help with dog dye? I think we've been lied to

Our dog groomer moved country and sold her business, we got another dog and we get both groomed, one dog the groomer said would be great for grooming shows, that the dogs have fun and that she'd love to dye the dogs hair, it's safe, not harmful to the dogs fur etc and I did some research and found that using some methods like food colouring can work and it's not harmful.

So last week she got her fur dyed and the groomer said it was a L'oreal product I randomly thought to see how expensive it was as she isn't charging extra.

I can't find any L'oreal products for dogs and a family member said she used crazy colours before which after googling seems like it is semi perm inane for humans.

We've been lied to haven't we? And now I don't know if the 2-3 times its been done will have harmed the dog. Can anyone enlighten me? I'm really angry about this

The skin may not be irritated but the dog may be.

You know they're colour blind, right?

sparechange · 29/06/2016 20:43

Geraldine,
There are loads of things that are totally safe for humans but potentially fatal for dogs - onions, chocolate, ibuprofen, for example

I wouldn't make the assumption that dyes wouldn't contain a chemical compound which could be irritating or harmful to dogs.

The easy way around this would be not dye a dog

Is this your dog?

Why would anyone dye a dog? Even with a cast iron gaurantee that the dye was safe (and it doesn't sound like this is the case here) what on earth purpose does this serve? Does anyone imagine that this is what a dog would choose, given the chance? I don't often get riled up by a thread on MN but this is pretty bloody awful.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 29/06/2016 20:52

I might dye my cats. What could go wrong?

downright · 29/06/2016 20:53

This is quite normal for horses.

I don't see the harm.

OutsiderInTheGarden · 29/06/2016 20:55

Geraldine there are things that are completely harmless to humans, but toxic to dogs. Chocolate, grapes, garlic... perfectly harmless sounding things. So I imagine that lots of the nasty chemicals in hair dye (which you might even be advised to avoid in pregnancy, so possibly not even 100% 'safe' for us) could potentially be dangerous to dogs.

Catzpyjamas · 29/06/2016 20:56

Reasons not to dye your dog for anyone else now considering it.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 29/06/2016 20:57

Why? To match the owners nails, of course.

Ruhrpott · 29/06/2016 20:59

Or their car

Grin at dog botherer CM calling dyeing a bit of hair "psychologically damaging" for a dog.

I really don't think he's the best judge of that sort of thing!!

Wow. This is horrible, and quite possibly the tackiest thing I've seen in a very long time, at least since the last episode of Gypsy Wedding. I learn something new every day here on MN!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 29/06/2016 21:04

My dog has naturally ombre ears. She's all white with ginger ears. I hope people don't think I dye them!! Shock

Floggingmolly · 29/06/2016 21:04

Do you have a secret desire to join the circus, op? That's the only place I've ever seen a pink poodle and I never want to see one again

FeckinCrutches · 29/06/2016 21:05

Dip dyed the dog? Crying with laughter Grin

Just to reiterate I didn't want it.

Why on earth did you have it done then? She can't force you to have it done.

Jubaloo442 · 29/06/2016 21:14

This is the funniest thing I've read all day. Thank you, OP.

insertimaginativeusername · 29/06/2016 21:19
