The actress wasn't really a great match. Her accent was too harsh and she didn't come across as refined as Kate Mccann.

I don’t see what the McCanns, or anyone, would have to gain by falsifying the date of the photo.

It's because it's widely accepted as a conspiracy theory that Maddie was already dead by then.
Killed either by overdosing or from a fall from a Couch.
If Maddie had a post mortem, it would be evident.
There's a James English Podcast with Goncarlo Amorol who did a lot of detective work surrounding this case (and wrote a book)

Poonu · 21/05/2026 22:00

Clarence Mitchell. The PR guy for the McCann's is now a reform councillor - as an aside.

Firstly Amaral was a detective in the case. If he ‘did a lot of detective work and drew a conclusion’ why didn’t they put the McCanns on trial? Why simply write a book instead?

Secondly Madeleine was at her kids club the afternoon of the day of her disappearance. The detective work didn’t seem up to much but I assume they were bright enough to check this with the nursery staff. So that theory is instantly debunked.

I would have watched it but didn't even know it was on. Strange that suspect hasn't been charged yet if he's definitely guilty.

FernFaery · 21/05/2026 21:50

Can’t you answer? How does a part time GP use metadata to manipulate photos in 2007, whilst on holiday with restricted access to computers?

I can answer. Gerry had travelled home to England in the intervening 3 weeks and his brother-in-law is a photographer.

I'm not going to go into all the detail because Peter MacLeod has laid it all out very well on his blog much better than I could.

The name of the blog is 'What really happened to Madeleine McCann'. The relevant posts (chapters) are 67 (a very good summary of everything), 12, 14 and 15.

I would link directly if I could but I hope I have provided enough information for the interested reader to find the posts for themselves.

Marcipex · 21/05/2026 22:07

If Madeleine was at the kids club that day, which would be easy to verify, then she was definitely alive until teatime.

So …I’m confused. There’s no point in falsifying the date. It’s not about showing what she was wearing because she went missing in her pyjamas.

Wasn't he already in prison for other crimes?

Yep. She had attended the crèche all week so no issues with ID either - they would’ve known who she was and what she looked like, and been able to confirm if she had attended that afternoon or not. If she hadn’t, well we would all know about that. So she obviously did.

I couldn’t agree more. Nothing like Kate

I haven't watched it, but the Maddie McCann case is more or less solved, the only question remaining is where her body is.

The German police have an avalanche of circumstantial evidence against a known offender which is highly compelling.

give over he is just a patsy, it's solved alright but justice hasn't been served

she wasn't, I am surprised this myth still persists.

Hotandpointy · 21/05/2026 22:33

It’s not just that they left the children every night, according to the McCann’s Maddie was upset the night before saying, “Sean was crying and I couldn’t find you, where were you?” What kind of parent hears that and then leaves their kids again that night?

Not to mention, who spends their time hoovering out the boot of the hire car (that the cadaver dogs picked up a scent in) when their child is missing and goes for cocktails without their remaining two children?

I’m pretty sure that if I left three kids in the house with the door unlocked, went down the road to the pub for half an hour and one was taken, social services would take the other two and prosecute me!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/05/2026 23:01

I find the idea of a part time GP having the tech savvy in 2007 to ‘tamper with the metadata’ on a photo frankly nuts. We didn’t even use terms like ‘metadata’ in 2007, let alone know how to use it in a sophisticated manner. How old are you?

We absolutely were using "metadata" in 2007, and it's not something you "tamper with", more something that proves the original has been altered and reveals it's not what it's being purported to be.

This is far from the only thing the McCanns team misrepresented.

Can’t you answer? How does a part time GP use metadata to manipulate photos in 2007, whilst on holiday with restricted access to computers?

They didn't "use metadata to manipulate it" while they were on holiday. The photo was presented to the media weeks after the holiday finished by the woman they were employing to liaise with the media. Subsequent examination of the metadata of the file released to the media proved it was not what the McCann's PR was claiming.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/05/2026 23:06

The UK Government pressured the Portuguese Government to remove the case from the PJ and hand it to UK Police, ridiculous in the first place since the events took place on Portuguese soil, so the investigation wasn't the Portuguese authorities' remit in any case. If it had been, it's possible the McCanns would have faced trial. We simply do not know.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/05/2026 23:13

Yes they made a very serious mistake in leaving the kids alone, but the apartment was within viewing distance and they went back regularly to check on them.

The McCanns appartment was not visible from the Tapas bar, and several members of the party totally contradicted the McCanns' claims about how frequently the children were being checked upon. They claimed it was every 20 minutes to half an hour, whereas in reality it was more like 90 minutes apart. The member of the party who "checked" the children prior to Kate discovering Maddie missing admitted to police that when he visited the apartment, he didn't even fully enter the room the children were sleeping in, and that all he did was briefly look through the door, which was ajar, and that he couldn't even see Madeleine's bed so he couldn't verify that she was even there at that point.

ilovebrie8 · 21/05/2026 23:19

Correct @XDownwiththissortofthingX The UK govt pressured the Portuguese govt to handover the case to the UK police from the PJ and sent a spokesperson for the McCanns.
This is strange as the incident happened in Portugal and under the Portuguese jurisdiction.
Gordon Brown heavily involved.

Yes
I cannot imagine leaving my kids on holiday to go drinking I find that just bizarre!
my parents never did it and we would never do it either.

LizzieSiddal · 21/05/2026 23:21

I don’t believe any parent should leave their young children unattended, however I also don’t believe that Gerry and Kate had anything to do with Madeline’s disappearance.

Id also add that I had my dds in the 1990s and many of our friends left their young children in hotel rooms and on cruise ships in their cabins!! Baby sitting services would walk around listening out for children and babies crying then would contact the parents (via tannoy usually). At the time I thought this was horrific, mainly due to fire risks but it was accepted practice, especially with middle class parents.

BigAnne · 21/05/2026 23:29

LlynTegid · 21/05/2026 12:05

I did not watch it.

The distaste I have was the PR operation after the disappearance. Trying to minimise the terrible mistake Mr and Mrs McCann made in leaving their children for a short while.

They left their 3 kids, 2 of them babies every night of their holiday. And it wasn't for a short time as several of them were checking on them every 30 minutes, allegedly.

Its still a thing to use a listening service, holiday club etc in hotels.

I will watch the documentary, so thank you for bringing it to my attention as I didn't know it was on.

Like the poster above, I was left alone all the time in the 80s. When we went on holiday abroad my parents would tuck me and my sister in bed in the hotel room, and then go back downstairs for drinks and holiday fun. Times have changed a lot since then.

Our parents didn't leave us - we did things as a family and stayed up later than we would have at home.

I think the McCanns and their friends treated it like sitting in the garden at home when the kids were in bed upstairs.

I agree and she keeps saying "everythink" not "everything" which I'm finding overly annoying.

PinkNailPolish2026 · 21/05/2026 23:49

We watched this tonight. I remember reading a forum called The 3 Arguidos at the time and a lot of what was said tonight was said online then.

Like many others I can’t understand why they left their children alone, it’s not something we would have done. My heart goes out to Madeleine for whatever happened to her, imo the parents should have been prosecuted for neglect but that’s another debate. I still find the whole scenario very odd.
