WhimBarWhey I’ve just come looking for this thread to say I feel the same!

The ending feels more cruel than the other seasons and that’s saying something for a show about a psychotic murderer.
He’s a murderer who has always tried to justify it though feeling the murdered somehow ‘deserved it’ yet the ending was just completely self fulfilling and egotistical. It’s left me uncomfortable.

I had a think about this and I think I'm guessing this part was carried out under the "Rhys" alter ego.

When he pushed him in the Thames I think that was supposed to kill him off, then in the hospital he was looking around and saying "No Rhys". He was also making a pact with Kate to be good together so I think we are supposed to assume he's going to stop killing and become normal.
But then he does that to Nadia and Ed and we see Rhys' reflection in the window when he's making coffee for Kate.

Ridiculous, although I did watch it all so can't have been that bad. Why didn't Nadia call the police? How on earth did Marianne's phone still have charge?

Call the police when?

Marianne begged her not to and once Marianne was gone she had no evidence of him doing anything wrong, which was why she went back to his flat and took the photos. To get evidence to go to the police.

If you think your tutor is a serial killer who has got away with it, and his ex girlfriend was locked in a box and had to fake her own death to get away from him, then you probably shouldn't be playing detective and going to his flat.🤷‍♀️

Flavabobble · 12/03/2023 13:24

Call the police when?
After the first time she sees her. I don't understand why she didn't phone them then. It's nonsense.

Proudofitbabe · 12/03/2023 14:53

Yeah it was stupid she didn't phone the police. As if Marianne would rather risk him getting some kind of soft sentence and a chance to find her again, as opposed to the much likelier outcome that she wouldn't get out at all!

Let's be honest how lucky was it Joe just dumped her "dead" body on a park bench, as opposed to every other victim that gets chopped up/buried in woods!

Piemam · 12/03/2023 15:42

The Rhys/ disassociation was too much, I think it got plain annoying as we are already privy to Joe's thoughts as his internal monologue. So to have a third outlook, if you will, was an overkill.

I'm glad Marienne got to live. But I do wonder if perhaps that might be fodder for season 5. I definitely see a new direction with the whole Kate set-up.

I felt for Nadia- so didn't want her to get caught. She was bright and promising and it's a shame she can't carry on somehow.

It is supposed to be high-octane, ridiculous drama, so once you suspend belief and follow the ride, it was compelling enough. But yes, quite distinct from series 1 to 3.

She's in prison not dead so she could come back 🤷‍♀️

Piemam · 12/03/2023 16:13

@happinessischocolate Yeah, I got that but I mean, she'll not want to tell the truth if it means Joe will be after killing her. She won't go back to prestigious Darcy College if she's a crim either.

Will there be another series?

Who knows - they've definitely left it open.

I also think it's weird that when Nadia found the article online about Joe and Love that she didn't just circulate it around the Uni. 100% that would have happened in RL and he'd prob be virtually unable to work out who started it.

meow1989 · 12/03/2023 16:46

For a series that was quite slow in general, I feel like the last half hour of the final episode was hugely rushed to tie things up.

Tonkerbea · 12/03/2023 21:21

So. Many. Plot holes.

I get that it's You, and a certain amount of silliness is to be expected, but it's like they've given up on a tangible story and went with a nonsensical Killer Made In Chelsea vibe.

Really disappointing, should have stopped at 3.

SpookyBlackCat · 13/03/2023 02:20

I didn’t mind the whole murder mystery/Made in Chelsea thing so much, but the whole Rhys mental break thing went on far too long and it got a bit annoying.

I guess if they do renew it then the new series will be about Nadia out of prison and trying to get revenge.

There were a million plot holes but it didn’t bother me that much. It’s always thought You was a dark comedy.

I wonder if the reason they split release was because the second half didn’t test well, so they were trying to edit it.

Piemam · 13/03/2023 08:55

Good point, @SpookyBlackCat I thought it was because, well, DRAMA! It wasn't cohesive in that sense and if we are to believe that Joe has fully gone bad now, that means his whole inner narrative thing is over, as much of it was him claiming to save people for their own good.

Namechangeforthis189 · 13/03/2023 09:22

If they do another series I really think it should be the last one and about Joe’s downfall.

I'd have Nadia out of prison and wanting revenge. She starts digging into Joe’s past and finds all the other people he’s wronged but are still alive. Dr Nicky, Ellie, the couple who escaped the box, maybe Love’s parents and then they all work together to take him down.

