They were living in rank cages outside on concrete floors. The smell was horrid. There was Dad and a Portuguese pointer in a cage, Mum was sooo skinny and looked as if she had been bred and bred. The pups looked healthy enough but the one remaining pup ( so I had no choice in selecting one for us) was shaking and whimpering. He was absolutely beautiful but I didn't take him. I felt awful. The pups were kept in a shed away from the other dogs and Mum. They were clearly not 'indoor' dogs. Very sad and don;t know what I can do.....Sad

I'm sure they would - although to be fair to them, they did settle down after the first 24hrs.

We are hoping to get Dig a canine pal soon Grin

How do you do it??

midori1999 · 14/03/2012 11:57

I am laughing my head off at 'hell hounds'... they couldn't even come close, they are the soppiest, loveliest Golden Retrievers...

D0oin, I don't have his direct number asctually, but he's always after mine... Grin

Flatbread, on an entirely more srious note... I'm not sure where you got the idea from to supplement your puppies diet at all, especially with goats milk and egg yolks, but it's actually quite an old fashioned idea and one that will not provide optimum nutrition for your puppies. A bitch's milk is absolutely the best thing for her puppies in terms of nutrition and for their immune system, in fact, immunity recieved from the bitch can be vital for your puppies. If the bitch is healthy and well then there is no need to supplement the puppies with anything and as her milk works entirely on a supply and demand basis then anything you give her in addition to this not only is a substandard replacement for her milk but will reduce her supply overall. If you felt the need to supplement (and there is no need) then there are specially designed puppy 'forumla' milks which are better than the goats milk and egg yolk, but nowhere near as good as the bitch's own milk.

Regarding the stats re: insurance and everything else re: pedigrees being less healthy than mutts... when you consider than over 90% of KC registrations are from puppy farmers, where a high incidence of inbreeding and breeding with no care for anything at all except making puppies to sell occurs, then on top of that the number of litters registered by BYB's, then the number of 'pedigrees' that aren't registered or registerable due to poor breeding practices that leaves only a very small number of responsibly bred pedigree dogs (in the scheme of things!). So I don't think we can place too much importance on such studies when responsibly and well bred pedigrees are worlds apart from those that are not.

Of course, if you have a study that only takes into account responsibly bred pedigrees and mutts and compares them healthwise, I'd be interested to see it...

? Boom!

I dont know why but I feel like I've actually achieved something there.

HollyRose6 · 14/03/2012 12:08

Hi all,

I have read this thread all the way through and have literally been falling off my chair laughing (not about the puppy farm bit, actually cried at that part) at all the mad things your dogs get up to.

I must confess I had a similar experience to allergic but I couldn't walk away. I went to this horrible place and was shown a Springer/cocker cross puppy lying in his own filth, trembling, his coat was falling out, he was unbelievably skinny and he was barely old enough to survive without his mum and I know I was wrong but there was no way that I could leave him there so I handed over the cash, picked him up and took him home. Took months to get him back to full health but he is now 3 and totally bonkers.

Had huge scare with him at Christmas. Literally 10 days before Christmas he starts being sick. He was still hungry but everything he ate came straight back up again. The vet did every test imaginable and couldn?t find anything. The poor dog was literally starving to death, it was horrific. On the 22nd the vet told me that I had to have him put down. I couldn?t do it so I went to another, this time specialist, vet in London and begged him to open him up and see if there was anything stuck somewhere. I think the poor vet only agreed because of how pathetic I must of looked. I?m a single mum and I just couldn?t stand the idea of losing my dog at Christmas. DS was only 18 months but he still knew something was wrong. Anyway they opened him up and found a bloody wine cork blocking the entrance to his stomach. They stitched him up and I got to bring him home late at night on Christmas eve. Cost me a fortune, thank goodness he was insured.

I?ve been off ill with a chest infection all week and he has not left my side, apart from when he went to bark at the postman and then decided to eat the bravissimo catalogue!

Have just checked back up the thread - apologies for not putting in the zero. Blush

swallowedAfly · 14/03/2012 12:28

bitter i saw a weiner for rescue on dogsblog the other day - may be worth going to their site and searching by breed. i'll have a look as i have the site open.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/03/2012 12:31

We nearly ended up taking on a wiemeraner last year - she'd been rehomed by her original owner to some friends of theirs, and it wasn't working out - the dh particularly was not getting on with the dog (and strangely the wife was considering rehoming the dog, not the husband - not sure I'd make the same decision). We said we'd have the dog, if she did need rehoming, but thankfully the situation improved massively, and the dog now has her paws well under the table there. I was a bit sorry we didn't end up with her - she's a beautiful dog - but if we had rehomed her, we wouldn't have ended up rehoming ddog2, and she is such a joy that that would have been a real pity.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 14/03/2012 12:31

I keep looking on the Many Tears site and thinking....And then I slap myself, because Jasper really is terribly hard work and there are only so many hours in a day.

MiseryBusiness · 14/03/2012 12:37

Me too Chickens, its probably a good thing we're not in the UK at the moment.

Fenwick looks amazing, I'd have him in a second!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/03/2012 12:38

And me, Chickens. According to a thing on fb yesterday, there's a yellow lab boy called Cody, at their rescue centre, who needs a home. I have tried to convince dh that we should sell one of the children, and have the full set of labs instead, but he is strangely reluctant. Confused

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/03/2012 12:44

I want to adopt Hoagie the beagle too.

Must.

Not.

Look.

Any.

More.

swallowedAfly · 14/03/2012 12:47

incidentally i bought a second hand leather sofa and chair to add to the living room yesterday. i have a huge sofa already and only 2 humans (one only 5) live in the house. i blatantly bought furniture for dogs Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/03/2012 12:49

Ooohhh and Juno, the rottie puppy.

Scuttlebutter · 14/03/2012 12:55

Actually yes, Greyhounds from Hell (I like that!!) would demand a mattress, in fact they'd insist on a proper pocket sprung mattress, high thread count sheets and an imp at the bedside to administer trays of roast chicken and do massages... Their satanic majesties would certainly not be happy with a plain bench - there might be splinters...

I now have this picture in my head of Midori lounging on a recliner, sort of like Princess Leia when she is the prisoner of Jabba the Hut, wearing an amazing saucepan lid bikini and surrounded by buff demons all waving fans and so on, with various Goldies scattered around trying to look menacing..
