help with dog dye? I think we've been lied to

Our dog groomer moved country and sold her business, we got another dog and we get both groomed, one dog the groomer said would be great for grooming shows, that the dogs have fun and that she'd love to dye the dogs hair, it's safe, not harmful to the dogs fur etc and I did some research and found that using some methods like food colouring can work and it's not harmful.

So last week she got her fur dyed and the groomer said it was a L'oreal product I randomly thought to see how expensive it was as she isn't charging extra.

I can't find any L'oreal products for dogs and a family member said she used crazy colours before which after googling seems like it is semi perm inane for humans.

We've been lied to haven't we? And now I don't know if the 2-3 times its been done will have harmed the dog. Can anyone enlighten me? I'm really angry about this

You can't ask for only serious answers alongside posting a picture of a bright pink poodle!

GremioGiellini · 29/06/2016 19:58

It is my dog ( not the picture posted that was off google) , I do walk it the way it's done isn't too noticeable thankfully, but even if it was fully dyed it would still be walked even though I think it would look silly because why would it suffer from something it hasn't done? It's not been done several times, and I'm against the concept but after being told for months it's safe and googling and finding out it can be safe. I begrudgingly relented to pressure for a small amount on the ears. But if the method I think based on weak evidence ( a family member saying I think she said she used them products or it sounded like that) is correct then it reinforces my belief that it's wrong and apart from find another groomer I don't know what else I can do

Seriously? Grin

Do you really think Loreal make dog hair dye. Even if it did why would it be any better than any other sort of dog hair dye?

Wolfiefan · 29/06/2016 20:00
  1. Ask the groomer what was used.
  2. Speak to your vet.
  3. Stop dying the poor bloody dog.
Costacoffeeplease · 29/06/2016 20:02

Who on earth allows someone to dye their dog FFS? I bloody hope this is someone's idea of a 'joke' or are you always this stupid and gullible?

TrionicLettuce · 29/06/2016 20:04

I don't know why you didn't just find a different groomer when this one badgered you for months to do something you didn't agree with.

Obviously the time to question what products would be used was before you agreed the groomer could do it.

I would imagine the damage inappropriate products could potentially do would be to the skin/hair and would be obvious fairly immediately. If it's been done and the dog is fine then I doubt any damage has been done.

Just find a decent groomer who isn't obsessed with dyeing dogs.

Jackie0 · 29/06/2016 20:05

Also you need to be assertive in situations like that .
You didn't want to get the dog dyed but gave in because you were told it was safe , so what it's safe ?
You didn't want the dog dyed
You must be a salesperson's dream .

TheHobbitMum · 29/06/2016 20:05

This is a wind up isn't it 👀

If you are serious you need to get the box the 'groomer' has been using and take your poor dog & box to the vet. Hopefully your dog is OK and the vet can let you know what a completely stupid idea this is!

buckingfrolicks · 29/06/2016 20:06

You decide to dye bits of your dog, and you're blaming the salon?

If you think they misled you then go back and complain.

But for gods sake don't use your dog as a doll like this. It's s living being. Please respect it.

Blistory · 29/06/2016 20:07

Mate, it's not just the method that's wrong in this sorry tale.

Anyway - have you checked the dog's skin for any sign of a reaction ? Any redness or swelling ? If he/she is okay, then be grateful that the consequences weren't any worse and promise yourself and the dog that you won't be so weak about protecting her/him in future.

GremioGiellini · 29/06/2016 20:13

Hmm thanks to those that gave proper answers,I'm gonna leave the thread as I don't find this a laughing matter and I'm annoyed about it so not finding the jokes funny, I'm aware MN don't delete threads unless they are identifying, and this isn't, it's just not being taken seriously/ helping out with what I can do. I put too much trust in the new groomer the old one trusted with her business, the old groomer was excellent. I'm gonna have to get in contact with the groomer and find out what's what. Just to reiterate I didn't want it.

So enjoy the thread I made because I needed to have a serious talk with people and thought there may be groomers on MN that could provide further info. Make your jokes etc and yes I do somewhat deserve to be flamed because I was too trusting, but it's not what I came onto this section for and is not helpful to me

I'm a vet. If the dog's skin and hair looks normal, not red or sore or itchy where the product has been applied, if the dog doesn't have sore or teary eyes and is eating and happy and otherwise appears normal to you, then I think it's very unlikely that any damage has been done. If you're not sure, then take your dog to your own vet.
I would give your dog a good wash and just not go back to that groomer.

MajesticSeaFlapFlap · 29/06/2016 20:15

Hang on

Sorry are you saying you gave your dog ombre ears?!

GremioGiellini · 29/06/2016 20:16

Trionic and Blistory I already checked her skin and it seems fine no irritation but I was thinking long term effects

GremioGiellini · 29/06/2016 20:19

Thank you Villainousbrodmare everything When I checked it seems fine and she's been acting normal. I plan on giving her a good wash but it's not been warm here for her to dry quickly and not get a chill.

Oh my fucking God
You dyed your dog and you have the gall to have a pop at people for not being helpful enough?
What the actual fuck?
Stop dying your poor dog.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 29/06/2016 20:20

I must not laugh.
I must not laugh.
I must not laugh.

That poor dog.
What the fuck possessed you to do such a thing?

exWifebeginsat40 · 29/06/2016 20:22

I don't think we can help, OP, unless you tell us what sort of dog it is and what colour you've had it dyed.

I have pink hair and use Directions and its vegetable dye and safe and holy god don't dye your DOG!

TallulahTheTiger · 29/06/2016 20:24

I'm still confused- it was done even though you didn't want it??

villainousbroodmare · 29/06/2016 20:25

I imagine that OP will not in future allow an over-enthusiastic groomer with too much time on her hands to ombre her pooch's ears.

Wolfiefan · 29/06/2016 20:26

I also don't get why you had it done when you didn't want it done!? Confused
Poor dog.

Thisismyfirsttime · 29/06/2016 20:27

Find out exactly what she used. If it was Crazy Colour (or any other vegetable dyes, Manic Panic, Stargazer, Directions) it will be very very unlikely to do the dog any harm or irritate the skin at all. They contain no harsh chemicals and do not affect the condition of your hair at all. The bleaching process you would use to get them to 'stick' is where the damage happens but if the hair is naturally light they will show up but have less longevity. If she has used a vegetable dye it's very likely to run when wet and stain like a bastard so watch out for that. I'm not aware of L'Oreal doing any vegetable dyes though, so I'd be very wary of that and demand to know what she's used asap.
I've 'dyed'/ coloured my dog's white patch many many times and it's caused no ill effects whatsoever!

GeraldineFangedVagine · 29/06/2016 20:30

But how likely is it that a product that's safe for humans would be harmful to a dog? Aside from the madness of dying a dog, I can't see that it would be that dangerous if safe for humans. Poor old dog. What colour did it end up?

Owllady · 29/06/2016 20:31

Has it helped the dogs self esteem?
