I think this woman needs her to realise her star has fallen like a lot of minor celebs. She has had a good run and everything has did was tired. New cookery blood should be allowed a chance.

I thinks it's undignified to start accusing her erstwhile employers of racism.

Nadiya Hussain launches another blistering attack on the BBC

Nadiya Hussain has launched another blistering attack on the BBC after previously claiming she'd been axed due to racism in the 'broken' TV industry.

I'd rather watch Nancy, she has bags more to offer in terms of all round knowledge and she's very funny.

Re her hijab, has she 'suddenly' begun wearing it? I thought she always did.

I personally think religious covering rules that only apply to women are sexist and unfair. But otoh I don't think saying women wearing hijabs are endorsing oppression & force is that helpful.

She wore a turban wrap for a while. It's not the same as a hijab.

@KimHwn i imagine since it’s halal and based on the religion and religious practices. Just as a Christian cook book would be tailored. As opposed to referring to a regional cuisine

That’s a good point. Personally, I wouldn’t be particularly interested in any religious cook books, as opposed to books from a particular region.

I think if you look worldwide and even in the UK having a lack of a lucrative contract expansion isn't exactly the worst thing that can befall a Muslim woman. In fact having a homely Muslim woman fulfilling a destiny of cooking for hubby and family may be problematic in itself in terms of women's potential.

You mean Nadiya's cooking career is sexist? I'm not sure about that. Is it sexist for women to cook, in general?

Arguably we need more female chefs given the weird macho culture that's paradoxically kept women out of chef culture.

Pasta4Dinner · 10/03/2026 09:25

I haven’t watched a cookery show in years. Given the chance DH would watch one, he can’t cook though.

I was in a charity shop yesterday and saw a Lorraine Pascale book and was thinking I hadn’t seen her for years. TV chefs come and go. Honestly I get most new recipes from Instagram now, I see something I like and save it. Lots of people make a career on there. Becky Excell for instance, a niche area, gluten free, probably won’t get a show but makes a living from it.

From what I’ve seen of her recipes they wouldn’t appeal at all.

Interesting take. Why is it you think that Islamic food doesn't appeal to a wider audience, when French, Italian, Spanish, North American foods do very well here? Any ideas?
Nadia is ace.

What is “Islamic food”? Halal meet -most people in Britain are repulsed by causing animals suffering unnecessarily and some are forbidden from eating it. There is a call for better labeling as many consumers feel misled and actively want to avoid it. what other “Islamic foods” are you talking about. Food that relates to certain countries who currently happen to have a majority Muslim population? Maybe we should classify fish and chips and a roast dinner as Christian Food?

Or are we talking about Eid and Ramadan? For 90% of the British public they’re totally irrelevant. Why would they be interested in accessing a religious practice of a religion that is entirely irrelevant to them? Bizarre

its little wonder the BBC (as much as it usually is very pro Muslim) had little interest in it. Just as I wouldn’t expect to see a Traditional Christmas Cooking book serialised on Iraq TV

Oh is that what you meant?!
Wondered what on earth you meant by that!
Although how did hijab autocorrect to that?!
Jeez.
Mine keeps trying to change it to Johan 😕

Also the irony of people saying 'No one's telling Jamie Oliver to go away'. When his name comes up on mumsnet it's wall to wall Jamie hate.

I'm a keen cook and also of south asian descent and her recipes don't appeal to me. Like pp said, lots of weird combinations that don't sound like they would work. My go to asian inspired recipes are by Meera Sodha and Rukmini Iyer mostly. I think her appeal is limited, and she's had a good run so far.

Rukmini Iyer has absolutely mastered the market for busy weeknight cooking which Nadiya seemed to be going for with her 'use what you have in the house recipes'.

Rukmini has done it by being really really good at what she does though and no TV show.

CautiousLurker2 · 10/03/2026 09:02

Google Gino d’acampo, John Torode and Gregg Wallace just for starters.

John Torode was completely done over, no scandal there

Gregg Wallace is not a TV chef!!!

Gino - yes.

Who else seeing as the were the 'starters'.

I think it's important for everyone posting here to remember that Nadiya has had serious mental health issues in the past. Please be kind.

I wasn’t aware of that.

I’ve always had an interest in her career and even bought the novel and wrote but truth be told I had only watched a couple of episodes of her last two series because they weren’t very good. I thought she’d had her day. Then when the genocide in Gaza started and she became very vocal about it and started publicly identifying as a Muslim in a way that may have put people off I did say to my family - we won’t see much of Nadya on tv anymore. I think she was palatable as a Muslim woman as long as she wasn’t too much of one but once she stepped over the invisible boundaries that had been in place and was toast.

Seapoint2002 · 10/03/2026 09:28

The BBC will know exactly what her viewing figures are. If they are not high enough you get canned. That's literally it!

I would argue Christmas is more cultural than religious these days though.

scoobysnaxx · 10/03/2026 09:29

What are you on about? She got a “proper job” in a local school as a teaching assistant and sadly had to leave due to her condition.

SugarPuffSandwiches · 10/03/2026 09:18

Your post's horrible. Why was she "ticking a box?"
Like if you're Muslim, female and not the usual white male chef of which there's hundreds of, it must be a "box ticking exercise?!" 🙄 Never mind how good you actually are, to some like yourself it's always a "box tick." Biscuit
You're kind of making her bloody point there!
I like Nadiya. I've watched some of her cookery shows and she comes across well, and approachable. Relatable.

Ok you love her, I get your point but she was on the BBC and they did tick a box and she didn't mind did she until she wasn't. I don't care if you think Im horrible your opinion means totally nothing to me.
In fact Im laughing at how excited you sound. .

I think I might write a book of Christian Cooking…..it’ll be pretty much the same as Muslim Cooking but won’t scare the flag shaggers.

So you want to write a Christian cook book for EID and Ramadam

I personally think religious covering rules that only apply to women are sexist and unfair. But otoh I don't think saying women wearing hijabs are endorsing oppression & force is that helpful.

I read a quote from her saying she'd compromised on TV by covering only her hair and not (as would've been her preference) also her neck.

I'm incredulous at the level of contradiction involved in citing sexism whilst complaining about not being able to indulge something that is inherently sexist. Correct me if I'm wrong, however isn't the act of covering an adherence to 'modesty and obedience'?

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 10/03/2026 09:30

I watched a couple of her shows and the stuff she made seemed weird (wish I could remember a couple). Mixing ingredients I'd never in a million years put together. I didn't enjoy them as programmes.

With the exception of Nigella (who I'm also not a fan of), I think almost all other chefs on TV are exactly that - chefs. Trained and experienced over many years cooking in, running, and often owning restaurants. For someone who won a TV baking competition Nadiya has had a very good run, far more than the usual ten minutes of fame.

The BBC stop making programmes for four reasons: 1) they cost too much to make. 2) the ratings aren't good enough. 3) the presenters have done something they shouldn't. 4) the format is tired and it's time to go in a different direction.

I think to automatically cry racism when they've employed you to make umpteen series over many years is pretty disingenuous.
