And next week is a revisit

So means same programme for 45/50m. Then last few mins new

Oh I wonder why? Maybe they are running out of people with spare money to spend 🙄 Just a thought!

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/02/2023 22:45

They usually do revisits but I find them boring

The format is really suffering from the horrific increase in building costs. Before it was a case of being better to extend than move because house prices were moving so fast. But now there's no point doing building work unless you plan to stay for a while because the house price won't increase enough to get your money back.

They might need to go back to doing location x 3.

LadyEloise1 · 10/02/2023 07:33

They speak of "ceiling price for the area" but surely ceiling prices are made to be broken all the time.

Exactly.

By the time they were finished the work, if I remember correctly, the house was now valued at 30k more than the original value and the spend, so they had not even reached the ceiling price for the area. If they had taken the plunge they would have had the additional bathroom and bedroom they wanted, lived comfortably in their house in the area they wanted for as long as it suited them.

Antaboo · 10/02/2023 09:48

I agree. The programme is constrained by it's own fiscal rules that seem to forbid spending of money like a home is purely a financial investment for the purpose of making a profit.

In real life it's common to spend more to create the needed environment; also knowing that in a few years the cost is overtaken by inflation, and you have a more saleable property.

It's nonsense that Phil had upto £175k to spend while Kirsty spent about £35k for the same family - ooh I get so angry with this programme!

RandomMess · 10/02/2023 10:54

I guess on this programme people are cautious about investing in a house that they may sell in the near future.

We spent a lot on a "forever house" then ended up unexpectedly relocating hundreds of miles away only a few years later. I guess the next owners benefited from our refurb!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2023 11:05

I don't get the ceiling price

If need extra room then you build an extension if you can afford it

Doesn't matter if you spend £50k but house is worth an extra £25

As by the time you sell /move it could be 5/10/15/20yrs

A community is a good thing

Mum hurt her ankle and appreciated help getting kids to school

Im the same. Havnt done school run now for almost 4w due to leg in plaster and total non weight bearing

I'm not allowed to bear weight carefully with support but can't walk far or easily

Without the lovely school mums who live near us I would be screwed getting mini blondes 5 to school

I think that's what I have never got about the programme. To me if you are wondering whether to love or list you decide on one or the other as in list or extend. You don't extend and then make the decision to stay or list. If you decide to extend the property rather than sell it doesn't matter what you spend because you are not planning to sell anytime soon but to renovate the property to suit your needs. The way LIOLI works is that no one wants to spend much on improving the property because they may decide to sell it straight after doing the work so don't want to eat in to their profit.

lieselotte · 10/02/2023 11:46

Yes we were having this discussion as well - you can't spend what you really need to, because you might want to move, whereas if you were going to be there at least five to ten years, it would be worth the investment. I guess the premise of the programme falls down a bit, but it's interesting viewing and I find it less annoying than LLL where people turn down perfectly nice houses because they don't like the wallpaper.

Antaboo · 10/02/2023 12:04

I suppose I should just learn to enjoy it!

I don't know much about making TV programmes but feel that LIOLI has it's own "angle" and they're sticking to it, even though sometimes (everytime in this series) they really have been squeezing a balloon into a box as their participants haven't been well suited to the format so far..

They speak of "ceiling price for the area" but surely ceiling prices are made to be broken all the time.

Our road doesn't have a very high ceiling price but a house sold a year or so ago for £140,000 over it! It was fully refurbished so in immaculate move in condition.
The work we plan to do on our house will put it on par with the price the other house sold for, but we are not planning on moving for a long time (unless we win big on the lotto or premium bonds), and it will make our lives, and that of our disabled dds, much easier. We believe this work will also make it easier to sell when that time comes.
I think the problem with LIOLI is the programme makers have already invested in those families so need to out something out, and realistically it is reflecting the way builds are going for people. The prices are so high that works are either scaled down or on hold.
That said, I still don't understand why the last two families haven't at least put in another loo.

jay55 · 14/02/2023 19:49

Agree the format doesn't work in the current climate. Both lack of housing stock and cost of extending.

Can't believe that coupled downsized their bed, I really hope that was just staging for tv.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/02/2023 21:02

Hmmmm said it before. Hate a recap

Meredusoleil · 15/02/2023 21:04

I vaguely remembered today's house from before and I definitely remember the 2 guys who will be in next week's revisit. I think their house was next to a church/graveyard?

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/02/2023 22:28

Yes R.E.M. the house and making a room out of the garage

OP posts:
Romeiswheretheheartis · 15/02/2023 22:51

I thought the house today turned out lovely - it was a proper renovation. Although they never addressed whether she was still missing having neighbours, 4 years on!

jay55 · 16/02/2023 00:47

Was a great transformation. And lovely couple.
Made me sad for the impossible situations so far this series.

kindlyensure · 16/02/2023 09:31

Yes I agree ^^.

It was a kind of pre-apocalyptic nostalgia fest - pre-pandemic, pre-cost of living crisis, pre-Brexit withdrawal, etc etc etc where life seemed full of possibilities (and Meghan Markle lookey-likies were riding the wave of her popularity) and people could afford to properly consider whether to LIOLI.

LadyEloise1 · 16/02/2023 16:45

Fabulous views from that house near Larne.
I thought the second house was far nicer than the the third one they raved about.
They certainly did a lovely job on the house. The rendering was great.

I hope the woman made friends in the intervening years. She seemed nice.

martinisforeveryone · 22/02/2023 20:58

Did anyone watch this tonight? I only switched on for the reveal and the update.

At the risk of sounding bitchy, I wouldn't have known they'd done anything to update the place, although to be fair, it's obviously a work in progress. Not my cup of tea at all.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2023 20:59

I usually watch thur

I R.E.M. the 2 blokes and the cemetery

The Spanish properties are often much darker than their one was with dark wood, so yes I can imagine the things they have changed tbh!

Turmerictolly · 22/02/2023 21:02

I remember these guys - really quirky house. Don't blame them for cashing in and buying in Spain but I wasn't too keen on the location or house they bought but it obviously works for them. Think they also had another property in Scotland? Wonder how they'll manage the stairs in the Benidorm house as they get older.

So did they use the £600k from the sale of their graveyard house to buy 2 properties? One ins Benidorm and another (smaller) one in Scotland? I didn't hear that bit from them tonight!
