Bethany was convicted of murdering her mother but claims she is innocent.

She is estranged from her father Leonard (Sam Hazeldine – The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power, Slow Horses), who is the charismatic leader of an influential religious movement.

Bethany tells Gabs that she has psychic powers and can predict the future - but what will it take for Gabs to believe her?

And if Bethany didn’t kill her mother, then who did?

The cast also includes Stephen Campbell Moore (The History Boys, Masters of the Air), Lisa Palfrey (Sex Education, Cobra), Siena Kelly (Black Mirror, Domino Day), Naby Dakhli (House of David, Messiah), Richard Elis (The Pact, Creisis), Dean Rehman (The Kite Runner, Until I Kill You), Robert Rhodes (28 Years Later, House of the Dragon) and Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey, Stella).

It’s slow, but I do want to know how it all pans out.
I think Ruth is a good actress as is India Amarteifio as Bethany.
Iwan Rheon is great as the journalist.
I think in some shots of Jack Farthing (Frasier Melville) I get a Hugh Grant vibe from him.

I agree it is a bit slow but I'm invested enough to see it through and I think some of the 'clunkiness' is the script not the acting.

I don’t reliese Ruth was real life in a wheelchair

You didn’t know her from Years and Years, or Doctor Who?

She was brilliant in the former role. (Very much worth watching.) Didn’t have anything stretching to do in the latter.

I watched all of The Rapture in one sitting. So now I’m having to keep quiet. 😅

I am enjoying it so far. I am quite happy with the standard of acting by the main characters.

I am puzzled by one thing though - as Bethany is 17, wouldn’t she be in a secure unit for under 18 year olds? Sonic looks older than 18 to me?

Just finished episode 4. This programme is OK, but not something I would bother carrying on watching if it was say, 10 episodes long. As it's only 5, I'll stick with it.

I know I touched on this earlier, but I'm baffled as to why so much background/scenery is orange and yellowy, and sandy coloured. Like all around them/much of the scenery ... I know they're trying to create an illusion of 'heatwave' and everyone being hot, but it looks a bit daft. Half the trees have orange leaves, and that wouldn't happen in a summer heatwave. Some trees shed their leaves to preserve the tree when there's a long dry spell, but they don't go orange/brown on the tree, and stay there for a while, they just drop off. They don't do the going brown/orange/yellow thing til about late October/early November.

They're overdoing the 'everything is so dry and hot and orange' thing, and it looks daft IMO. It's the UK they're in, not Arizona!

Also, (as I said earlier,) I can't help but laugh at how Bethany is surrounding every drawing she does with pubic hair! 😆

As I said, it's OK this show, but not brilliant IMO. I feel like it should have been better than it is. The one main thing that lets it down is the hugely unlikeable main character - Bethany.

Why do you feel let down if an actor portrays a character so well that you experience strong negative emotions towards that character, @LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway?

Isn’t that part of the logic of this story?

I have now watched all 5 episodes and feel it improved as the series went.
Think someone earlier said tv was nothing like the novel.
Good cast but too much ' story padding' for me.

Haven’t read the whole thread, I’m watching it as it was I believe filmed near Swansea so I’m on the lookout for places I recognise!

I hadn’t read the book so wasn’t watching & making comparisons. I binge watched in 2 goes & enjoyed it mostly, although the ending could have been better. I wasn’t sure if Ruth was a strong enough lead.

Because it was filmed in late autumn and according to a couple of the actors it was decidedly chilly. The make up people used fake sweat and other techniques for effect. But I agree, it was somewhat detracting. I immediately saw from the get go that it was autumn. Not just the colour of the trees but the position of the sun and the general "feel" of it. The air looks different in autumn. I think that given the almost apocalyptic heatwave was integral to the plot, they made a mistake filming when it so obviously wasn't even remotely summer or hot!

Not sure about it tbh. But dh & dcs away this weekend, so will probably binge this & Granite Harbour as not often I get the tv to myself!

And the characters are wearing full length jeans and full sleeves which no one would do in 40 degree heat. Not a single wiped brow either. It’s poor directing.

I just can't be arsed with it. So much padding, the whole thing could have been done in 3 episodes.
