I think this woman needs her to realise her star has fallen like a lot of minor celebs. She has had a good run and everything has did was tired. New cookery blood should be allowed a chance.

I thinks it's undignified to start accusing her erstwhile employers of racism.

Nadiya Hussain launches another blistering attack on the BBC

Nadiya Hussain has launched another blistering attack on the BBC after previously claiming she'd been axed due to racism in the 'broken' TV industry.

I thinks it's a bit precious to obsess about the spelling or pronunciation of foreign names when Nadia is a perfectly phonetically acceptable way to spell a name. People often misspell Chinese name, Eastern European names etc. with no offence taken.

whatever the precise spelling of Nadia 's name she is still a chef with tired ideas.

Nadiyyah is the more fundamental Arabic name and I wonder if Nadiya uses the current pronunciation as her family deemed it more anglicised? Nadia has both Slavic and Arabic routes.

Getting people’s names right is pretty fundamental to basic respect. I think that’s what you’re missing here, though, isn’t it?

Yes!

mids2019 · 22/03/2026 07:24

I personally think it is easy to mispronounce or mispell foreign names of you are not a speaker of that toungue. There is less ambiguity about a name like Fred than Nadia.

it is a simple mistake not an insult.

I mean Hussein and Hussain are pretty interchangeable due to being derived from the same Arabic word. You would not be overly offended if the wrong vowel was used as you are translating from another language and alaphabet. Obviously for legal reasons correct spelling is important in society at some pointa but offence shouldn't be taken if the wrong from is inadvertently used in casual conversa tion. It shouldn't be interpreted as a slight or ignorance of the writer.

Claire, Clare.
Hailee, Hayleigh, Hailey.
Aidan, Aiden.
Brian, Bryan.
Michael, Mykel, Micheal.
Emily, Emilee, Emilie.

Guilty as charged.

My name is also another that although English, is common to misspellings.
I still misspell other people's names.

With mine, I just correct people and move on.

Same here I have an 'English' name that no one, and I mean no one spells right.

You all know how to spell Nadiya now though, it’s a thread started specifically about her to tell her to ‘stop moaning and get a job.’

You could quite easily get it right, unless it’s done purposely of course. Why might that be? 🤔

Don’t worry, we know. Your clumsy efforts aren’t for nothing.

Butteredtoast55 · 22/03/2026 18:51

Anyway, in terms of Nadiya's cookery show not being recommissioned .....she lost me when she put crisps in the crumb base of a dessert and scrunched up Wotsits in her macaroni cheese.
Nothing to do with her colour, faith or worldview, and everything to do with her recipes being a bit shit.

OhNoThankYou · 21/03/2026 19:53

If you want to make this accusation, I think you should at least spell her name correctly. Nadiya.

The original poster said 'Nadia', and it's literally in the title. What an odd thing to pick me up on...😆

Theunamedcat · 18/03/2026 05:33

Literally what the book says its a quote not an insult

Who knew Nadia was such an Islamophobe? 😂

It's at times like these I miss the laughing reaction the most.

Oh give over. You know full well the correct spelling, 30 pages in. It’s a decision at this point.

The name is right though, it's just the spelling that's wrong. I have a name like Nadiya's and people who have known me for years do the equivalent of spelling it Nadia. It's not that they don't respect me. They just get muddled. It's not the end of the world.

I can't imagine confronting them about their "fundamental lack of basic respect" over it. If nothing else, that'd be an exhausting way to go through life! I correct if it actually matters and ignore if it doesn't. Those of us in this position have had a lifetime to get used to and get over it. Half the time it's autocorrect anyway - it's not even an intentional misspelling. This just happened to me on this thread actually, and I didn't notice. C'est la vie 🤷‍♀️

I totally understand getting muddled, I don’t mind people incorrectly spelling my name by accident. But come on… That’s not what’s happening here at this stage. Seriously…

Anyway, whatever. I don’t need to point out something that’s so evident at this point. You guys have fun!

CraftyNavySeal · 22/03/2026 20:00

I enjoyed her show but I think cookery shows are on their way out, loads of people doing 30 second recipes on tiktok and instagram mean no one has the patience to spend half an hour hearing someone's life story and how it relates to a casserole.

People like Nishacooks and Whatinthechef are really popular on SM and are on TV now doing similar things.

SnoopyPajamas · 22/03/2026 20:06

OhNoThankYou · 22/03/2026 19:54

There we have what?

The joke is that people keep jumping up to imply others on the thread are Islamophobic for using the phrase "Islamic cuisine" - but it's actually the phrase Nadiya herself used to describe the book. Is she supposed to have been phobic against her own culture? People keep doing this, but it's a virtue signal that backfires on itself. The helpful picture of the book, with the words front and centre for everyone to see, is hilarious. It's right there on the cover, come on 😂

I'm sorry, but what about this do you not find funny?

mids2019 · 22/03/2026 20:24

It's so exclusive though a faith based cook book? We don't have Christian cook books as it would be non sensicle.

Also food is based on place and culture. For instance Lebanese cooking will be practised by both Christians and Muslims as both exist in that country. Similarly in Israel you have both Jews and Muslims so in reality food will be fairly similar.

A faith based cook book is an own goal.

It's really not "evident" though. This thread is full of people who like her and still call her "Nadia". And people who don't like her and have got it right every time.

I'm not sure you understand the reality of having a name like this. It's not some occasional "accident" when people use the alternate spelling. It's all day every day. It's people you've known for years. It's people who can't seem to make up their mind and change the spelling every time. It's people who remember there's a "thing" about the way you spell your name, and genuinely try to remember what it is, and still end up using the version they were trying not to. It's people using text-to-speech, or their phone defaulting to "Nadia" because they know a Nadia and use her name more often. It's your entire life, and you very quickly learn it's not personal.

It's nice that you're a fan and want people to get it right, but by this stage of her life, it's a pretty safe bet that Nadiya herself has learned to laugh at all the confusion. You really don't need to get so intense about it.

Yet we have a Jewish Cookery book in our kitchen. I don't think that is unusual.

If you actually look at the book, it's food Muslims from many different countries cook for iftars and to celebrate Eid. A journey across the world, not "all Muslims" or "only Muslims" eat this.

She's exploring a rich diversity of food heritage across Islamic world. Muslims in Morocco and in Singapore will have different traditions for Eid.

Cailleach1 · 23/03/2026 12:04

I think it is only a ‘Muslim’ cook book insofar that it contains recipes from countries in which populations now predominantly adhere to Islam. In a roughly broad line from Algeria to Indonesia. Picking up Maldives etc. I imagine these meals are made at any time, not just Ramadan.

What I have learned is that the Ramadan is nothing like a month’s fast, or depriving yourself of something for a month. It is akin to the fasting diet 16/8 window (albeit eating window at night) , with the difference is that you can stuff your face during that window every single night of Ramadan. So, it has been interesting in that respect. I had thought it was like the really austere Lenten fast that some Orthodox adherents follow. They really do deprive themselves, with little sustenance, for nigh on 55 days.

The recipes are really feast like. The desserts quite rich. Not everyone will like everything, and you’d probably omit/substitute some of the higher calorie ingredients. However, I do that with some of Delia Smith’s recipes too. One or two of the dishes seem to be a big effort, but still interesting. Plenty of pictures, so you know what it is going to/ supposed to look like.
