

Yokohamajojo · 04/07/2017 14:52

Well done Wolfie pup!!

towelpintpeanuts · 04/07/2017 15:31

yay - well done Wolfiepup and biteypup! It does feel almost like magic when they do something you want!!

Towelpup is off at work with Dh today as I've got quite a bit on and secondary settling day for my youngest ... and I've felt really weird all day - I keep looking for him by my feet!

Wolfiefan · 04/07/2017 15:35

We are off on holiday without pup in August. I'm looking forward to a lie in but also secretly dreading leaving her. (May drive to the place she's staying then refuse to leave and spend the week on the farm with her!)
I know the wait thing seems little. A couple of months ago I couldn't take more than a step away. Even a few weeks ago wait entailed me leaving her to be held by the trainer, walking away saying wait and praying this wouldn't be the week she pulled him off his feet. Grin
Doesn't mean she will do it next week mind! Grin

BiteyShark · 04/07/2017 15:50

Wolfie you have to take the small victories as they come otherwise it woudn't feel like all that hard work was worth it.

towel I have been at home when DPup was at daycare and the house feels so empty when they aren't with you so I know what you mean.

Wolfie we had a trial run where he went into boarding for 5 days earlier in the year and it was awful. I really missed him much more than I expected. I did get frequent pics of what he was getting up to which was nice but it was hard. He will be going again for a lot longer so hoping I cope a bit better. I know he had a great time as he got to spend it with the person who normally looks after him as well as other dogs and children but he was a bit out of sorts for a couple of days when he returned which I wasn't prepared for. Think he was a bit put out with the upheaval (or he was saying he liked the other place better Hmm Grin)

Wolfiefan · 04/07/2017 16:06

Oh don't Bitey! We can't do a trial really. She's not staying locally. As she is a pup and won't be neutered until she's an adult she can't go to a kennels. She's actually going to stay with a friend of mine who has several wolfhounds and lives on a farm. But she's miles away. Sad
Trust me I take my victories where I can with this one!! Grin

BiteyShark · 04/07/2017 16:16

I actually think they have a great time on their holiday whereas we spend ours thinking about them Grin. I am sure WolfiePup will be just fine especially with more wolfs to play and run about with.

SkeletonSkins · 04/07/2017 22:46

Awwwww well done Wolfiepup and Biteypup! We're growing up!! Clever puppers.

We're leaving ours this weekend Sad luckily a friend is coming and spending the whole weekend here so I'm sure they'll love it as its constant attention but pup has only met this person a few times and he's very attached to his mum and dad Blush I worry that he's going to be so confused!

Older dog is an old hand, he doesn't care if we're here or not!

No other issues today and pup was super friendly to everyone and everything at training. He also was friendly to my mum st the weekend in the house. Hopefully progress.
