I read a theory on reddit that the characters and story are so over the top and ridiculous because they're all a figment of Joe's imaginatiom or a hallucinating because he's still poisoned by the wolfsbane and he's not actually in London at all and Love has put him in the cage.
I thought this was a fun theory, but I've just watched the trailer for the second half and Love is there at the end!

mahrezzy · 23/02/2023 21:18

Definitely think Rhys is a figment of his imagination and Joe’s been doing all the murders. Think this season is terrible but also binged the whole lot.

MissJam · 23/02/2023 21:25

Ooooh interesting! I look forward to returning here to discuss the ending then!

But love died ?! Haven't watched the new season btw !

Ginevere · 23/02/2023 21:46

I figured out it was Rhys in episode 1, but having watched the finale I now have another theory entirely. I think Rhys isn’t involved at all and Joe is doing it all, but hallucinating Rhys in some weird attempt to absolve himself of blame and convince himself he’s a better man. A bit Fight Club basically!

I think he’s latched onto him after associating with his autobiography and at some point they will come face to face in real life and Rhys will have no clue what he’s talking about. I think the shots we saw of Joe committing the murders in episode 5 were exactly how it went down. Explains why the split it into two!

Alvinne · 23/02/2023 22:06

Did love definitely die though? Joe is quite an unreliable narrator. To be honest I think I'm clutching at straws because I haven't really liked this series and want a twist!

Yeah I think Rhys as a Tyler Durden character is a definite possibility. Joe seems to be the only one who interacts with him

Well I never, I never even gave that a thought! He really doesn’t interact with anyone else! 😯

Disappointed with the first half. It's always been a bit silly, but it's completely lost its way. Kate is particularly irritating, they've tried to make her wry and fleabag-esque, but completely missed the mark, and the stupid cliffhangers at the end of the episode are getting more absurd. I hope the second half brings some redemption!

Yes I saw the Fleabag thing as well. But just not as good! Like a Lidl version 😆

WhimBarWhey · 24/02/2023 09:10

Given this thread I might go back and rewatch it.

PureBlackVoid · 24/02/2023 09:53

I wasn’t too keen. I like what they’ve tried to do and have the tables turn on Joe but his character doesn’t suit being an actual ‘victim’. I much preferred it when Joe saw himself as a victim despite being an actual serial killer. I also didn’t buy the story of how he got ‘in’ with this crowd so quickly.

Plus when Kate revealed the truth about her dad/all the security for her I would have thought a random stranger would have been a red flag to them, and they’d have found out who was quite quickly. Especially after 2 of her friends turn up dead and the driver(?) missing, which no one seemed to notice!

I still binged the season, and I’ll watch part 2 the minute it drops though!

UpToonGirl · 25/02/2023 09:05

Yes, I'm hoping Rhys is just Joe's imagination but that also feels a little obvious, especially when he 'fell asleep' outside the gallery when the artist was murdered.

I'm just waiting on his narration "it was never YOU, it was always ME"

I like the theory he is having a fever dream in the glass cage after being poisoned. It would also explain the weak getting to Paris, being caught but released by the hit man, finding a job in London and getting caught up in a random serial killer friend group...

I am watching series 4 episode 4 now. It’s not getting any better. The actress that plays Kate is so wooden it’s ruining it. The portrayal of English people is a bit cringe. I think I will give up.

All of this! Really disappointed in this season - didn't find it was gripping at all - positively boring in parts.

ImaniMumsnet · 26/02/2023 15:44

Hi everyone,

Just to confirm - that's all done for you now

Good point, and he just turned up in the woods at the murder mystery night!

MissJam · 07/03/2023 09:49

Yes, I had wondered why he wasn’t at the house party… but only because I wanted to look at him 😂

louise5754 · 07/03/2023 10:22

Agree with PP is a completely different show.

I did not like Beck or Love. I hated their face expressions for some reason. I just couldn't look at them.

Marienne was just a really weird character. Why was he obsessed with her? They hardly had any interaction. Then again I suppose it all starts somewhere.

It's given be Made in Chelsea vibes.

I don't know why Phoebe and Roald kept asking Joe along. I mean why would they want some older lecturer they hardly know to go away with them.

Why wasn't he being little more discreet when looking at Kate? She was in Call the midwife but asking Ghosts and she's a totally different character. She plays that part well. I don't like her in this.

Joe doesn't seem as attractive in this series.
More geeky, isolated perv.

I'm so relieved he didn't try it on with Nadia.

WhimBarWhey · 09/03/2023 14:13

Just finished the second part. No spoilers but it's left me feeling angry.

Namechangeforthis189 · 09/03/2023 14:35

WhimBarWhey I’ve just come looking for this thread to say I feel the same!

The ending feels more cruel than the other seasons and that’s saying something for a show about a psychotic murderer.
He’s a murderer who has always tried to justify it though feeling the murdered somehow ‘deserved it’ yet the ending was just completely self fulfilling and egotistical. It’s left me uncomfortable.

WhimBarWhey · 09/03/2023 14:53

@Namechangeforthis189 Absolutely. Although I think I am most upset about how one of the character arcs ended as I believe they deserved better. Don't want to give too much away, hope other posters are along soon so that we can discuss it properly without spoilers!

Flavabobble · 10/03/2023 13:03

I've not finished it yet, mid-way through episode 9.
Very disappointed in this second half of the season, I don't care for this type of story line, seems so lazy and clichéd.
Will hate-watch 'til the end.
Half expecting him to walk out of the shower and it's all been a dream.

XelaM · 10/03/2023 16:02

Really not liking Season 4. Kaye is so unlikable and I really don't care what happens to her and we already know the killer, so what's the point 🤷‍♀️

XelaM · 10/03/2023 16:02

Kate*

XelaM · 10/03/2023 16:03

Kate is the most unlikable and unfunny of all his romantic interests. She also looks old and washed out
