Here's our new addition who joined us yesterday. So far he's been excellent. He did cry a little when put to bed in his crate last night and then again at 6 am. He was very pleased to see me this morning.

Our 2 year old dog is delighted with him and won't leave him alone. Pup is a little bit scared of him at the moment although he is beginning to play a little. Just taken senior dog down the beach for a run to give them both a break and now both are fast asleep.

Sorry blue don't know why I read it that he was eating double Grin, I did think that's a lot Grin

Welcome iPhone, look forward to hearing about your pup when they arrive.

BestIsWest very cute Grin

iPhoneAddiction · 09/07/2017 20:27

I've taken the kids to visit our puppy again today. We've had lots of snuggles and she is now starting to be a little playful.

Put a puppy mat down near us and twice she pottered over to it for a wee. So looks like she is getting the hang of toilet training.

Excited to get her home. I need to do a list of what we 'need' to buy for her and a list of 'optional extras'.

If anyone wants to direct me to a list I'd be super grateful.

Wolfiefan · 09/07/2017 20:30

Something safe to travel in.
Collar and lead and legal tag.
Book in for vet check and puppy classes.
Ensure you know when flea and wormer due.
Food. Same as breeder for now.
Bowls.
Crate if using one.
Bed. We use vet fleece.
Poo bags and lots of cleaning stuff.
Toys and nylabone type stuff to chew.
Don't use puppy pads. They just teach pup to go indoors.

Wolfiefan · 09/07/2017 20:31

What have I forgotten folks?!

BiteyShark · 09/07/2017 20:35

iPhone some of the things I found useful to buy; poo bags, lots of kitchen towels for the accidents, baby gate, crate, playpen, baby monitor to watch him at night because he slept in different room, collar and lead to get them used to it, bed, toys and things to chew on, carrier so I could carry him to puppy parties and vets without putting him on the floor before his vaccinations, food and drink bowls. I am sure there are other things but this is a what I remember buying initially that I used.

BiteyShark · 09/07/2017 20:39

Yes as Wolfie mentioned about puppy pads. Some people swear by them but it can confuse some puppies as you are effective saying it is ok to pee/poo inside. Personal choice but I didn't use them as I wanted the message to be clear that outside was the only thing to do.

Wolfiefan · 09/07/2017 20:41

When I brought pup home I put her straight in the garden and she went then. I think that helped.
A torch for night garden visits. I slept next to big pup for 3 weeks. Plan night time arrangements.

BiteyShark · 09/07/2017 20:44

Ah yes I have forgotten about head torches for the night time toilet breaks. Fortunately won't need mine now until winter when it seems to be dark forever Grin

Wolfiefan · 09/07/2017 20:50

Madam came home 1st December. UK winter. We had a LOT of dark toilet trips! Grin

iPhoneAddiction · 09/07/2017 21:16

You are all a massive help thank you. I hadn't thought of a head torch and just assumed puppy pads were the way to go with toilet training.

I already have a crate, and plan to put her bowls in there and a bed. Am I better to leave the rest clear for if she has a wee in the night?

Once she's settled and a little older I'll then be leaving the crate door open at night so she has free run of the kitchen.

Wolfiefan · 09/07/2017 21:21

Dog training advice and support is a great group on FB. They have great advice on puppies and first nights. You can't just put a pup in the crate and go off to bed for the night! Crate training takes time and pup will need to go outside at night.

BestIsWest · 09/07/2017 21:21

Don't leave space in the crate for her to have a wee or she will think it is the thing to do.
At least that's what we were advised by our breeder last time round.

BiteyShark · 09/07/2017 21:24

iPhone in the first days I took pup out when he was restless/cried at night. After he had settled in to his new home I worked on the principal that he could hold his wee for 1 hour per month of age plus 1, so a 3 month old pup could hold for max of 4 hours so I set an alarm and took him out before he needed to pee.

