Ep 2 - lovely couple. I'm not sure they would get all of their money back - that was a huge spend but the house was nicely transformed. I loved that Marston Green house -the one with the mezzanine- isn't that very close to Birmingham airport though?

I'm very surprised they said they were going to actually list it after 2 years of building work at a cost of £200k!

Although the last house Phil showed them was amazing tbh.

I know. They could have sold the house as it was and spared themselves all the hassle of the building work.

Selling and buying and moving aren't exactly hassle-free either and they've still got that to come.

Nice people, hope they find what they want.

I was really surprised they were going to list it after putting in all they wanted.
I guess the reality of kids leaving home suddenly hit, along with bad memories from the build lingering.

Was it in a good school catchment? Imagine it's a bugger to heat that big room in the current crisis but otherwise imagine it would be snapped up, given the room size and plot, all that parking space and still a decent back garden.

Just remembered one other thing. In the end, they got their 2 storey side extension. So I suppose they got planning permission for it afterall, as they didn't have when they started extending the downstairs 🤔

Just watched it. I felt quite sad for them, they squandered 2 years of their kids’ last years in the family home turning it into a stressful building site and were clearly traumatised by the whole experience. They could just have bought one of the houses Phil showed them and saved themselves the work.

Thing is once you start you can’t go back. Sure they would not have done it if they had known how long it would end up taking.

My biggest question about LIOLI is why do they pretend to be drinking from empty coffee cups when they sit down with the couple ? It just looks daft !! It looks like a child’s pretend tea party !!

I was so shocked they decided to list! IMO, they should have done Kirsty's smaller project with the addition of an en-suite (as they were upping the budget anyway) in the knowledge that within 6 years all kids would have finished school, at least one moved out and then they could have gone further afield to get more rural for their "retirement " home.

I guess the stress of such a large build with stop/starts due to Covid restrictions, lack of building materials and the rising costs took the shine off it - you probably can't look at it without remembering the pain. I can't imagine 3 kids being homeschooled in all that chaos!

I'm also so envious of how much house you get for your money compared to where I am in the South.

I too was shocked they decided to list the beautifully transformed house.
All that disruption.....
I felt they really didn't think it through. They will have more stress added to their lives - isn't a house move up there with death, serious illness and divorce in the list of life's stressors ?

Report
TerraNostra · 12/01/2023 07:18

They don’t have to list of course, nobody will hold them to what they told K&P!

There was an irony that having spent two years practically doubling the size of their house they now felt they didn't need so much space and were rattling around. It made me think that Kirsty's initial advice was good and they would have done well to heed it. They would have had a shorter build and ended up with a more usable space. I don't think bigger is always better - unless you are regularly hosting huge groups of people. Beyond the initial "Wow" - it's not necessarily the cosiest way to live. One thing I didn't understand, they said at the start the entrance porch was difficult for her mum to negotiate, but even after a £200,000 spend they still seemed to have a porch with the additional obstacle of steps.

@LillianGish
I thought that too about the porch - no improvement re access.

We were wondering whether gran accessed the house through the garage perhaps.

So they spent 2yrs building and as older ones leaving they said it's too big ffs

And originally it was £80/100 budget then go up to £180

Where the hell was the extra £100k from

Maybe the extra 100k has to be repaid now and the only way to get it back is to sell.....

I also didn't understand why they would do all that only to list at the end. The home was amazing.

As for Brian and Amy... I like to think that she is trying to make his last few years more comfortable with support around. I don't understand his illness - but it could be degenerative and she knows if they move he will want to do loads of work to make the new home his. Also what he wanted was a house in the middle of nowhere with field and land.....and they couldn't afford that/there aren't any. I like to think it was a genuine love match. ❤️

Totally insane!
I felt they got blown away with the viewings Phil arranged and then replicated those large spaces in their existing location because they could.

Living with builders for 2 years for a measly £20k increase in value is madness at best; you could sense the deep pain in the husband - he wants to walk away from the house and was v.relieved they hadn't lost money in the final valuation.

Yes! I said all of this to DH too when we watched it @LillianGish! Presumably they knew the kids were unlikely to stay at home long term and that porch was no better at the end. I did feel for them as the programme stated it was September 2022 when Kirstie and Phil were last there, if they didn't hot foot listing it I assume they didn't sell it for as much due to the market slowing right down. Also I really didn't like the front of the house at the end. The garage stook out like a sore thumb. 🤦🏻‍♀️
