Unwanted dog mating, prevent pregnancy?

My boyfriend has two dogs, a bitch rottweiler and a pedigree Belgian malinous, the bitch is two and a half and in season. He stupidly let them out together as he thought the dog was too young at 9 months to lock on to her.

As it happens he has. Obviously it is not a good idea to cross those breeds and the pregnancy won't be going ahead. Is yhe really a way to prevent a pregnancy like the morning after pill for dogs?

He is going to ring around the vets and see if there is one open today.

Get her spayed? Sorts out any future problems that way.

That was my exact opinion, he said he was planning to keep them seperated during season but thought they would be OK this time as the pup is young still.

I imagine the vet will suggest spaying as it will just take it away and you won't have to worry in future

Yes there is a morning after pill for dogs. Best to get to vets ASAP. I think it's two injections twenty four hours apart. What point in season is she at?

And yes, not easy having two in same household, almost impossible to watch. Best to get one done.

He's got two options really. One is the mismate jab (Alizin) which will be two injections 24 hours apart. It's got very high efficacy if given before day 45 post mating.

The other option is an emergency spay which is obviously quite a major op but absolutely guarantees an end to any potential pregnancy.

If he goes for the jab he does need to be watchful for her coming back into season early so she doesn't get caught again.

I didn't realise you could spay during pregnancy. Will she be out of action for awhile afterwards? She is a working dog.

I will suggest the injection also, he is at work at the moment but trying to ring and find an open vet for tomorrow when they finish.

The mismate jab is most effective when given once the season has finished so if he goes for that option the dogs must be kept properly separated until then.

Given the dog has shown he's not only keen but surprisingly capable for such a young dog I'd be looking to send him off somewhere until the bitch's season is over. He mustn't underestimate how determined a dog can be to get to an in season bitch.

It's a situation I wouldn't want to be dealing with anyway, he will need eyes in the back of his head. Seems spaying would be the best option.

Vets have asked to call back tomorrow as it is emergency only at the moment.

There is a recovery period post-spay of a couple of weeks during which exercise needs to be reduced so she would need some time off.

It's not a case of needing eyes in the back of his head, the dogs must be kept absolutely separate until he's 100% sure her season has finished. He should be using an "air lock" type system (always two doors between the dogs so if one nips through when a door is opened they're still separated) as an absolute minimum.

He should also be aware that this may make the Mal harder to handle if he's exposed to bitches in season in the future.

Find a vet that will do a Laproscropic spay. It's keyhole surgery and the recovery time is much less

What work is she doing? If it's anything that has her out and about, it's a bit irresponsible for her to be doing it while in season.

Dogs can smell a bit in estrus from miles away and will jump fences and run across roads and fields to get to her

Can I just point out that neither of these are my dogs and I have only come here to ask because I have had lots of helpful friendly support with my own pet dog which has been done. I am not irresponsible here.....

She is a security dog working on empty site so not out and about in public. I personally know nothing about dogs and their reproducing habits hence why my own dog was done when I got him.

I feel this bitch and dig are going to suffer ss a result of his stupid and selfish behavoiour. Thisbis a horrible awful thing for a bitch to go through and is not fair on either to keep unneutered pair together like this. Who IS this idit. Sounds like he's only considering his own needs here withoit any thought for the reality of what harm he could be causing potentially to both especially during mating with youngster like this. You sure he doesnt want pups to make some money from?

The air lock system can work but its still very unfair on entire boy who could literally worry hjmself sick wheneber bitch in heat nearby now

The 'morning after' pill will sort it but given bitch is the older one and being left to do security work is always going to be at risk from any entire boy (can drive the neutered to distraction too) spaying would be the far kinder option here

I will show him this thread tomorrow when they finish work. I genuinely didn't realise how much of a problem two intact dogs could be, I assumed you just kept them seperated during season.

She isn't left to do security though, he is with her at all times, they patrol together. I meant empty as in the employees and public aren't there.

Its the bitch that needs protecting but she could still happily mate after spay which can cause damage. Its all quite risky now this has happened.

Shriek, I really am clueless can you explain the risks to me please, if she is spayed and ends the pregnancy (if there is one) is there a risk of damage forever more or just while she is healing?

Well, no it isn't, really!

But I don't believe he doesn't want pups. Why would he keep an unspayed bitch otherwise?
