How about you go first with your thoughts, seeing as you started a thread?

ilovebrie8 · 21/05/2026 10:20

I was asking if anyone watched it? I've recorded it but not watched it as yet.

That is a bit of a snippy comment....no need!

This is a discussion forum in case you weren't aware.

It’s a bit rich saying it is a discussion forum when you are not adding to the discussion.

I haven't watched it, but the Maddie McCann case is more or less solved, the only question remaining is where her body is.

The German police have an avalanche of circumstantial evidence against a known offender which is highly compelling.

1reason · 21/05/2026 10:45

I watched it last night! Well, about 1 hour.
I did not enjoy it and felt very uncomfortable so stopped watching.
19 years on, I believe this was the first ever docu-drama.
The McCanns issued a statement yesterday criticising it and noting they had not consented to it.

ilovebrie8 · 21/05/2026 10:54

I saw the actress who played KM being interviewed on Good Morning Britain 2 days ago.

I’ll probably give it a watch. It’s such a sad and unavoidable situation, but hopefully if nothing else it’s highlighted not to leave children alone anywhere ever.

Watching this now-you can feel the pain

I remember back in the late 80's/early 90's wed gone away to the seaside (as we did every year) staying in a b&b

We would have all been under 11 years old (definitely still at primary school)

My parents and 3 siblings where in one room and I was in another,2 rooms down

What we didnt know, was they'd put us to bed and 'go downstairs for a drink'

What they meant was 'we'll fuck off to the pub,2/3 miles away,no mobile phones/way to contact us and come back pissed as farts'

This worked out fine for the 7 days a year that we where there, for years until they came back as normal one night and my father headed off to the loo at the end of the hallway and my mother walked into their room

To find a 'blonde woman in their bed, smoking a fag and staring at my brothers' (no idea why my mother was so bothered about her hair colour)

She told her to get out and this woman did-she left with no fuss (thankfully)

Seems she'd wandered in through the open front door and tried every room door until she found an unlocked one and got into the bed

They went to bed themselves and it was told as a funny story the next morning-us kids had no idea they'd been leaving us (we thought they where downstairs) and they did it again that night (and the next, until we went home)

They where more bothered about her smoking or if anything had been stolen than they where about what could have happened to my siblings (I was in another room and my door was locked)

Years later, this case came out in the news and 3 guesses who was the most judgemental about the McCann parents?

Belladog1 · 21/05/2026 11:41

I will watch the documentary, so thank you for bringing it to my attention as I didn't know it was on.

Like the poster above, I was left alone all the time in the 80s. When we went on holiday abroad my parents would tuck me and my sister in bed in the hotel room, and then go back downstairs for drinks and holiday fun. Times have changed a lot since then.

CurlewKate · 21/05/2026 11:54

No. Because I find this sort of “true crime” stuff voyeristic and playing to the worst in human nature.

BCBird · 21/05/2026 11:57

I think I would feel uncomfortable watching this too.

I agree with this. But it is interesting to note how many out of only a few posters so far also used to be left by their parents on holiday. We never were (to my knowledge) - late forties now.

LlynTegid · 21/05/2026 12:05

I did not watch it.

The distaste I have was the PR operation after the disappearance. Trying to minimise the terrible mistake Mr and Mrs McCann made in leaving their children for a short while.

Tabarnak · 21/05/2026 12:14

I'm not watching it.

The McCanns didn't consent, it's cashing in on a horrible, horrible event, the whys, wherefores etc have all been rehashed. The perpetrator is, as stated by a pp, well known to the German police. Unless anyone can provide the final evidence they need, leave this in peace. It's voyeuristic and sensationalist. What's to be gained? Let's have a thought for the twins.

Of course it was avoidable!
I haven’t watched this nor do I think I would but I said at time if the parents were from a different background they would of been under suspicion of negligence and hung out to dry by media and police plus SS

I don't think times have changed much at all tbh, irresponsible parents are still irresponsible parents.
My late DM talked about the 1st holiday my parents went on after I and my cousin were born in the 50s. The 2 families spent the day together, then 1 couple looked after both toddlers while the other couple went out to eat. Then the couples swapped.
Mum said she had never eaten a meal so fast and my aunt (Dad's sister) said the same. Our families were close, we lived in the same village, I am 6 months older than my cousin and we spent quite a lot of time together but both sets of parents were uneasy leaving their precious child behind, even with trusted relatives.
When MM disappeared, I worked with someone whose garden was over the fence of the local cricket club. As she said she sometimes took her 3 children to the clubhouse but she had never left them alone In the house, even with the door locked, to go for a drink there without them.
As I said it's nothing to do with the times, all to do with responsibility.

Yes, I don't know why some people are so keen to minimise the fact that they were wrong to leave the children or the fact that they lied and changed their stories numerous. It can only be due to the fact they're middle-class doctors with connection, I suppose, because other parents of missing children have been criticised for various things over the years.

I really feel for them and all they've lost, but they're not beyond criticism, or at least they shouldn't be.

ilovebrie8 · 21/05/2026 12:30

@Tabarnak Channel 5 have obviously decided to make it for whatever reason and that's their choice as is if anyone wants to watch it that is their choice too.

That is the way it works here free speech and (relatively) uncensored media.

I was surprised to see it advertised on Channel 5 ...but it was and is such a high profile case and unsolved.

Yes I watched it. Just rehashed most of the stuff we already knew. The Portuguese police seemed pretty much convinced of their guilt

I recently listened to Maddie a podcast with an Australian host I think made in 2019, a very interesting listen . I stand by the fact that they neglected their children , and that is what how the crime happened so they bear responsibility. I don't know what happened and won't point fingers but some shady stuff regarding deleted phone logs was brought up in the podcast. And the tapas bar distance from the apartments was long , you only have to look at kates own book it had a map .

The distaste I have was the PR operation after the disappearance. Trying to minimise the terrible mistake Mr and Mrs McCann made in leaving their children for a short while.

It wasn't a 'mistake', it was a choice and they made it repeatedly, night after night, to leave their children in an apartment with the door unlocked.
