What TV shows have you been unable to get into even though they are meant to be amazing?

For me it’s The Sopranos, The Bear, and Succession. I also gave up on Severance. Just never went back. I don’t get The Bear at all. I haven’t completely written these off and would go back if someone can strenuously argue for them in a way that persuades me!

Never heard of The Bear

it’s won quite a few awards and I just get nowhere with it !

Can anyone big up Succession or Sopranos to get me watching?

I see we both love The Wire and the West Wing, so I’ll have a go: succession has all the gossipy political smarts of the West Wing and all the propulsive plotting of The Wire. It’s also similarly left-leaning, politically speaking, to both. The writing is excellent and the performances are fabulous. I remember that the first episode is quite challenging (everyone seems absolutely hateful and there’s that bit where Roman wanks on his office window) but if you can bear it, try to watch the first three or four and see how you feel. After a while you stop hating the kids and start feeing achingly sorry for them. It has some AMAZING set piece episodes that really have you on the edge of your seat. Plus Matthew Macfadyean in the performance of his life!

My kids are desperate for me to get into Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul but I absolutely cannot do it, I just don’t care about a single thing that happens. I think it’s a style of humour that just doesn’t work for me.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/05/2026 09:36

@PacificStateyou make it sound better than I remember. I think part of the problem is somebody I find desperately tedious absolutely raved about it. !!

I've thought of an old one: E.R. Two of my housemates at University were obsessed with it. To me it was typical Amercian schmaltz that was so prevalent in the 90s. * *

Twinkletoesandspaghettios · 03/05/2026 09:39

Yellowstone

beth was too hateful

I did an ER rewatch and only got as far as all the main ones leaving. It was nowhere near as good as I remembered

That’s the thing about some of these shows — the pressure from other people almost puts you off. It puts me in a mardy mood, like ‘go on then, fucking impress me’. Which is a hopeless way of approaching anything!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/05/2026 09:46

Yes I definitely had EXPECTATIONS

Stranger things .. tried it twice and made it season three but god it was boring and repetitive. Witless silence (silent witness), Amandaland which was just not funny unlike Motherland. Got bored with the Americans, better call Saul, Yellowstone and so many others.

I was the same. Should’ve loved it as I loved historical stuff and Downton Abbey but similar just didn’t get it.

Tbf Bridgerton isn't particularly historical its more a spicier Mills and Boons

Theresalittlebitofwitchinyou · 03/05/2026 10:07

Peaky Blinders although House of Guinness was amazing!

Yellowstone tried 3 times then gave up, Beth was the only bearable one although I see she has a spin off coming so that might be ok.

Didn’t see the point of Traitors until about 6 weeks ago then began binging it and am about to finish s4 and love it.

The one about the rich American People

The last of us

The Bear

KitsyWitsy · 03/05/2026 11:02

Shows I've given up on:
The Americans
Succession
Dexter
Yellowstone
Peaky Blinders
Stranger Things
Severance
Slow Horses

I know a lot of these are objectively good shows but I just seemed to at some point stop watching. They didn't keep me engaged at all. Yellowstone, I tried several times as I like other shows in that franchise. There's probably loads more I can't remember.

They definitely should have made more Motherland instead. I’d also love a series based around Kevin!

Peaky blinders. Sopranos. Game of thrones. Shitts creek. Santa carlita diet. Ozark. The office uk. And countless others. I struggled with Mad men but after many attempts i am finally getting into it.
I loved breaking bad, and Gotta call Saul, in fact I liked the latter better.

Fleabag
Amandaland

If you could give Fleabag another go, you might end up loving it.
It's the only thing on this thread so far that I'd say that about.

CoastalCalm · 04/05/2026 18:02

Loved the Bear , it was Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders for me - tried to get into them but just silly

IceStationZebra · 04/05/2026 18:05

Sopranos, The West Wing, Bridgerton, the one with Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Smith in a fancy Manor House, and Line of Duty.

It took me a while to get into The Bear but I’m glad I persevered with it as some of the later season episodes are amazing.

Starseeking · 04/05/2026 18:05

Friends
Sex and the City
Game of Thrones
Traitors

I would stick up for Peaky Blinders and Schitts Creek. You need, with both, to get past S1

Absolutely, Schitts Creek I didn’t get at all for the first couple of episodes then it just hit me and I couldn’t get enough of it. Beautifully writing, genius casting and wonderful acting, genuinely one of the best things I’ve ever seen. And to thing I nearly dumped it!!

Breaking Bad though, big nope.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 04/05/2026 18:21

Downton Abbey
Stranger Things
Breaking Bad
Love is Blind

fedupandtired1 · 04/05/2026 18:25

Gilmore girls , tried a few times and failed

Crushed23 · 04/05/2026 18:29

Almost all of them.

I like a handful of shows that I watch on repeat.

I like on average one ‘new’ thing (as in, fully enjoy, would watch again) every 3 years or so. The latest is White Lotus season 2 from a few years ago. Before that, Fleabag.
