https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-15628823/Nadiya-Hussain-attack-BBC-cancelled-difficult-conversations.html

I think this woman needs her to realise her star has fallen like a lot of minor celebs. She has had a good run and everything has did was tired. New cookery blood should be allowed a chance.

I thinks it's undignified to start accusing her erstwhile employers of racism.

Nadiya Hussain launches another blistering attack on the BBC

Nadiya Hussain has launched another blistering attack on the BBC after previously claiming she'd been axed due to racism in the 'broken' TV industry.

I see,,thank you. What's the difference?

The hijab covers the neck completely, and drapes over the shoulders and the chest.
The turban wrap just covers the hair.

This level of kneejerk, reactionary underthinking makes me actually incredulous.

Well aren't you sophisticated.

I think it’s an important observation and is what I meant by she was palatable as a Muslim woman up to a certain extent then she became unpalatable.

I would argue Christmas is more cultural than religious these days though.

But food for Eid is also cultural. I am not trying to catch you out or anything but watching food programmes if you are interested in food programmes can include other cultures and festivals.

She had a good 10 years,I thought some of the recipes were not that good TBH, she lost me when she crumbled Wotsits on macaroni and cheese. I mean, why?
She did better than lots of people on Bake Off or whatever it was.

I had almost forgotten the Wotsit abomination 😂

Reminds me of a woman I saw on TikTok once, who boiled down an entire tube of Pringles to make "soup"

PinkMagpie · 10/03/2026 09:34

There are lots of other Bake Off contestants who create amazing recipes, much better than Nadiya’s. I would love to see them get some of the opportunities she has had

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 10/03/2026 09:35

She’s the only Bake-off winner I’ve heard of, so I don’t think she’s done badly. She’s done better than all the others, from my perspective.

nomas · 10/03/2026 09:35

She has a point when bloody James Martin the bore is on BBC every bloody weekend.

Edited

Yes but in day to day life any woman who is covering her hair even with a turban would be described as being Hijabi. Her clothes would then cover her shoulders and chest.

I think I might write a book of Christian Cooking…..it’ll be pretty much the same as Muslim Cooking but won’t scare the flag shaggers.

Go for it. People always seem put out when things don’t sell. It’s not compulsory to buy any cookbook or watch someone’s show.

She's gone way beyond TGBBO. That's just trying to keep her in her box and proves her point.

I read a quote from her saying she'd compromised on TV by covering only her hair and not (as would've been her preference) also her neck.

I'm incredulous at the level of contradiction involved in citing sexism whilst complaining about not being able to indulge something that is inherently sexist. Correct me if I'm wrong, however isn't the act of covering an adherence to 'modesty and obedience'?

Why wasn't she allowed to cover her neck? I agree re modesty rules but I sounds a bit odd for necks to have to be shown. Would a scarf or roll neck jumper not have been allowed to cover the neck?

Maybe she just preferred the turban & wanted an excuse in case people trolled her for not wearing hijab?

Bruisername · 10/03/2026 09:36

And I imagine food for Muslim festivals varies across the world, just like Christmas food varies - so I can see how you could get a good book out of that because it’s essentially ‘special’ meals

I can’t see how it’s so controversial!!

CautiousLurker2 · 10/03/2026 09:36

likelysuspect · 10/03/2026 09:27

John Torode was completely done over, no scandal there

Gregg Wallace is not a TV chef!!!

Gino - yes.

Who else seeing as the were the 'starters'.

Just what is your problem - and with me in particular? Doesn't matter whether YOU - or even I - think those scandals have legs - they got weeks of news coverage and have pretty much ended these men’s television careers. In turn this has hastened the bursting of cookery show genre bubble. And FYI - I am from a muslim family and rather like Nadiya so not sure what your issue is with my PPs.

If you have an issue with the demise of cookery programmes or these men’s careers, harass the programme makers and the broadcasters, not me.

Iced cronut

What the 'cronut' tells us about why TV cooking shows are dying

The curious case of why the UK has fallen out of love with once-beloved 'chop and chat' food shows.

Nadiya was very sweet and endearing on bake off, which was part of her appeal. People are hacked off with her now because she won’t play the contrite woman anymore. I have no doubt the BBC is institutionally racist and regardless of what happens with her career now it is right that she uses her platform to speak on it. People are acting like because she is a brown woman (and not a white man) she should be grateful she had any success at all, and she should shuffle off happily because gosh she really shouldn’t have had this success anyway. It’s gross.

