thought a new thread would be apt - it is, after all a two parter...

are you ready? I don't think I am. I think I might cry - especially after the scene with wilf in the cafe and the added poignancy (sp?) of to be or not to be on boxing day.

do we have theories? or are we just content that the world is populated by John Simm giggling look a likes (especially as we are all, obviously, at least 1/2 timelord and therefore unchanged.)

countdoooooooown!

I think the new Dr does appeal to different peoplewith the emotional stuff tbh

I loathed Dr Who apart from the TB years, couldn't stick it-parents still do, really anti it in fact (pretty much all I was allowed towatch as a child was kids TV, Corrie and a programme called Angels- not sure why).

I really love Dr Who now.

Dh adored both- he's easily pleased

I imagine it'd be hard to consistently appeal to the die-hards and make it worth doing financially for the BBC tbh.

I just hope he doesn't take the eccentricity too far.

There's a scene in 'The Time Warrior' where the Doctor is explaining to Sarah-Jane about the Time Lords ('a kind of galactic ticket-inspector')
She doesn't believe him at first,('I could murder a cup of tea') then realises 'You're serious aren't you'

'About what I do, yes,' says the Doctor, 'Not necessarily about the way I do it'

That's the way the Doctor should be - with all the jokiness and manic behaviour, there has to be an underlying seriousness or it doesn't work.

I'm with Peachy's DH I have to say. My first memories (sadly!) are of watching Jon Pertwee as the Doctor, and given that I wasn't born until '71, that's pretty scary. I adored Tom Baker and liked the following incarnations. I was a huge Who fan as a child

BUT, I enjoyed the film (tacky, yes, but so what?) and I love NuWho. I don't want a rehash of the 60s/70s/80s, I want something modern that holds my interest. I've got used to watching programmes where the relationships and feelings of the characters are as much a part of the plot as the story (although prefer UST to the Ten/Rose thing, that got too close for comfort!)

Eleven's going to be a change of pace from Ten and that's a good thing, keeps things interesting...

Last night I was thinking about Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant and I remembered that they shared a scene in the film Jude, which also starred Kate Winslet. Anyway, I found the scene in question on youtube if anyone is interested!

We've just watched the new trailer and my son's (8 yo) verdict is that the new Doctor is "more risk taking but not as smart". We'll see. I'm looking forward to it, but was very sad to see DT go.

What happened to the Master at the end? Did he get sucked away? I missed that bit. And who gave the Doctor the pound coin he used to buy the ticket?

edam · 02/01/2010 15:23

Donna's Dad. Nod to the actor who should have played him, who died very suddenly before filming. Hence Bernard Cribbins being brought in as Grandad.

Northernlebkuchen · 02/01/2010 15:56

Well I thought it was mostly incomprehensible nonsense tbh. I was positively relieved when DT stopped whining and regenerated. My kids didn't cry either - even dd2 who cries at EVERYTHING (she's her mother's daughter) Bernard Cribbins was hugely annoying and John Simm not nearly as much fun as the first time. Quite liked Timothy Dalton - but what was he for...? I thought this was much the weakest ending of all the modern era and I think it's because the Doctor didn't have a defined companion to bounce off. 'Wilf' just didn't cut it for me.

UnquietDad · 02/01/2010 16:15

Mickey's had both Rose and Martha

edam · 02/01/2010 18:08

UQD, I was wondering when you were going to turn up! And then you go for the bloke 'oo-er Missus' instead of giving me your usual expert analysis.

JJ · 02/01/2010 18:51

Thanks edam! I didn't know about Donna's dad.

Ripeberry · 02/01/2010 20:50

What happened to the Master? Do you think he will come back and go for that jaunt with the 11th Doctor?

Kaloki · 02/01/2010 20:59

I hope the Master doesn't come back, I just found him annoying TBH.

True, Delgado was the one and only.

edam · 02/01/2010 23:51

I used to work with someone called Delgado, I was so disappointed when it turned out she was no relation. Lovely woman, but you know, it would have been nice...

serenity · 03/01/2010 11:21

I'm too young for Roger Delgado really, Anthony Ainley was my first TV crush...

RustyBear · 03/01/2010 12:47

Actually his full name was Roger Caesar Marius Bernard de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto, which is magnificently Spanish, but he was actually born in Whitechapel, which he claimed made him a Cockney.

I agree that he was the quintessential Master, though I would have liked to see Derek Jacobi do a bit more of the evil before he regenerated...

MattSmithIsNotMyLoveSlave · 03/01/2010 12:49

Is RTD the only person ever to have watched Return of the King and thought "You know what's wrong with this? Not enough endings..."

DS, who I strongly suspect is RTD's target audience (at least on an emotional level), loved it, though.

Roger Delgado is the better Master but John Simm is welcome to take over my world any time so I have no complaints.

UnquietDad · 03/01/2010 13:22

If the Master ever comes back it is time for an evil female incarnation. In a leather catsuit.

MattSmithIsNotMyLoveSlave · 03/01/2010 13:25

They aren't going to cast Sarah Harding, UQD, no matter how hard you wish...

UnquietDad · 03/01/2010 13:29

Look, I didn't say it!!

MummyDoIt · 03/01/2010 16:41

Just watched the trailer for the new series. He has a gun! He shoots!!! What's all that about?!

RustyBear · 03/01/2010 16:45

Well, if they'd put some of the scenes from Friday in the trailers, you'd have seen Ten with a gun - but he didn't use it on a person, did he?

UnquietDad · 03/01/2010 17:55

He chins a bloke too!

There is still snoggage, though, I see.