Some puppies can hold their pee for most of the night but mine couldn't (I know because I forgot to set an alarm once and he didn't bark or whine). I tried to make sure he never had to pee in his crate so he didn't start to associate that it was an ok place to go. This method meant I was tired getting up frequently in the night until he got older but it worked for me.

thesunwillout · 10/07/2017 08:49

Hi all not been well and this dropped off my threads list. I look forward to reading up on all your tails Wink
Teething is still ongoing my dog is 23 weeks. Slightly worried the baby upper canines are still sitting next to the adult ones. She's a jrt X. The silly crocodile snap is still happening too. Tried everything to not encourage it. But with a pup that's playing one min then lunges it's hard.
She'll greet and lick then do this stupid teeth snap. It's got to the stage where I have to keep my head and face totally away from her. When all she wants to do is bounce up and give a lick, so now it's a thing where we are both wary sadly.
Gonna phone vets this week about spaying.
Anyhow will try and catch up with you all xx

thesunwillout · 10/07/2017 08:50

It was meant to be a happy wink face sorry!

BiteyShark · 10/07/2017 13:57

Welcome back thesunwillout. Do you have any vet check up appointments due soon to check his teeth? I think I would get them to have a quick look to see if the baby teeth need removing in case they cause issues with the adult teeth.

SkeletonSkins · 10/07/2017 19:13

Hello all, nice to see familiar faces and hear from new ones. Glad you are reaching the other side Bitey as it gives me hope 😂

Amazing achievement Soub at the show! Lots of lovely rosettes to show off.

How is bluepuppy doing now?

Agreed that broken sleeps are a necessity with young pups if you don't want to encourage arguments. They do pass though.

Well this weekend just gone we had a friend coming to look after the dogs as we were away at a wedding and I was beside myself with worry - would they behave, would the pup bark continuously at this girl for 3 days, would he eat, etc etc and I need not have worried at all - it went really well. We really seem to be getting past this phase and he's returning to the confident pup that he was. He loved our friend and was cuddled up in minutes and although he was glad to see us (and I him) he managed no problem for the weekend which is reassuring to know.

You really get to a point where you think 'I'm going to have a nightmare dog now for the rest of his life' and you forget to see the things that are going well. Puppy class tonight, where we have moved up to the bigger class so new dogs and new people. Let's see how he gets on!

BiteyShark · 10/07/2017 19:35

Good luck at the new class Skeleton and glad he was good whilst you was away. Must have been a relief when you got back to see things had been fine. It's a real rollercoaster of emotions for them and us Grin

We still have a way to go but he is definitely not as wayward as he was a month or two ago. He still runs a fair distance away on our walks but now he keeps 'checking in' with me and I give him a reward for coming back. I also think our relationship has changed for the better since I started playing games with him where we both try and steal tennis balls from each other. I think he saw me as someone who just 'fed and trained' him but now we also have 'fun' together.

thesunwillout · 11/07/2017 11:47

Hi we don't but I have to enquire about spaying so they might look at her teeth when she's under.

Wolfiefan · 11/07/2017 12:01

That seems very young to spay. Big girl can't be done until she's 2!!!!
We survived the nail trimming. Well about 4 nails trimmed the tiniest bit. Back next week!
We have eye drops and bloody expensive tablets. Likely allergy.

Yokohamajojo · 11/07/2017 12:41

My handsome pup had his first hand strip today at the groomers, he was very well behaved and look very smart for the summer ahead Smile

Yoko very handsome :)

Wolfie glad to see you in one piece after the nail trimming. Did she cope ok?

Captainladder · 11/07/2017 13:57

Hi All! Just checking in to say hello... we've had pup for almost a week now and it seems to be going well. Thanks again for all the great advice pre pup! At the moment he is sleeping in his crate in our bedroom and DH has been a saint and done all the night wee shifts! Seems to wee around 2 and then 5.30 ish though today he slept through till 6.30. Thats more of a lie in than we get with DS1! He's had his first vaccination at the vets and due next one in 4 weeks. In the meantime we are playing in our garden after meal times (also poop time LOL) and then a few times a day so that outside isnt just for wee/pooping. Hes on 3 meals a day.... anyone know how long they stay on 3 meals for? Going to catch up on posts now...

BiteyShark · 11/07/2017 14:30

Captain sounds like things are going well. My pup stayed on three meals until he was 6 months old but to be honest around a month before we cut him down to 2 he was tending to eat less in the mornings and lunch time so it was fairly easy to remove a meal time.