I am not convinced her name would get her Ramadan book selling.

In the posh hardback cookbook market it's likely her name would put people off. As a non-Muslim, if I am buying a book about a new cuisine/culture I want it written by an expert. My memories of her putting wotsits and baked beans into random recipes means she is an instant no.

Looking on Amazon at the top selling Ramadan book, it's very similar but the writing is better, the chapter structure is better and the recipes are better. Even though I've never heard of the author, it's the one I'm more likely to buy.

Yes fair enough

Interestingly, Ottolenghi who of course I have tons of books from, was sort of trained, he was a trained pastry chef, but nothing else, then opened some delis and went from there

But people would probably put a lot more store in his books and recipes and view him as more authoritative perhaps than Nadiya?

Im sure theres others but he sprung to mind, he does a lot of collaborations with other chefs/cooks/restaurateurs, under the category of what woujld be called ME or Islamic/Jewish cooking Im sure. Not sure why there have been so many posts on this thread incredulous of something called ME or Islamic or Muslim cookery.

The ME share huge amounts of cross over dishes so 'Jewish' dishes are often akin to 'Muslim' dishes and all competing for the title of 'best this or that, or first this or that'

GrooveArmada · 10/03/2026 08:11

I think some of you don't distinguish between reality 'stars' and fully trained, established professionals. You can't compare the two. Reality 'stars' are usually promoted very fast before they're replaced by another 'wonder' coming from the same show 6-12 months later. It's a different life cycle. They are promoted intensely to milk their profits in a short space of time. People get sick of them and they get replaced. Professionals tend to have longer careers because, hold that thought, they appear on TV less or in a different capacity. They actually have their own businesses to run which is what got them in TV in the first place. That was extremely competitive to begin with and they don't exactly have guarantees for life either. Many jumped ship between TV channels, evolved into travel shows, wine tasting, judging shows (Bake Off included...). They're not necessarily having their own cooking shows, they've diversified a lot.

Nadiya had offers from other channels, didn't she? She chose not to accept them. I think that's a bad business move. Her brand needed a refresher which she never got and that's the bottom line, I think. To repeat what I said earlier, this does not diminish the fact what she's saying may well be correct - alongside the above.

You've summed up what I was trying to post.

mjf981 · 10/03/2026 09:37

I think she is quite appealing. But I agree with others - she has had a very good run and people are bored now and have moved on. She has been far more successful than most of the Bake Off winners and should be proud of that.

Ok you love her, I get your point but she was on the BBC and they did tick a box and she didn't mind did she until she wasn't. I don't care if you think Im horrible your opinion means totally nothing to me.
In fact Im laughing at how excited you sound. .

Love her? Excited?
I'm laughing at how hyperbolic you're getting 😁
I just think you're kind of proving her point with your "box ticking" comment.

SadTimesInFife · 10/03/2026 09:38

Delia Smith isn't on TV anymore.
Maybe her show just didn't get the viewing numbers?
10 years is phenomenal. Enough to pay the mortgage off!!

Namingbaba · 10/03/2026 09:38

Seapoint2002 · 10/03/2026 09:28

The BBC will know exactly what her viewing figures are. If they are not high enough you get canned. That's literally it!

I think it's as simple as this. You can argue about why and maybe there is something about her identity that affects her ratings or maybe not.

I enjoyed her on Bake Off and was happy she won as it was a more enjoyable series to see someone develop and gain confidence rather than in some series where there's an obvious winner from the beginning. She's maybe the most successful to come from that show and has done well. Most winners are lucky if they get a cookbook out of it.

From the recipes people have posted they do seem bizarre. She's not a professional chef so it's not fair to compare her to them.

I'm sure given her name recognition she can still gain an audience. YouTube and social media platforms have earned nobodies large sums so I'm sure she could do something with them, given she's starting with a major advantage.

No, the hijab isn't about obedience.

Have you seen Nadiya with her husband? On what planet do you think she is obedient to him?!

Book, not show

Can you at least spell her name correctly, OP? You're just proving her point.

It's in the headline you linked so hardly dificult?
