Rivals I think for me, nostalgia AND how the other half live!

White Lotus, again, how the other half live!

Detectorists - just perfect in every way and gets better each time you watch it
Kath and Kim - love the ridiculousness of it and couple goals, obviously.
Raised By Wolves (the Caitlin Moran one) - so funny
Battlestar Galactica (the reboot) - I'm a sucker for a good sci-fi
Deutschland 83 etc - love the historical aspect and it's a good story
This Life - takes me back to my youth

Raised By Wolves didn't get much love, as I recall (perhaps affected by views on Caitlin Moran), but I liked it. Deutschland 83 was brilliant.

Yes, you can't get RbW anywhere either! We are also rewatching Flight of the Conchords (picked up the box set in Oxfam) and I love that.

moto748e · 20/09/2026 01:05

Flight of the Conchords, along with The Detectionists, is another one of those shows that everyone says is great (and I'm sure they're right), but somehow, I never got round to seeing. Love this thread, though, and pleased to see so many of my faves included. I only listed one upthread , but to add a couple more at random, I'd like to give some love to Northern Exposure, and NYPD Blue, which really began the transition from cop show into serious drama, then coming into fruition with the superb Homicide, Life On The Street

Dexter, the original series, I actually couldn't get into the reboot, though I might give it another go. I just enjoyed it so much, can't put my finger on why though.
I enjoyed The In-between, but there was only one season. I like things about psychic powers and the paranormal.
The original BBC version of pride and prejudice with Colin firth as Mr Darcy is absolute comfort for me, my go to if I want a cosy night in or I'm feeling a bit down, it's perfect.
Bones was good fun, a bit samey after a while.
Fresh prince of Bel air, the original, assuming they remade it at some point. Was bloody brilliant.

I'm going to be pedantic and pick you up on your description of the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice as being "the original" one.

The BBC has adapted P&P many times over the years; that version was a very popular one but far from the first.

It's grown on me since but I wasn't particularly keen on it when it first came out because I didn't like the casting of a couple of the characters.

I think P&P is probably like Dr Who - the version that you first see when you're growing up is the real one to you.

My first P&P was the one that came before the Colin Firth version. The 1980 adaptation had a better writer (Fay Weldon rather than Andrew Davies). I preferred Elizabeth Garvie as Lizzie to the way Jennifer Ehle played her and Priscilla Morgan was a much less annoying Mrs Bennet than Alison Steadman who was so shrieky and OTT.

Lots of great series here. Here's one I love that hasn't been mentioned I think:

Spaced

With Simon Pegg, Jessica Stevenson, and Mark Heap being brilliant playing the tortured artist / downstairs neighbour.

mondaytosunday · 20/09/2026 09:45

Must add The West Wing to my list.

Most recently The Pitt, don’t really watch hospital drama but this is excellent. Also loved The Queens Gambit (about a young female chess prodigy), and Banshee, pretty violent but such a good series.

I loved The Pitt too. I thought the acting was incredible.

Ironically I stumbled across this series yesterday and binged series 1 yesterday and today! Bloody terrifying!

I couldn’t get into series two at all though!!

I got about half way into the second episode and completely lost interest!

Yeah it seemed to lose it's way after the end of thd book. Series 2 & 3 were ok but it went totally ridiculous after that. However I stuck with it because I'd been so invested in it I wanted to see his it ended.

Shtisel.

It's fascinating and it's in Hebrew and Yiddish, so you have to watch it without being distracted by a phone or book, so that you can read the subtitles.

The acting is superb.

Loved it so much! I went to see Michael Aloni (Kive) speak a few years ago in London - the hall was packed with middle-aged women!! Very sexy man!!
Theres supposed to be a prequel with Nachum as a young man but no sign yet..

I did not know that, thanks! I shall try to find that version, it's definitely something I'd like to watch.
I loath the Kiera knightly film version, not because of Kiera, because of the staging, the farm animals everywhere!

Littledidsheknow · 20/09/2026 18:31

I forgot to mention “Tehran” in my earlier post.
It’s about a female Israeli Mossad agent in Iran. It’s absolutely gripping, with relentless action.

And it doesn’t portray Israel as good and Iran as bad!

Roundaboot · 20/09/2026 18:34

There was a thread about Matthew Rhys earlier in the week which made me think about how amazing The Americans was. Excellent characters, really good actors and the storylines were always really gripping. Also I think it had one of the most satisfying final episodes of any series I've ever watched. Totally nailed it. I was watching like this 😮 right up to the last minute

Yes to northern exposure , loved that series in the 90s ?? And watched it again

Also queer as folk though feel was of it's time
Tehran , brilliant series
Mad men - might have to watch that again.
Raised by wolves - wished they had done another series
The Americans was really good and think each series got better , have only just watched it so will have to wait a few years before going again
The Pitt - brilliant concept and well acted
Deadwood , Ian Mcshane was perfect in that role

HRTQueen · 24/09/2026 21:09

The Wire such depth to so many characters it’s brilliant

Happy Valley
The Soprano’s
Prime Suspect
The Bridge (original)
The Killing (original)

Purplebunnie · 25/09/2026 19:34

@cariadlet This is the version of Pride and Prejudice I prefer. Not a fan of the film with Kiera Knightly, I felt it the costumes brownish dress Kiera Knightly was wearing very dowdy

Edited because I can't spell brownish

MrsToddsShortcut · 25/09/2026 19:57

Inside No 9
The League of Gentlemen
The X Files

But my absolute favourite, which not that many people seemed to watch - The Americans. It was just utterly brilliant in every respect. Had a fantastic cast in Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell & Noah Emmerich and did a fantastically even handed portrayal of Cold War era spying from
the perspective of the FBI and the KGB. Both sides were portrayed as absolutely human. It was just a stunning drama which remained consistently excellent across six series, and had the most quietly devastating ending.

And for anyone who also watched it - The Garage scene at the end is just a stone cold acting masterclass.
