Was an avid ER fan 20+ yes ago. See its now on netflux, started rewatching. Its so superior to anything I have watched recently on TV. I had forgotten just how good it was! Anyone else?

Really I think it’s around 2003 now (series 7) and at my DDs school at this time there were several lesbian parents and no one batted an eyelid.

That's quite unusual. In 2003, Section 28 was still in force. I suspect no one talked about the lesbian parents simply because teachers felt bound to say nothing for fear of being seen to break the law - but legally, until November, they would not have been allowed to 'condone' what was defined as 'a pretended family relationship'.

In 2003, same-sex couples had only been legally allowed to adopt jointly for a year, so it is likely at least some of those parents had no legal rights. And lots of people still thought that was perfectly ok. Well into the 90s, most women in lesbian relationships who went to court for custody of their children, lost custody.

It's only in 2008 that same-sex couples could be be considered legal parents to a child conceived during their relationship.

It's all really recent stuff.

@Usernamenotfound1 thank you for the St Elsewhere info, Im going to watch after The Pitt.

Channel 4 is showing it all if you have a vpn :)

Thanks for that. I've idly thought about a VPN, but you've actually given me a reason to look into it.

I never watched this, it was a bit before my time but I know my mammy & my aunties did, like with Hill Street Blues, Dallas etc

I do know what you're talking about though because I LOVE all the old 80's shows & dramas..WTF were they thinking? Did the son even feature much in the show? It's up there with Bobby coming out of the shower

Yes, the son was in the show, but as far as I can remember was probably more just as a peripheral character, there to show his effect on his father and his sister, rather than any real threads about him.

Bobby in the shower! Yes, that was truly bizarre, but it was handled with such self confidence that they sort of got away with it. I loved the days of the improbable flash soapies like Dallas and Dynasty with completely unreal, larger than life characters.

I’m onto s6 now. Suddenly lots of new faces!
Also so many now recognisable guest stars.
Connor from Angel as an artist who swallows paint in the same episode as Martha Plimpton.

Going back to Carol she’s pretty awful to MP’s character - shopping her to the police & separating her from her baby. She had a meanness.
I also remember a case from s1 where she’s mean to a young rape victim, telling her off for ‘lying’ as she was actually raped by 3 men. Poor traumatised girl!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/04/2026 21:56

I’d forgotten Carla died 😢

The little boy who plays Reece is such a good little actor, he’s such a sweet boy.

Doesn’t look like Marks parenting has improved in between kids 🙄

Raahh · 18/04/2026 21:24

I'm on an ER re-watch, and nearly up to the episode where Scott Anspaugh dies. It's still the episode that sticks with me most, and the Green Day song 'Good Riddance' (Time of your Life) was always one of my favourites.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/04/2026 22:03

I’ve gotten to the bit where Rachel comes to live with Elizabeth and Mark, I'm a bit shocked they almost immediately roped her into babysitting her baby sister when she’s only 14 herself!

denisdenisdenis · 18/04/2026 22:23

14 year olds babysitting was much more common in the 90s.

Im trying to look out for things that are cultural changes like that.
There definitely aren’t as many overweight/obese people

The series is more political in the very early seasons.
eg sick ins
talking about low pay
lots about those with no health insurance
etc

I googled and found out that the ‘county hospital’ Crichton did his training at did actually get closed down.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/04/2026 07:56

It’s not the 90s now though, this is early 2000s (season 8) I was doing my nurse training then. I think a 14yo babysitter would have been okay for older kids but I still think a 14yo being left to look after a young baby would have raised eyebrows.

It does highlight how crap the American maternity system is though, all of the mums on the show were back to work within 6 weeks or so.

SarahAndQuack · 19/04/2026 08:34

YY, I think I remember being shocked about Rachel minding the baby at the time! I would have been about 14 and no one I knew was minding a baby!

Definitely notice that people are thinner.

In the very early seasons there's quite a bit about abortion care, isn't there - sadly I don't think that'd be included in the same way now. Weaver has to tick off Del Amico because she can't complete an abortion on a patient who is quite far along, and so on.

Usernamenotfound1 · 19/04/2026 09:59

I also suspect 14 year olds babysitting is more common in the US, where the employment rights are less secure, there’s very little paid mat leave etc.

i can’t remember exactly but wasn’t it some sort of childcare fell though issue? Or wasn’t Elizabeth really unwell so Rachel had offered so she could sleep?

dd was looking into au pair work for a gap year in the US. Was horrified to learn an au pair in the US will often be working 50-60 hour weeks. So that’s an 18 year old with pretty much full time care of multiple children.

again back to shitty employment rights and no such thing as working time directive, so parents are putting in ridiculous hours, so an au pair is too.

and it’s not unusual for it to be a case of “you have to do what we say or we report you to immigration” lose their job, lose their visa and the get them deported.

@Raahh That was such a touching storyline, Jeanie was wonderful with Scott and the bond between them seemed so real on screen. I also liked it as it made Anspaugh see the error of his ways, when he and Kerry had moved to fire Jeanie earlier in the season.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/04/2026 21:46

@Usernamenotfound1 no they told Rachel she has to cover the couple of hours between the childminder going home and them getting home from work. They even went on about how to heat up the bottle of milk.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/04/2026 22:42

I’ve made it to series 9, I’d forgotten how much Luca went downhill in this series.

He’s turned into a womanising sleaze bag 🤢

Poor Romano and his arm 😱

Xmasbaby11 · 23/04/2026 23:15

I’ve just started series 10. Luca definitely went downhill, and there are suddenly a load of medical students and Neela. Quite a different feel to the show. I do love Romano and his rage - which you can well understand in his position!

Raahh · 24/04/2026 09:38

I'm taking a break from ER to watch series 2 of the Pitt.

It is strange to go from baby Carter to burnt out Dr Robby again (we are the same age Grin). Especially when I am in denial as to how long ago the first episodes of ER are anyway...

maysayyea · 24/04/2026 10:40

I wish they had brought Bob back in later series. As a visiting surgeon. Would have been a nice throw back

Raahh · 24/04/2026 11:46

Some character storylines just faded away , with no real ending. They seemed to get a bit of a build up- and then, nothing. Bob was one. Didn't see the point of them mentioning that she used to be a surgeon, if they then didn't do anything with it.

Maggie Doyle was another. All the stuff about the harrassment by Romano- and then she just vanishes.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/04/2026 14:08

Yeah they do that with a few characters although they do sometimes randomly bring them back like Jerry.

They definitely should have got Carol and Doug to Marks funeral. I think the episode he dies goes down as one of the saddest moments of TV ever 😢

Scorchio84 · 24/04/2026 16:42

Ah yeah with the Ukele version of "Somewhere over a rainbow"

She needs to end up at the Pitt!

would love to see that. I know she was only in it for 5 minutes but a really memorable character. Off to look up the actress now…

Scorchio84 · 24/04/2026 18:00

I forgot all about Bob! Nice one, I def need to go back properly

Raahh · 27/04/2026 16:17

I'm on series 6- and had forgotten that Judy Parfitt (Sister Monica Joan, Call the MIdwife) played Elizabeth Corday's mother. She looks so young! And is obviously not dressed as a nun, which makes a difference. Grin

Blimey I knew she looked familiar but hadn’t made the connection and I’m a massive Call the Midwife fan!!!