SpookyBlackCat · 13/03/2023 10:52

I think I might re-watch the last few episodes and see if I can’t understand it better.

I think part of the charm of You was that Joe was a ‘nice’ guy trying to do good things but somehow ended up making things worse and killing people. It had a sort of Mr Bean feel to it, but now it seems that Joe has lost his mind and now enjoys killing people for fun. It’s a big change. I’m not sure about it.

Yes and the inner narrative was what made him a watchable and sympathetic character despite the horrendous things he was actually doing. Now with the Rhys personality that totally changes things, Rhys kills because he's a pure villain whereas Joe killed to 'protect' those he loved, its a total shift and I don't think it works as well.

I don't mind a bit if a switch, we can't just have every series with Joe finding a new obsession and trying to get close but I think this is fundamentally changing his character. Make him slicker or more unhinged but don't make him Patrick Bateman .

Now he’s world famous and on the tv it would make sense for it to all start coming out of the woodwork but he is in a powerful position so not sure it would be that entertaining to watch?

Some interesting returns would be Paco who he was generally nice to but knew Joe had killed his mothers abusive partner for him, his ex Karen Minty and Theo and Matthew who we didn’t get a sniff of this season. Presumably the Quinn family have some clout still too, although can’t match the Lockwood money.

I don't really agree that Joe was ever a "nice" guy - he's an unreliable narrator who justifies his own actions and makes out he has no other choices. He's likeable but he is an obsessive stalker & murderer and always was. It's just in this series they've sort of laid it more bare.

Oh, no, he's not a nice guy at all, but I meant from his perspective he's a nice guy trying to help the person he's in love with and yet somehow he seems to always end up disposing of a dead body. This is the irony of the show because it shows how things that are often portrayed as romantic on TV shows or in movies are actually really creepy and disturbing. Like when he's looking in Beck's window watching her. We've seen that scene so many times in other films and shows, but then he starts masturbating and is almost caught.

But Joe's whole reason for being is that he's a nice guy trying to do good. His whole inner monologue was that he never wanted to hurt anyone. Now he's a bad guy who kills for fun? It's a big change!

LobeliaBaggins · 14/03/2023 12:46

God I hated this season. It beggars belief that smart Nadia would be stupid enough to not call the police and come up with that ridiculous plan? And it also beggars belief that Kate would overlook Joe's murky past and just skim over the murder of her dad. That's overlooking Joe's Rhys hallucinations too.

The script writers appear to have been on glue.

cornflakegeneration · 14/03/2023 21:34

I was going to say it's all going to go Pete Tong for him now he's in the public eye.... but then this sort of thing must happen all the time in RL. An "offender" of sorts rises to fame and then becomes untouchable due to being ludicrously rich.

Icecreamandapplepie · 15/03/2023 00:40

It went all mad didn't it!?

He's full blown serial killer now. All sympathies for him gone. Reckon next series will be dark.

SpookyBlackCat · 15/03/2023 03:39

I do wonder if they were uncomfortable that so many people liked Joe that they wanted him to become a less sympathetic character.

Here's what Penn Badgley said about future seasons:

"I signed a six-year contract right out the gate. So they could do two more if they wanted. I think if there’s another season, I think it’s only going to be one. I think–this is my understanding, but I don’t know, I really don’t know. But I know that everybody concerned, from the top on down, nobody wants this show to become tired."

Netflix can be weird about renewals and cancelations though.

LobeliaBaggins · 15/03/2023 08:15

I hated that they just made Joe into a psychopath. That way nothing he does has to make sense. I did think it was uncharacteristic the way he let go of Marianne but then the idea that he kept her in the box for weeks without remembering was ridiculous. Also how did he get her down there at all? And build the box?

I am hoping Ellie gets her revenge in the next series.

Lelophants · 15/03/2023 19:15

I think it’s the perfect time to end it now. If they did decide to do a season 5 I think if would only work if it was ten years into the future, perhaps Kate has aged and isn’t ‘perfectly beautiful’. Are they still in love after their powerful ten years? Henry is a teenager. Joe is basically John Lockward. How is their relationship and how far does he go to ‘protect’ his son. Does Henry try to find out more about his dad and then himself? Does he meet Juliette?
Nadia is also due release from prison. What’s it done to her?

She's from Tracey beaker.....but yes very disappointing not the sane vibe at all as previous seasons and joe was never that evil for what he did at the end! It's like they completely changed his character in a way.,,,,,,it was all a bit mmmmmmm

But what did Joe say to Phoebe??? I thought that was all going to mean something.
