Help me remember the actor's name

Just to satisfy my itching brain!
Had a dream last night which featured an actor walking across a car park. He seemed familiar and I'm sure he's a real person.
The problem is, I can't think of much detail.
He's the sort of person who'd be in drama things like murder mysteries or maybe period dramas of the 1920s/1930s - he'd be playing a hotel proprietor type character.
I think he's fairly tall. He's an older actor - or at least, was then - he may have died.
White hair, with a bit of a wave, sometimes worn slicked back. A bit 'jowly' but not with a particularly wide face and has a moustache.
It's NOT Richard Griffiths. There's a similarity but the actor I'm thinking of has a narrower face than that and I don't think he has glasses.

Any ideas?

It’s all gone a bit Father Hank Tree. Father Hiroshima Twinkie. Father Stig Bubblecard. Father Johnny Helzapoppin. Father Luke Duke. Father Billy Furley. Father Chewy Louie. Father John Hoop. Father Harry Cakelinem. Father Rabulah Conundrum. Father Pee-wee Stairmaster. Father Tri-Peglips. Father Jemimah Ractoole. Father Jerry Twig. Father Spodo Komodo. Father Canabramalamer. Father Todd Unctious.

I'll give Father Larry Duff a call... he's sure to know.

I think that's who I was thinking of! Well done.

Unfortunately I'm no further forward.
As far as I know, this is a real person. Not a concierge (I don't have enough money to stay in hotels like that) and not someone's grandfather.

Because of all the googling I've done, my search history is, as DH puts it, "full of old men".
I have a mental picture of the person, and it seems, I'm just not able to express clearly enough quite how they look. I tried to make a photofit type image but it was horrific, so I abandoned that.
I'll take a look at all the more recent suggestions and update.

All I can add is that it is possible I'm thinking of the character an actor played, rather than the actor looking how I can mentally picture them all the time. However, I'd expect to have seen them, in character, in the searches I've done.

Again, the closest image I have is Richard Griffiths - plump, full head of white hair, quite 'jowly'/double chinned. BUT it isn't him. This person is thinner. They have a longer face than him. They don't have a beard.
Whatever it was they were in, it was filmed in colour. I'm sure it was later than the 70s and 80s. I think the person themselves may be in that age range now, but if I'm visualising them 'in character' then there's a bit of wiggle room.

What sort of character? Modern? Dr. Who/Sci-Fi? Henry VIII-type? What is he wearing in your thoughts?

Edited

A bit posh, a bit old-fashioned but in something relatively contemporary. In the image I have, I'm not sure what role or character (or real-life) situation he was in. Possibly Aa hotel proprietor, in a gentle crime thriller, or kindly/slightly odd uncle in a Michael Palin school drama (or Billy Bunter type thing), or or an ex-headmaster type of role. Possibly an armchair detective type.
In my thoughts he's wearing a cream or white suit. It's not a 50's, 60s, 70s or 80s style.
I can imagine (although not in the picture I have in my mind) he'd play a character wearing tweed, or have a tweedy waistcoat and pocket watch.
I can't remember if he wears glasses/the character wore glasses.

I feel so irritated that I have to keep saying 'no' to all the wonderful suggestions. If I could get a printout from my mind, I would!

Some random people that came to mind:
Moray Watson
Graham Crowden
Dominic Jeffcott - though I can't find a picture of him with a moustache

Thank you for mentioning Moray Watson!
I don't think he fits the bill for OP but he came into my mind and I couldn't think of his name.

2 more - Peter Wight and Patrick Godfrey (I'm just watching an old Midsomer Murders Blush). Peter Wight is a similar vintage to Richard Griffiths, Patrick Godfrey older. Peter Wight is a porter type at a posh boarding school in this.

Oh wow, that's a great shout!

WhyReindeer · 03/09/2026 20:25

Unlikely I'd have thought. He doesn't have a mustache and I'd guess OP would know Tom Baker. He's really well known and she's repeatedly dismissed people as being too famous.

I keep thinking I know who you mean but it's always just Richard Griffiths.

A white/cream suit makes me think of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). Kenneth Cope, maybe? Obviously he was much too young as the white-suited Hopkirk, but he was acting well into his older years, so maybe it's got combined...?

Clive Swift. Prolific actor in 1970s/80s/2000s; possibly best known as Richard Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances.

My best and last guess - possibly before "actually it was my Uncle Tony, the accountant".
