Hello again!!

OP posts:
Salleroo · 09/12/2008 13:23

That was Lisa who keeps pawing Brendan, not Rachel.

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 09/12/2008 14:35

oh god yes about her mum!

basementbear · 09/12/2008 14:50

LOL @ Salleroo, DH and I loved Rachel's parents - thought step-dad was Peter Stringfellow at first! And why doesn't she talk like her geezer bruvs??

Am I the only one who thought Barry Manilow was miming? He sounded great but his lips were hardly moving and the microphone was miles away from his face. Definitely a case of too much surgery.

Shame Austin has gone, not sure who I want to win now cos I don't really like any of them. I warmed to Tom though after he stood up for Lisa and Christine, saying they were the only ones with proper jobs and must be hard fitting in the training.

cyLENTeeNIGHT · 09/12/2008 15:41

missed most of sat show due to DS' bed time, as usual, but have watched some o the routines i missed on iplayer (didn't bother with tom and camilla's foxtrot, yawn).

rachel and vincent were definitely the most consistent on the night, perhaps helped by having the best music - love that eurythmics song.

am glad austin has gone, i had cooled towards him over the series. probably something to do with erin who i agree was just painfully desperate, especially in the dance off. i cackled most uncharitably when they were voted off - her face was priceless

the pro tango was just wonderful and LOVED LOVED LOVED brian and kristina doing the hustle - i was in cheeseball heaven

pinkteddy · 09/12/2008 20:02

Agree with Salleroo and idling, think the judges engineered Saturday so that girls will be in the final. And yet they were all on ITT last night saying how shocked they were that Austin was in the dance off!

I'm beginning to wonder about Tom being in the final as I think if he is in the dance off on Saturday, he is out. The only way for him to be in the final is to be the only one voted through. Judges really do have more than 50% of the vote at this stage as those with lower votes just can't avoid the dance off the sums don't add up. And they get another vote in the dance off - boo! If it was purely 50/50 and the lowest scored went out Lisa would have gone out weeks ago and Austin would still be in.

TeenyTinyTorya · 09/12/2008 20:42

Salleroo! Vernon Kaye isn't a muppet, he's hot!

Saker · 09/12/2008 22:40

Tom would need to be top of the leaderboard to be certain of getting through. Even if he gets the most votes, he could be beaten by one of the girls if he is in 2nd or 3rd place on the scores. However if he does get through then he will almost certainly win as the person with the most public support will win the final and that is likely to be him.

CrushaGrape · 09/12/2008 23:23

I've seen this theory before, that the judges are trying to engineer an all girl final. I've also seen people say that they are trying to engineer it to be one girl one boy. I can't understand why people might think the judges would wish to see that happen; what on earth could their motivation be to do that?

I love the idea that the judges are conspiring to get Lisa and Rachel in the final. The head judge giving Austen a 10 for his salsa, and giving Tom a score of 39 for his foxtrot might not have been the best way to go about it...

And by the way, the judges really don't have more than 50% of the vote at this stage; if the points are tied after the judges and viewer vote are put together, the contestant with the viewer support goes through.

idlingabout · 10/12/2008 09:10

Crusha - my point was that they didn't want an all male final and the way to engineer that was to place Austin bottom with the judges thereby meaning that the only way he could have avoided the dance off was by getting most public votes. The story is that Tom gets the most votes so there was no way Austin would have avoided dance off. They definitely underscored his American Smooth and so he ended up doing Salsa in dance off which was never going to beat Lisa's waltz; but his American Smooth should have.
Lisa will be in dance-off again on Saturday - probably against Rachel so Tom gets to final. Hope they save Rachel but with Tom getting all the votes he will still win final even if judges place him second.
The BBC is looking after its own...

MrsTweedy · 10/12/2008 09:31

Pffff have now rather lost interest in SCD (and I'm a huge fan of the show) as I can't summon up any real interest in the dancers left, celebrity or professional. I'm only still watching to see Brian & Kristina on Sundays.

They all seem (to quote CRH) dull, dull, dull as people.

MrsTweedy · 10/12/2008 09:32

Sorry, to paraphrase CRH as he in no way implied that they were dull people.

ranting · 10/12/2008 09:37

Oh Behave. Austin was clearly the worst dancer on Saturday and it was only right that he went (and I say this as a rugby fan who remembers when Austin was a utility back and he wasn't referred to as the Leicester Lip for nothing).

Personally I can't decide who I want to win, quite warmed to all of them even lip trembly Lisa, although I do think that Tom is lightest on his feet and Rachel is the only one who's come even close to Alesha's great dance of last year.

themoon66 · 10/12/2008 11:16

Agree that Austin was the worst dancer sadly.

