How does rehoming a dog effect children?

LeoTheLateBloomer · 12/11/2011 10:58

DD is 18mo. She worships the dog (a 6yo lab), but I'm a lone parent and I just can't do it anymore. It's not fair on my poor dog that he always comes last in the pecking order and I've come to the (very difficult) decision to have him rehomed Sad.

The problem is my ex. I've given him the opportunity to say he'll have him, but he's in no position to do that. He has started saying that he's concerned about DD, that she'll lose the one constant in her life (Hmm), will forever be traumatised and never forgive me.

My argument has been that if I do it now, she'll forget him more quickly than if I leave it another year. (Not that I want her to forget about him completely, but she'll stop asking for him sooner.)

Could anyone reassure me that DD will cope? I was planning to take her away for a few days when it happens so that she's not waiting at home for him to come back.

Any advice would be most welcome. TIA.

Questioning the reasons for rehoming was not appropriate. It was patronising, dismissive and unkind, especially when expressed in the sanctimonious and holier than thou tone characteristic of so many posts on this thread.

Offering advice along the lines of dog sharing and vet bill assistance was practical, but 'a dog is for life and not for Christmas' is nothing more than heaping guilt on the head of someone who already has a lot on her plate.

I am not actually babbling about religion, but heyho.

'Starting arguments' and palling up?

You have too little experience here of disagreement obviously.
What's next -- the circling of the wagons? This is a clubby place.

Dita, read.

Oh dear, Math. You have painted yourself into a corner haven't you. Why don't you pop and ask the Dogs Trust the meaning of 'life'?

But Maryz, why are you the one to decide who's right?

It is my opinion that Math is not right.

KouklaMoo · 14/11/2011 18:34

This is hardly a 'clubby' thread though Math is it?

You know what this has turned into a complete and utter joke, people are just taking great pleasure in twisting peoples words, by nit picking at every fucking negative point, and totally ignoring any helpful comments. Its pathetic!.

This board is the "dog" house, the clue is in the title Hmm it is full of dog lovers! or so called dog lovers as you prefer to say, who are hardly going to support re homing a dog without a good reasons are they? problems with paying vets fees were sorted as was advice on how to stop the pulling. So people here think these are good reasons to re home a dog and putting extra strain on the already totally stretched rescues?, then so be it.

The OP chose to post here maybe she shouldn't have, but never the less she was given sound advice.

It was totally right to question if the OP was sure she was doing the right thing (or anyone considering re homing for that matter) have you not read the post on this thread where by people said they have regretted it?.

JKoukla, et al, Do you really find my opinions as alien as those of the MRA on Feminism? (this was stated far upthread)

If so, then the DH is a place where sanity should fear to tread.

3cutedarlings -- you really are suggesting that 'rehoming' and 'best interests of the dog' are never-the-twain-shall-meet propositions, aren't you? I am baffled as to how you can't see that the two can and should go hand in hand, for the benefit of the dog. Rehoming isn't one of the seven deadly sins no matter what you believe.

Problems with paying vets fees were 'sorted'?
hahahaha.
You have no idea if the OP ever looked into the vet fee assistance or if she qualified or if the assistance offered might have met her needs. Then there is the little matter of time and small house, and maybe no washing machine. Let's all wave a wand together and see what happens about all of that, shall we.

Questioning her decision to rehome was done on the basis that it offended the sensibilities of those to whom rehoming is unthinkable and who refused therefore to believe the OP when she said she knew she would be heartbroken, that there were insurmountable facts leading her to the conclusion she had reached. Moreso, the tone and accusations, especially wrt her relationship with her child, were way out of line. It was therefore completely inappropriate, on all counts.

3cutedarlings · 14/11/2011 19:02

Mary Am i reading this right, do you think that when people post here aabout wanting to re home for no good reason, that posters here should be all nicey nicey and not call them twats even tho they are? Confused.
