help with dog dye? I think we've been lied to

Our dog groomer moved country and sold her business, we got another dog and we get both groomed, one dog the groomer said would be great for grooming shows, that the dogs have fun and that she'd love to dye the dogs hair, it's safe, not harmful to the dogs fur etc and I did some research and found that using some methods like food colouring can work and it's not harmful.

So last week she got her fur dyed and the groomer said it was a L'oreal product I randomly thought to see how expensive it was as she isn't charging extra.

I can't find any L'oreal products for dogs and a family member said she used crazy colours before which after googling seems like it is semi perm inane for humans.

We've been lied to haven't we? And now I don't know if the 2-3 times its been done will have harmed the dog. Can anyone enlighten me? I'm really angry about this

Oh Jesus please stop so funny Grin did it help the dogs self esteem? Brilliant

exLtEveDallas · 29/06/2016 21:30

We dyed the MuttDog once for halloween. She's black and white - we coloured the white bits orange.

She looked ace. But DH refused to walk her for a couple of weeks.

We'll do her green next time.

TheDisreputableDog · 29/06/2016 21:32

Ruhrpott I really, REALLY want a panda dog now Grin

LilacInn · 29/06/2016 21:34

When I was a child in the 1970s/80s I recall one aunt with a white toy poodle would have him dyed - green for St. Patrick's Day springs to mind. Red & green for Christmas, pink for Valentine's, orange for Halloween.

Dog led a long and happy life.

I wouldn't dye a pet but don't think it's heinous, either. Some people like a touch of whimsy in their lives.

sparechange · 29/06/2016 21:45

This is quite normal for horses

Err no it bloody well isn't. Clipping them is normal, and for their benefit. Putting s bit of tinsel around their brow and at Hallowe'en is normal.

Other than putting black hoof oil on their hooves or white chalk/baby powder on their white bits after they roll on grass and get green stains, I've never ever heard of anyone dying a horse.

Think of how much foil you'd need, for starters

Hoppinggreen · 29/06/2016 21:52

"Safe" has got fuck all to do with it, it's just bloody stupid!!!
Dogs are not fashion accessories that need to match your handbag or whatever.
Dressing them in clothes is bad enough, I saw a Yorkie in a denim skirt and a hoodie the other day but dying them???!!!!!

BikeRunSki · 29/06/2016 21:52

This is a thing. There is a dog "salon" in my village. I have seen dogs coming out of there all sorts of colours and patterns. Mostly poodles, and mostly pink. There is a lot of pink in that shop. I had to go in once to return some misdelivered post. It was scary (I am pretty low maintenance) . Fortunately for her BikeCat is tabby, so I don't think she'd dye well.... and she takes to shit from anybody

Blistory · 29/06/2016 21:53

What do you mean it's not normal for horses ? Don't all horses look like this ?

ImBrian · 29/06/2016 22:43

I once tinted my dog lilac when I washed him with my purple shampoo!

NewIdeasToday · 29/06/2016 22:47

Thank god for this thread. I've been so bored with all the Brexit threads on here recently. And this has just made me sit and laugh.

I don't even like dogs, but now I really want a Panda Dog!!

OP - sorry things didn't go as you wanted with the groomer. Maybe you can use this as an opportunity to develop some assertiveness skills. For your dog's sake, if not your own.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 29/06/2016 22:58

Hang on, those pandas were actually real, weren't they?

insan1tyscartching · 29/06/2016 23:03

I know it's really not the done thing but I would love to dye Eric purple, dh would never allow it though he moans about me dressing him up.

Pantsalive · 29/06/2016 23:21

Wow, that was a really exciting diversion. Who knew?! (Dog clipped and dyed to look like the whole cast of a Disney cartoon anyone?)

In the course of my research, I have discovered that you can get special pet dyes which are listed as non-toxic. However, all the ones I've seen seem to be in the US, so I'm not sure if that is what the OP's groomer would have used.

If there is a whole scene of dyed pet shows, I presume there must be a dye that everyone uses.

Misnomer · 29/06/2016 23:29

This is the most I've laughed in ages Grin

exWifebeginsat40 · 29/06/2016 23:46

sorry, I don't think we've properly discussed pony fancy dress. do you dress the pony as a vicar and wear suspenders and a basque?

exWifebeginsat40 · 29/06/2016 23:47

because trying it the other way round seems unnecessarily complicated.

sparechange · 30/06/2016 07:10

Exwife Pony fancy dress is usually a class in gymkhana at local shows
In my day it was putting a bit of tinsel around the bridle/putting gloves over their ears to make a reindeer/putting bunny ears on their bridle

These days, a bit more effort goes in and you can buy pony costumes, a bit like supermarket children's fancy dress. They come with a matching outfit for the child riding them as well
I have never seen a pony dyed as part of this though. Because dying animals IS REALLY REALLY WEIRD AND HORRIBLE

BigGreenOlives · 30/06/2016 07:24

My dogs are goths - black & shaggy. Should I try a dark plum shaders & toners wash on thrm?

RustyPaperclip · 30/06/2016 08:29

Hmmm, wondering how much my little girl cat will approve if I did this to her...Grin

downright · 30/06/2016 11:02

Oh there's loads of possibilities with pony fancy dress. The idea is to match pony and rider with some kind of theme. Obviously you will still need the pony to be able to move around.

BeckywiththeGoodHare · 30/06/2016 11:45

Are you the kind of idiot dog owner who takes the phrase 'toy poodle' a bit too literally?

A. Dog. Is. Not. A. Fashion. Accessory.

TrionicLettuce · 30/06/2016 11:46

Speaking of ponies, you could go for the ponydoodle look OP Grin

downright · 30/06/2016 12:06

What is the point of a dog if it's not a fashion accessory??

GremioGiellini · 30/06/2016 12:40

Just came back to say it's been said many a times about a dog being a fashion accessory, to go with handbags etc.

I'm a man with no handbags, and depression that means I can hardly leave the house so it's not like I go parading my dog, yes I walk it but it's more of a depressive malaise than a fashionista strut. In fact through counselling was the suggestion about getting a dog and I'm quite emotionally attached to it. and again I didn't really want the dog coloured but was pressured by the groomer and other family members that wanted it. I love the look of my dog without colouring, which is why I chose the dog I did

Jackie0 · 30/06/2016 13:58

Quite emotionally attached to it
Do you realise you are that dog's entire life ?
He loves you unconditionally .
He looks to you to take care of him ,make responsible decisions and to make his welfare a priority.
I would never refer to my dog as it or express my feelings for her as anything other than love.

You let your dog down and you can't even take responsibility for it .
People talked you into it ? Seriously you don't sound grown up enough to have this responsibility if you're so easily led .
Poor dog .