Saker · 10/12/2008 11:17

I agree Ranting. If you start from the premise that it's all a conspiracy there's no point in watching it. The thing that disappoints me more is that by having a two person final, the judges effectively have no vote. They are the ones who know about dancing, it's not a personality competition.

I wonder if the scoring would work better if they didn't just rank it but took the actual score into account, at least in the final.

idlingabout · 10/12/2008 12:02

What I'm worriedabout is that we get a winner who has not produced the most memorable dance of the competition. In my view the two most enthralling performances this year have been Austin's Paso and Rachel's Rumba - nothing else has come close. Agree with Ranting though that there is no-one close to Alesha this year. The warmth of her personality came through in her dancing and she had fun with it too - that's not happening this year.

Saker · 10/12/2008 14:46

Well to avoid that I think the effect of the public vote needs to be diminished rather than that of the judges. If Tom wins it is likely to be through public support unless he really pulls something out of the bag for the semi-final.

It was definitely easier to support Alesha last year, but I also thought Matt was very good. Everyone keeps going on about what a high standard it is this year, but Alesha, Matt and Gethin were all extremely good last year and Colin Jackson and Zoe Ball were also of a very high standard the year Darren Gough won.

Salleroo · 10/12/2008 20:10

Does Lisa remind anyone of Alicia Silverstone and her wonky gob? There's even a bit of the Peter Petrelli gob to boot, my husband just informed me

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 10/12/2008 20:57

she does have a funny mouth but i have to say she looked stunning on ITT last night, first time i have really thought wow about her, despite the fact that she was a model.

squeaver · 10/12/2008 21:22

idling, sorry but all this conspiracy theory stuff is rubbish.

WHY didn't they want an all male final? Why not? It's not like it hasn't happened before.

WHAT on earth do you mean "the BBC is looking after its own"? Who? Lisa and Rachel? What have either of them got to do with the BBC?

And, as crusha says, handing out scores of 39 and 10s is a might odd way to get the boys out - especially when you look at Lisa's low score.

And, ultimately, Austen was the worst dancer on Saturday, especially when you compare their dance-off dances.

squeaver · 10/12/2008 21:23

Anyway, more to the point, how much make-up was Kirstie Allsopp wearing on ITT tonight??

PoinsettiaPussyCat · 10/12/2008 21:52

Aw I heart Kirstie! I thought she looked great, but agree the ITT make-up people can get a bit carried away at times! One night Rachel was on and she looked horrendous after their efforts.

I really enjoy the pro-dancers "Strictly Stories", love seeing all the childhood pics.

As far as the main show is concerned... I don't know who I want to win now! Probably Lisa. She's got more personality than Rachel and not quite so 'desperate' as Tom, although I am liking Tom more (esp since the stand-in he did for Brendan!)

Really looking forward to the Argentine Tango, my favourite dance of them all!

pinkteddy · 10/12/2008 23:42

Crush is that true about if the points are tied, the contestant with the viewer support goes through? The only way Austin could have avoided the dance off then was for him to get the most viewer votes and Lisa to get the least.

Agree with idling about the most entralling performances although I would have to add Tom's foxtrot on Saturday and also Tom's quickstep!

CrushaGrape · 11/12/2008 05:13

Yep pinkteddy, it is the case that the public support carries more weight in the event of a tie. There are a few scenarios in which Austin could have avoided the dance off; one example would be Tom bottom with the voters, then Lisa, then Rachel, then Austin at the top. With judges listed first, and voters second, it would have looked like this:

Rachel 4 + 3 = 7
Tom 3 + 1 = 4
Lisa 2 + 2 = 4
Austin 1 + 4 = 5

Austin could also have been safe if the public vote been in the order (top first) of Austin, Lisa, Tom, then Rachel. In this scenario, all contestants would have had 5 points, but Lisa and Austin would have been safe because public support carries more weight.

What I think probably happened at the weekend was this (btw, Lisa's my favourite, but I think realistically she was bottom with the public):

Rachel 4 + 2 = 6
Tom 3 + 3 = 6
Lisa 2 + 1 = 3
Austin 1 + 4 = 5

Oh dear, I seem to know too much about this...

mm22bys · 11/12/2008 09:23

A&E were the weakest couple on Saturday, and based on Saturday's performance, they should have gone.

Tom is a lot less "smug" than he was at the start (all that Tom vs Austen stuff was cringe-worthy). He's calmed down a lot since his wedding.

Rachel is lovely, what's so bad about being "nice"? She dances really well, and there is obviously a lot of chemistry between her and Vincent.

Lisa has improved tremendously, and at the moment I think she is the best dancer.

I don't buy all this "conspiracy" nonsense at all!

squeaver · 11/12/2008 10:40

crush - you need to come round to our house!

Those are exactly the sort of calculations dh spends his time doing!
