New 5 part drama starting sun 26 July and continuing Monday and week after

Ruth Madeley and India Amarteifio star in The Rapture which is adapted from Liz Jensen’s bestselling novel and made by Mammoth Screen, part of ITV Studios.

Based on Liz Jensen’s bestselling 2009 novel of the same name, The Rapture is described by the BBC as ‘a high-stakes thriller which crackles with danger’. Despite being penned almost two decades ago, fittingly for our summer so far, The Rapture unfolds during a heatwave of apocalyptic proportions, which matches freak weather patterns unfurling across the globe.

Adapted from Liz Jensen’s bestselling novel, The Rapture is a high-stakes thriller which crackles with danger. Set in a heatwave, with protestors on the streets, forensic psychologist Gabs Fox (Madeley) starts a new job at a high-security psychiatric hospital where she meets 17-year-old Bethany Krall (India Amarteifio – Queen Charlotte, The Midwich Cuckoos

Bethany was convicted of murdering her mother but claims she is innocent.

She is estranged from her father Leonard (Sam Hazeldine – The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power, Slow Horses), who is the charismatic leader of an influential religious movement.

Bethany tells Gabs that she has psychic powers and can predict the future - but what will it take for Gabs to believe her?

And if Bethany didn’t kill her mother, then who did?

The cast also includes Stephen Campbell Moore (The History Boys, Masters of the Air), Lisa Palfrey (Sex Education, Cobra), Siena Kelly (Black Mirror, Domino Day), Naby Dakhli (House of David, Messiah), Richard Elis (The Pact, Creisis), Dean Rehman (The Kite Runner, Until I Kill You), Robert Rhodes (28 Years Later, House of the Dragon) and Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey, Stella).

I am finding Bethany very annoying , I guess we are meant to , but she is so hard to like. She definitely hasn’t done this though ( is my thought process , not a spoiler at all ) She must have been framed , but not sure how that happened.

I was going to say this. I have watched episode 2 now too, and I am finding Bethany more annoying and unlikeable as it all progresses... I also HATE how she calls Dr Fox 'Wheels...' (Because she is in a wheelchair.) I know it's only a TV show/story, but it's so jarring and irritating. Also, why do the drawings she does look like they've got pubic hair around them?! 😬

placemats · 27/07/2026 18:59

It's a no spoilers thread. Can we keep it like that? @LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway

Thanks.

Fair enough. And I know this is a TV Pace/no spoilers thread. I only said I had seen episode 2 now. I didn't reveal any spoilers. That's why I am puzzled at the 'it's a no spoilers thread, please keep it like that...' Unless she was saying it to remind me before I said anything/gave anything away.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/07/2026 21:09

all 3 on at 9. So gonna watch this and then watch crows and dark as can ff the ads

Im enjoying this despite the fact its set in a fucking heatwave

dapsnotplimsolls · 27/07/2026 21:58

Why did her husband say 'tell Gabs I love her'? Who was he saying it to?

Bunionbabe · 27/07/2026 23:01

I think there is more to know about the crash. Was there someone else in the car or perhaps he was talking to the emergency services people? Surely Gabs has breached all confidentiality rules and would be sanctioned/sacked. Of course she was going to find Daisy. All predictable so far.

Thoughts on first episode? I think the script is quite poor and I don’t really rate Ruth Madeley as an actress.

I think she's a great actress actually!

At least she is in the ones I've seen her in

I thought Don't Take my Baby was absolutely brilliant. And When Barbara Met Allen was really good as well

A bit unnerving but very promising….

Yes very unnerving!

I assume Bethany only sees a fragment of the future or something like that, must be a reason she doesn’t know exactly what happened here.
Why doesn’t Gabs have any other patients ? Do they only have one to work with , is that the normal procedure in a secure unit like this ?

I think she has other patients yes

We saw a couple of scenes with her with other patients.

But the story is about Bethany so that's what it's snowing

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/07/2026 00:02

I need recaps

thanks for warning @the80sweregreat. I had forgotten it till the end

I will keep watching as I love a tv thriller like this, but Ruth Madeley is woefully miscast. She is not believable as a forensic psychologist. She can’t act either. Ruins it quite a bit.

Poor casting, I couldn’t invest in any of the characters as they weren’t believable. Watched to the end but mentally I switched off.

MayIDestroyYou · 28/07/2026 08:28

To my mind the casting is the very best thing about it!

But even in just Ep 1 there are too many people with too little to do.

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2026 09:02

I like the journalist.

NeedWineNow · 28/07/2026 09:19

Me and DH have watched the first two and decided to ditch it. It's all too formulaic; severely damaged teen, cult, doctor who goes completely off her remit (looking at you Silent Witness) and drunk journalist who may or may not have leaked the story. Also they were supposed to be in the middle of extreme heat and the journalist was sitting there in t-shirt and shirt. No-one looked as though they were particularly hot!

DH summed it up when he described it as being like a Channel 5 offering, half expecting Jill Halfpenny to turn up in some capacity, and getting to the end thinking 'that's 6 hours I won't get back'.

dapsnotplimsolls · 27/07/2026 21:58

Why did her husband say 'tell Gabs I love her'? Who was he saying it to?

I noticed that. I presume it meant that he wasn’t aware of where he was or who he was with, or something like that.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 28/07/2026 13:55

I like the way every scene has a sepia filter over it, (and there's as many things as possible that are brown, beige, orangey, fawn, yellow-ish etc,) to give the impression that it's hot. 😆 (And they've sprayed them all with a fine mist to make them look sweaty and hot!)

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2026 14:05

I don’t mind it tbh. Not read the book , but it seems ok and the journalist and the main character are good.
It’s fairly easy to follow as well. The houses are lovely and it’s clearly not that hot ( unlike the past few months here which have been unbearable)
